Bitcoin’s cryptography could be vulnerable to a sufficiently capable quantum computer, but the proposals discussed by Bitcoin developer Matt Corallo are not active Bitcoin rules or a guarantee of protection. In a February 22, 2026 interview with Unchained, Corallo argues that developers are working on possible responses. The conversation focuses on quantum risk; it does not lay out a specific AI attack on Bitcoin.
What quantum computing could put at risk
Bitcoin uses public-key cryptography to authorize spending. Corallo acknowledges that a sufficiently capable quantum computer could derive a private key from an exposed public key, potentially putting the associated funds at risk. The interview does not provide a probability or a date for when such a computer might exist, so no arrival timeline should be treated as settled.

That possibility is not the same as saying Bitcoin is currently broken. It describes a vulnerability that could matter if quantum computing reaches the required capability and if a public key is exposed in a way an attacker can exploit. The interview discusses possible preparations, not a present-day emergency procedure for every holder.
What Corallo says developers are doing
Corallo disputes the idea that Bitcoin developers are simply ignoring quantum risk. He says contributors are exploring what a post-quantum Bitcoin might look like and what short- and long-term plans could involve. That is his account in an interview, not an official position issued on behalf of Bitcoin Core or a count of independently verified projects.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
He also discusses a possible role for seed-based wallets in a future proof-of-ownership approach. A seed phrase and a quantum-resistant signature are not interchangeable: possessing a seed does not by itself make an on-chain Bitcoin signature resistant to quantum attacks. The interview describes a possible protocol approach, not a feature already implemented in wallets.
What BIP 360 and BIP 361 propose
The proposals mentioned in the discussion are drafts, not adopted network rules. Their status and scope matter: a proposal’s existence does not mean Bitcoin has activated it or that users can rely on its protections today.

| Proposal | Repository status | What it proposes | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIP 360, Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) | Draft consensus soft-fork specification | Removes Taproot’s key-path spend and describes protection aimed at long-exposure quantum attacks. | Its text says short-exposure attacks may require post-quantum signatures. It is not a complete or activated quantum-proofing solution. |
| BIP 361, Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset | Draft informational proposal | Describes a proposed migration and sunset of legacy signatures. | Neither the migration mechanism nor a signature sunset is a current Bitcoin rule. |
Why exposure time and signature size matter
Long exposure versus short exposure
BIP 360 distinguishes a long-exposure attack, where a public key is visible for an extended period, from a short-exposure attack, such as one during an unconfirmed transaction. Its stated protection targets the former; the proposal says short-exposure attacks may call for post-quantum signatures instead. The distinction is why BIP 360 should not be described as solving every quantum attack.
Post-quantum signatures have trade-offs
Corallo describes hash-based post-quantum signatures as a candidate direction and says they require materially more data than existing signatures. He also discusses the idea of wallets committing to post-quantum keys before they need to spend with them, leaving a later decision about whether and when to make that change. Those are proposal-level considerations; the interview establishes no deployed upgrade, migration schedule, or agreed decision.

Does AI pose a separate Bitcoin threat?
The interview briefly invokes AI in the broader context of fast-moving technology and public concern. It does not develop a scenario in which AI itself breaks Bitcoin’s cryptography, compromises consensus, or threatens network security. The substantive risk discussion is about quantum computing, so the AI reference should not be read as evidence of a distinct Bitcoin attack.

What Bitcoin holders should take from the discussion
- Quantum risk is a recognized subject of developer research and proposal work, but the interview offers no verified forecast for when a cryptographically capable quantum computer will exist.
- Corallo describes possible preparations, while both BIP 360 and BIP 361 remain drafts in the Bitcoin BIPs repository.
- A seed phrase alone is not a quantum-resistant on-chain signature, and the interview does not identify a currently available wallet feature that resolves the protocol risk.
- Individual developer views, draft proposals, and adopted Bitcoin rules are different things. Corallo says no single person can speak for all Bitcoin developers.
