CME Group reported August returns of 17.91% for Chicago wheat, 15.82% for corn and 8.40% for soybeans. Those are monthly returns for continuous futures series, not October 8 prices or cash prices paid for grain.
What does “multi-month highs” mean in the available figures?
CME Group’s September 2026 Agriculture Index report gives the clearest measure of the late-summer move: August returns for three continuous futures components. The index itself returned 6.37% that month. The figures show a sharp rally, particularly in wheat, but they do not specify a same-day quote, a named delivery contract or a cash-market price. They therefore should not be read as the price of grain on October 8.
| Market | August 2026 return | Reported market drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago wheat | 17.91% (CME continuous futures component) | Black Sea export disruption, war-related logistics, drought and global supply concerns |
| Corn | 15.82% (CME continuous futures component) | Energy costs, ethanol production, USDA estimates and international purchases |
| Soybeans | 8.40% (CME continuous futures component) | Energy costs, crush activity, USDA estimates and international purchases |
The returns and driver descriptions are reported by CME Group in its September 2026 index update and September 21 OpenMarkets analysis. A continuous futures series tracks a sequence of futures contracts; it is not the same thing as a single contract with a particular delivery month.
Why did the three grains rise?
Wheat: Black Sea logistics and global supply concerns
CME’s September reporting linked wheat’s strength more directly to supply concerns than to the energy and processing themes it cited for corn and soybeans. Disruption to Black Sea exports, war-related logistics and drought all featured in the market narrative.
#1 Best Overall
The USDA Economic Research Service’s September 18, 2026 wheat outlook adds an important qualification: it forecast global wheat trade in the 2026/27 marketing year to be 6% below the previous year’s record. ERS cited complications in Black Sea transit, but also noted that larger crops among some exporters and more production by importing countries could reduce trade needs. This is a forecast, not a final trade result. ERS also forecast the United States to be the fifth-largest wheat exporter in 2026/27, with U.S. exports at a three-year low.
Corn: energy, ethanol and crop estimates
CME linked corn’s August strength to high energy costs, strong ethanol production, international purchases and supply expectations. Its September 11 account of the USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report said the U.S. corn yield estimate was 178.5 bushels per acre and met market expectations when released. That is a USDA estimate as reported by CME, not a realized harvest yield.

Soybeans: crush activity, buying and unresolved trade questions
CME cited crush activity—the processing of soybeans into products such as oil and meal—alongside energy costs and international purchases as support for soybeans. Its September reporting also described broader trade friction alongside resilient buying. That combination helps explain why trade developments remained relevant without establishing that they had become a clear bullish or bearish resolution.
Had trade-war fears actually ebbed?
Not conclusively on the evidence available by October 8. CME’s September coverage described trade friction and purchases continuing, rather than a definitive resolution. A CME commentary dated September 23 said soybean futures were moving sideways as traders awaited outcomes from U.S.-China meetings. That supports treating trade policy as an active uncertainty; it does not confirm a trade agreement or a broad easing of trade-war concerns.

The distinction matters: the August grain gains are documented, while the claim that fading trade fears drove them is not established by these reports. CME’s stated explanations emphasize different combinations of supply, weather, energy costs, processing demand and international buying, depending on the grain.

A futures return is not a direct forecast of grocery bills. Futures are contracts tied to delivery months, while retail food prices also reflect processing, transport, labor, packaging, inventories and other inputs. The August returns alone cannot show how much a consumer will pay for bread, cereal, cooking oil or animal products, or when any change might reach store shelves.

For a personal-finance reader, the useful takeaway is narrower: grain markets experienced a sharp late-summer futures rally, but the cited figures are historical monthly returns rather than current consumer prices. Anyone comparing market reports should check whether a number refers to futures or cash grain, which contract or series is being measured, and the date of the observation.
