Barnes & Noble is the largest retail bookseller in the United States as a chain, according to the company. In an announcement dated June 25, 2026, it reported 712 U.S. bookstores. That does not establish that any one Barnes & Noble location is the country’s biggest bookstore: the company’s historical “World’s Largest Bookstore” description refers to an earlier Fifth Avenue store, while its current flagship is Union Square in New York City.
What “biggest bookstore” means
The phrase can describe either a bookselling business with many locations or one exceptionally large physical store. Barnes & Noble’s current claim concerns the first meaning: the company calls itself the largest retail bookseller in the U.S. and reported 712 U.S. bookstores on June 25, 2026. That is a company statement and store count, not an independently audited comparison of bookstore floor areas.

For an individual store, “biggest” would need a defined measure, such as floor area or inventory. The available company pages do not provide a current nationwide comparison using such a measure, so they do not establish which U.S. bookstore is largest today.
Why Barnes & Noble is associated with the superlative
Barnes & Noble’s company history says Leonard Riggio acquired the Barnes & Noble trade name and Manhattan flagship in 1971. A few years later, the Fifth Avenue store became known as “The World’s Largest Bookstore,” with 150,000 textbook and trade titles, according to that historical account. The figure describes the store in that earlier period; it is not a current inventory count or proof of a present-day size ranking.

Barnes & Noble identifies its Union Square store as its flagship. The address listed by the company is 33 East 17th Street, New York, NY 10003. Its store page describes print books, a café, toys and games, vinyl, discovery, and events. The page does not call Union Square the largest bookstore in the U.S.; check the official Union Square store listing for current store and event details before visiting.
