Is Chery coming to the U.S.?
Chery has expressed interest in the American market, but the statement reported by Reuters on May 20, 2026, did not include a timetable, confirmed models, a distribution plan, or a production location. The report said the United States had not yet been added to Chery’s export destinations. That makes it inaccurate to describe a U.S. launch as imminent or officially scheduled. Reuters, May 20, 2026
The report attributed the comment to Zhang, an executive overseeing Chery’s international business, but the available account does not provide the executive’s full name or a complete direct quotation. It is safest to characterize the statement as reported interest rather than present it as a formal company launch announcement.
Can you buy a Chery car in the United States?
The available reporting does not establish that Chery cars are currently sold through an official U.S. sales channel. It specifically said the country was not yet one of Chery’s export destinations. Chery’s activity in many other markets does not demonstrate U.S. availability.

Chery said in July 2026 that its products were sold in more than 130 countries and regions, but that company article did not list those destinations. The more U.S.-specific May report is the relevant evidence on American availability. Chery International, July 2026
Is Chery state-owned?
The evidence does not support simply calling Chery wholly state-owned. Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 25, 2025. Its IPO announcement said state-owned enterprises were among its cornerstone investors. Separately, a Chery International privacy statement effective May 18, 2026, describes the company as a “private company with limited liability.” Neither statement, on its own, settles the company’s ultimate ownership, control rights, or the extent of state influence.

Why would a U.S. launch be difficult?
One substantial regulatory issue is the Commerce Department’s connected-vehicle rule. It restricts certain imports and U.S. sales of completed connected vehicles that contain covered software designed, developed, manufactured, or supplied by people or entities owned by, controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of China or Russia. It also restricts manufacturers with those ties from knowingly selling completed connected vehicles with covered vehicle-connectivity-system hardware or covered software.

The rule is relevant to a potential Chery entry, but the available material does not establish a Chery-specific government determination, and it is not proof that this is the only barrier. Reuters also described the U.S. as a difficult market for Chinese automakers and noted 100% tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles. Tariff rates are time-sensitive, and the available evidence here does not establish the current applicable rate for a future Chery vehicle. Chery’s international scale does not mean a U.S. launch is near
Chery reported 943,817 vehicle exports in the first half of 2026, up 71.5% year over year, and said it had 6.78 million overseas users at the end of June 2026. - Connected-vehicle technology: whether a model uses covered connectivity hardware or software under the rules in force.
- Ownership and control: how relevant company relationships are treated under the applicable regulations.
- Tariffs: the rates applicable to the vehicle and its country of origin at the time.
- Sales plan: whether Chery announces a distributor, direct sales channel, local production, or another route.
These are questions a future announcement and regulatory review would need to answer, not routes Chery has announced.
