The IRS sources cited here do not establish what error codes 2001 or 8016 mean. Don’t infer a cause or a fix from either number alone: identify the tax software or filing service that displayed it, then use the complete rejection message to determine your next step. If you used IRS Free File Fillable Forms, search the full rejection information in the IRS Error Search Toolbox.
What do IRS error codes 2001 and 8016 mean?
The available official IRS guidance does not define either code. Their meaning may depend on the filing software and the tax year, so the number alone is not enough to identify the problem. The IRS’s Free File Fillable Forms lookup explains how to search a rejection, but it does not verify a general meaning for these two codes: Free File Fillable Forms Error search tool.
A rejection is a filing-status message, not proof that the return was accepted, that a penalty is due, or that an account-security problem exists. The IRS states, “A rejected return is not filed.” Use the rejection notice and the instructions from the service that transmitted the return to establish what happened.
How to find the actual rejection issue
If you used IRS Free File Fillable Forms
- Open the latest rejection email, or view the rejection information in Step 5 of the form-filing process.
- Copy the complete rejection information, including the 20-digit Submission ID and every listed rejection issue.
- Enter that information in the IRS Error Search Toolbox and follow every solution it returns.
- Review the corrected return, then resubmit it.
Searching only code 2001 or 8016, or correcting only one listed issue, may leave other rejection problems unresolved. The IRS asks users of this service to search the complete message and address all returned errors. When asking for technical support, do not send sensitive information such as an SSN, ITIN, address, password, bank or card details, or a complete return.

If you used other tax software or a preparer
Read the rejection explanation supplied by the software or preparer and follow that service’s correction and retransmission instructions. The IRS describes common correctable issues such as a mistyped Social Security number or payer identification number, an omitted form, or a misspelled name. The actual rejection explanation—not the code number in isolation—determines whether a correction is possible.
When to correct and retransmit, or file on paper
Some e-file rejections can be fixed and retransmitted; others may require a paper return. The IRS’s general rejection guidance explains this distinction and provides examples: Age, name or SSN rejects, errors, correction procedures. The IRS also recommends checking a return for accuracy and completeness; its e-file system can detect errors and reject a return for correction. See Topic no. 303, Checklist of common errors when preparing your tax return.

If the notice or your filing service indicates the issue cannot be corrected electronically, check whether the IRS paper-filing procedure applies to your tax year and situation. The IRS FAQ says a paper return following an e-file rejection must be postmarked by the later of the return due date, including extensions, or 10 calendar days after the IRS rejection notification. It also lists these steps:
- Explain why the return is being filed after the due date, if applicable.
- Include the rejection notification.
- Describe corrective actions, if applicable.
- Write the rejected-return notation specified in the IRS instructions in red at the top of page one.
- Sign and mail the return.
Because the applicable deadline and requirements can depend on the tax year and circumstances, confirm them in the IRS instructions before mailing. Do not assume that either error code by itself means paper filing is required.
