Irish worker Cal McIlwaine says he earned A$141,000 from nine months of fly-in fly-out (FIFO) work in Western Australia. The figure is his personal account, reported by PerthNow on 25 November 2025 and covered in a follow-up by the Irish Independent. Neither report establishes it as an audited amount or a typical FIFO salary.

What McIlwaine says he earned—and what the figure means

PerthNow attributes the A$141,000 nine-month total to McIlwaine. He described it as “crazy money” compared with what he had earned at home. The reports do not include payroll records, a breakdown of the amount, or an independent audit, so it should be read as reported personal earnings rather than verified take-home pay.

His later role was as a serviceman at a Pilbara mine site. He said he drove a service truck to machinery, supplied fuel, grease and oils, and checked for defects. PerthNow reported that he was paid A$60 an hour before tax for 12-hour days. Those are details of his role at the time of the report, not a current or representative rate for Australian mine work.

How he got his first FIFO role

McIlwaine arrived in Western Australia on a working holiday visa without mining or machinery experience, according to PerthNow. He said he spent A$1,600 on tickets and licences after arriving, including a Heavy Rigid licence, a White Card and advanced first aid with CPR. He applied for roughly 70–100 jobs, contacted a Perth FIFO recruiter and said he secured his first FIFO job 28 days after arrival.

His first reported roster was three weeks on and one week off at a Pilbara site. The timeline and preparation describe one person’s experience; they do not guarantee that another applicant will find work in the same time, need the same credentials, or spend the same amount. Requirements depend on the role and employer, and the reports do not establish a universal ticket list for mine-site work.

What to consider before pursuing FIFO work

The earnings claim needs to be weighed against the conditions attached to this kind of work. The Irish Independent’s follow-up notes that FIFO can be demanding and raises physical and mental health concerns. McIlwaine’s reported 12-hour days and remote Pilbara location offer context for the pay, but the coverage does not provide enough detail to assess his full hours, deductions, travel costs, or other expenses.

  • Full-grain waterproof leather
  • Rubber outsole to provide extra traction

  • Check the pay basis: distinguish gross hourly rates from take-home pay and ask how rostered hours, overtime and deductions are handled.
  • Confirm the job’s requirements: verify tickets, licences and experience expectations with the employer or recruiter for the specific vacancy.
  • Assess the roster and location: consider long shifts, time away from home and access to support at a remote site, not just the headline earnings.
  • Plan for costs and uncertainty: training, travel and time spent applying can affect the financial outcome, and a successful 28-day search is not a reliable forecast for other applicants.
