Airbus says it is seriously considering the stretch, but has not decided whether or when to proceed.
What Breeze’s CEO said about the A220-500
In an interview published by Breeze Airways, founder and CEO David Neeleman said Breeze would be interested in buying a longer version of the A220. He described the proposed aircraft as the “A220-500” and said it could be a better option for Breeze than an Airbus A320.
Neeleman pointed to common parts and pilots as reasons the longer A220 could suit the airline. Those are his stated reasons for interest, not independently established specifications or a verified operating-cost comparison.
The interview also asked whether Breeze would purchase an A320 fleet. Neeleman’s response described a possible future choice, not a signed aircraft purchase. He estimated the longer derivative might appear around 2030, but that was his estimate—not a confirmed Airbus schedule or entry-into-service date. Breeze Airways’ interview

What Airbus has decided—and what it has not
At its annual press conference on 19 February 2026, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said the company was hearing strong market interest and was seriously considering the A220-500. He also said Airbus had not reached a decision on timing. Faury cited the work of integrating Spirit AeroSystems work packages into the A220 programme as one demand on Airbus. That distinction matters: an airline executive’s interest does not constitute an order, and a manufacturer’s consideration does not establish that an aircraft will be launched. The available 2026 statements establish neither a launch decision nor a production or delivery schedule for the proposed stretch.

Breeze’s confirmed A220 orders
Airbus announced in February 2024 that Breeze had disclosed an additional 10 A220-300s, bringing its firm order for that model to 90. Airbus’s June 2026 customer list, which reports figures at the end of May 2026, still lists 90 Breeze A220-300 orders and no A220-500 order. Airbus’s June 2026 factsheet describes the current A220 family—comprising the A220-100 and A220-300—as serving the 100-to-160-seat market segment, with range up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). Those are family-level figures, not specifications for the proposed A220-500. Airbus’s reviewed factsheet does not provide the stretch’s seating capacity, range, or performance figures.
