International Airlines Group (IAG), British Airways’ parent company, announced a 71-aircraft long-haul order package in 2025. Six of those aircraft are Boeing 777-9s for British Airways, obtained by exercising options; the headline term “777X” refers to this specific variant. The package also includes 32 separate Boeing 787-10s for BA, six Airbus A350-1000s for BA, and aircraft allocated to Iberia or available to other IAG airlines.
What does IAG’s 71-aircraft order include?
The package combines an 18-aircraft group announced in March 2025 with 53 additional widebodies announced in May. IAG described the order as serving medium-term long-haul fleet needs. The allocations and purposes given in its 2025 interim report are:

IAG said 35 of the 53 May aircraft would replace existing aircraft or, for LEVEL, short-term leases. The other 18 were intended for growth in its main markets. The report did not break those figures down by individual aircraft type or airline. IAG Half-Year Results 2025
Are the six Boeing 777X aircraft for British Airways?
Yes. IAG identifies all six as Boeing 777-9s for British Airways. “777X” is the name of Boeing’s aircraft family; the six in this announcement are the 777-9 variant, not an unspecified mix of 777X models.

IAG said it exercised options for the six aircraft during 2025. That is separate from the earlier commitment announced by Boeing in February 2019: 18 firm 777X orders and 24 options for IAG. How the 777-9s differ from BA’s 787-10 order
The six 777-9s are only one part of BA’s new aircraft. The 32 Boeing 787-10s are a separate portion of IAG’s 71-aircraft package, not another name for the 777-9s. In February 2026, BA chief executive Sean Doyle said the first of those 787-10s was expected to reach Gatwick in 2029 and begin replacing BA’s existing 777-200 fleet. When are the aircraft expected to arrive?
IAG’s interim report forecast delivery of the full 71-aircraft package from 2027 through 2033. Its FY2025 results later gave a 2028–2033 range for aircraft subject to the orders described there. The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s June 2026 Heathrow report said worldwide 777X commercial service was expected in 2027 after certification delays. It also said IAG reported 24 BA 777-9 deliveries from 2027 to 2030. Those figures describe a broader delivery forecast than the six-aircraft option exercise alone; the dates remain estimates. Why did IAG order the aircraft?
IAG said the fleet package supports both replacement and growth. The group also said newer aircraft are intended to improve operating and fuel efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and provide updated cabin products. These are IAG’s stated reasons and expected benefits, not measured results for BA’s undelivered aircraft.
