Cary may suit retirees who want relatively mild winters and can afford its housing costs, but it is not an unqualified bargain: summers are warm to hot, and local home values and rents are substantial. Travel + Leisure reported that Cary topped GoBankingRates’ ranking for retirement weather and affordability; that ranking is one assessment, not a universal verdict.
What Cary’s weather is like for retirees
NOAA’s 1991–2020 Climate Normals for its Cary station show a four-season climate. The annual mean temperature is 59.6°F, with a mean daily maximum of 70.0°F and a mean daily minimum of 49.3°F. January’s mean is 40.7°F, while July’s is 78.6°F. These are long-term averages, not a forecast or a promise about any particular season. NOAA describes Climate Normals as 30-year averages; 1991–2020 is the current standard U.S. period (NOAA, Understanding Climate Normals; NOAA Cary station monthly normals).

The numbers point to winters that are cool rather than tropical and summers that may feel hot to people who prefer mild weather. If you are considering a move, weigh summer heat and humidity alongside winter comfort; the annual average alone can conceal the seasonal conditions that matter most to you.
For rainfall context, NOAA’s 1991–2020 normal at Raleigh-Durham International Airport is 46.07 inches per year. That figure describes the regional airport station, not a townwide Cary measurement (NOAA Raleigh-Durham International Airport station normals).

|---|---|---|
| Median value of owner-occupied housing | $580,200 | Estimated value of owner-occupied homes |

All figures are U.S. Census Bureau estimates for Cary in 2020–2024; they are local medians, not a personal budget or a quote for a particular home. Actual expenses depend on the property, household, and financing. Use the numbers as a starting point for comparing your expected housing costs with your retirement income (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts: Cary town, North Carolina).

Why Cary is called a top retirement city—and the caveat
Travel + Leisure reported that Cary led GoBankingRates’ ranking for retirement weather and affordability. That label reflects a ranking’s chosen inputs and weights, not proof that Cary is the best place for every retiree. The same Travel + Leisure report noted that AreaVibes gave Cary a weak cost-of-living grade, illustrating how assessments can differ (Travel + Leisure’s report on the ranking).
Affordability is especially personal in retirement: housing costs can take a different share of a fixed income than they do for a working household. Cary’s housing plans also recognize affordability pressures and the needs of older residents, including people on fixed incomes (Town of Cary Housing Plan, final October 2022).

How to decide whether Cary fits your retirement
Compare Cary with the places you are genuinely considering using your own budget and priorities. These are the main questions to answer:
- Seasonal comfort: Would Cary’s cool winters and warm-to-hot summers suit you throughout the year?
- Housing budget: Could you comfortably cover the likely purchase price, rent, or ongoing owner costs—not just the monthly figure that looks most appealing?
- Taxes and health care: Compare taxes using your household’s actual income sources and check access to the primary, specialty, and emergency care you need. The figures above do not establish a tax advantage or a city-to-city health-care cost advantage.
- Daily mobility: Cary promotes parks and greenways, but practical access and convenience vary by neighborhood and by a person’s mobility. Check the places and services you would use from a specific address.
- Support network: Consider distance from family, friends, and other people who may be part of your day-to-day support.
The Town of Cary highlights its parks, greenways, and proximity to major universities, but those community features do not by themselves show whether a particular home will be convenient for your routine (Town of Cary, 2026 State of Cary; Town of Cary, About Cary).
