The current official direction is investment: Hawaiian says its Honolulu-based A330s are scheduled for a cabin overhaul starting in 2028, and Alaska Air Group has separately announced new premium-cabin products for the type. That does not establish the future of every individual aircraft; the announcements do not give tail-by-tail retirement or lease-return schedules.
What Alaska and Hawaiian have announced for the A330s
Hawaiian’s A330 investment page says its Honolulu-based fleet is scheduled for a full interior upgrade starting in 2028. The planned work includes new seats, carpets, lighting, first-class suites and a Premium Economy cabin, as well as Bluetooth-enabled entertainment, high-definition seatback screens and Starlink Wi-Fi.
Alaska Air Group reinforced that direction in a September 29, 2026 announcement. It described Leihōkū, a Hawaiian premium experience, and said Premium Reserve is planned to debut on Hawaiian’s A330 fleet in 2028. These are announced investments, not a guarantee that every A330 will remain in service indefinitely.
Why the 717 retirement news can be confusing
The announced 2028 transition applies to a different aircraft and mission. In July 2026, Alaska said Hawaiian-branded 737-800s would replace Hawaiian’s retiring Boeing 717 fleet on Neighbor Island routes, with the transition expected to begin in 2028. That is not an A330 retirement announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- ICONIC BELUGA XL DESIGN** — Inspired by the Airbus Beluga XL, this 1:300 scale model captures the aircraft’s distinctive whale-like shape and oversized upper fuselage. Its playful appearance makes it a fun addition to an airplane collection, shelf, desk, or display cabinet.
- SOLID DIECAST METAL CONSTRUCTION — Made from diecast metal, this Airbus A330-based model has a sturdy feel and durable construction. Measuring approximately 7.76"L × 7.42"W × 2.68"H, its larger 1:300 scale gives the unique Beluga XL shape plenty of presence while remaining easy to display.
- FULLY PAINTED BELUGA XL LIVERY — The aircraft features spray-painted livery rather than sticker decals, giving the model a clean and colorful appearance. The distinctive Beluga XL design, aircraft markings, and painted details bring out the playful character of this unusual Airbus transporter.
- ONE-PIECE MODEL WITH DISPLAY OPTIONS — The main aircraft body is a one-piece diecast design, so the cargo hatch is non-openable. Simple landing wheels and an included display stand let you choose how to display the model, whether on a desk, bookshelf, cabinet, or as part of an airplane collection.
- FUN AVIATION GIFT & DESK DECORATION — A unique gift for aviation fans, aerospace enthusiasts, teenagers, adults, or anyone who enjoys unusual aircraft. The Beluga XL’s distinctive appearance makes it more than a typical airplane model and adds a fun conversation piece to a home, office, or collection.
| Aircraft | Mission or scope | Announced action | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airbus A330 | Hawaiian’s Honolulu-based passenger fleet | Interior upgrade; Alaska Air Group also announced Leihōkū and Premium Reserve plans | Starting in 2028 |
| Boeing 717 | Hawaiian Neighbor Island service | Retirement transition, with Hawaiian-branded 737-800s selected as replacements | Expected to begin in 2028 |
The 717-to-737-800 announcement is documented in Alaska’s July 21, 2026 release. Its reference to 2028 does not indicate that the A330s are being phased out.
What the available fleet information does—and does not—show
Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 12, 2026, lists A330 aircraft among those used for Alaska and Hawaiian passenger service. It also reports 47 million revenue passengers carried by the two airlines combined in 2025. That is historical evidence of passenger operations, not a current A330 count or an aircraft-by-aircraft status list.

Alaska’s pilot careers fleet page lists 24 Airbus A330s, but the page does not date that count. Treat it as an undated listing rather than a confirmed fleet census for a specific date. The official material cited here does not establish an A330 retirement rate, a dated fleet total, or which individual aircraft may be parked, returned to a lessor or removed from service for other reasons.

How to read the announcements
- Fleet-level direction: Hawaiian and Alaska Air Group have announced A330 cabin investments beginning in 2028, which argues against describing a fleet-wide retirement as already underway.
- Aircraft-level status: A cabin program does not prove that every individual airframe will stay. No tail-by-tail disposition or lease-return schedule is provided in these announcements.
- Different fleet decisions: The 717 retirement transition concerns Neighbor Island flying; the A330 investment concerns Hawaiian’s Honolulu-based widebody fleet.
