Re:

iPhone 17 Helps Apple Reclaim Top Spot From Samsung After 14 Years

Apple returned to the top of the global smartphone shipment rankings in 2025, helped by iPhone 17 demand. The lead does not mean Apple won every market or financial measure.

Apple reclaimed the global smartphone shipment lead from Samsung in full-year 2025, according to Counterpoint data later summarized by MacRumors. The result marked Apple’s return to the top after its previous leadership in 2011—but it does not mean Apple led Samsung in revenue, profits, installed base, or every country and quarter.

The original November 2025 report was still a forecast. Counterpoint then projected that Apple would finish 2025 with about 19.4% of global smartphone shipments, before later reporting placed Apple at approximately 20% for the completed year.

The headline was first a forecast, then a reported result

The timeline matters:

  • September 9, 2025: Apple introduced the iPhone 17, with a U.S. starting price of $799 for the 256GB model. Apple’s announcement lists the launch details.
  • November 26, 2025: MacRumors reported Counterpoint’s projection that Apple would overtake Samsung for the year. The estimate called for Apple’s smartphone shipments to grow 10%, compared with 4.6% for Samsung, giving Apple an estimated 19.4% global share. The original report described a likely change in leadership, not a finalized annual result.
  • January 12, 2026: Later Counterpoint data summarized by MacRumors reported Apple as the full-year 2025 global smartphone leader, with approximately 20% share and 10% year-over-year shipment growth.
  • May 22, 2026: Apple was reported to have led global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2026 with approximately 21% share. Samsung was also reported at approximately 21%, so rounding and methodology make this a near-tie rather than evidence of a commanding lead.

“After 14 years” refers to Apple’s previous global leadership in 2011 and its reported return to first place in 2025. It does not mean Samsung held every smartphone-related measure for exactly 14 uninterrupted years.

What “top smartphone maker” actually means

In this case, the ranking concerns global smartphone shipments for a full calendar year. A shipment is a device sent into a distribution channel. It is not necessarily a phone activated by a customer, sold at retail, or generating revenue in that period.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Mist Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

That distinction rules out several broader interpretations:

  • Apple did not necessarily earn more smartphone revenue than Samsung.
  • The result does not establish which company had higher mobile profits.
  • It does not measure the number of active phones already in use, known as the installed base.
  • It does not compare iOS with Android market share.
  • It does not mean Apple led in every country, price category, product type, or quarter.
  • It does not include every mobile phone category, such as basic phones, unless the research firm’s methodology specifically includes them.

The comparison is also structurally uneven. Apple’s smartphone business is concentrated around the iPhone, while Samsung sells Galaxy devices across flagship, foldable, midrange, budget, and enterprise segments. Apple can therefore win a shipment ranking through strong premium demand without matching Samsung’s breadth of models.

How much did the iPhone 17 contribute?

Counterpoint reporting cited by MacRumors said the iPhone 17 lineup outsold the iPhone 16 lineup by 14% during the first 10 days of availability in the United States and China. That is an early-period comparison in two markets—not a worldwide, full-year sales figure.

The same reporting said iPhone sales in China rose 37% year over year in October 2025. Again, this is a regional monthly figure and should not be treated as Apple’s global annual growth rate. Apple generally reports iPhone revenue rather than publishing the detailed unit-shipment tables produced by market-research firms.

The reported demand drivers included:

  • Replacement timing: People who bought phones during the pandemic-era upgrade surge were reaching the point at which a new device could feel worthwhile.
  • Broader lineup appeal: Strong demand was not limited to the highest-priced Pro models; the standard iPhone 17 also helped extend the lineup’s reach.
  • China recovery: Improved iPhone demand in China was identified as an important contributor.
  • Currency and trade conditions: A weaker dollar and easing U.S.-China trade tensions were cited as favorable market conditions.
  • Secondhand-device pipeline: Counterpoint cited 358 million secondhand iPhones sold from 2023 through the second quarter of 2025. That creates a large group of users who may eventually move into newer iPhones, although it does not guarantee future upgrades.

These factors help explain Apple’s momentum, but they do not prove that one feature or one product alone caused the ranking change. The iPhone 17 launch coincided with a favorable product cycle and stronger conditions in important markets.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Silver- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)

Why Samsung remained a serious rival

Samsung did not collapse. Its projected 2025 shipment growth of 4.6% was lower than Apple’s projected 10%, but the two companies remained close in global share.

Samsung’s advantage is portfolio breadth. Its Galaxy range includes:

  • Galaxy S flagship phones;
  • Foldable devices;
  • Galaxy A midrange and lower-cost models; and
  • Products aimed at different carriers, regions, budgets, and business buyers.

Apple’s main iPhone generation also launches later in the year, usually creating a concentrated surge during the holiday shopping period. Samsung typically introduces its leading Galaxy S phones earlier. That difference affects how much of each company’s newest product cycle is represented in a calendar-year shipment total.

In other words, Apple’s 2025 result reflected both stronger reported iPhone momentum and the timing of its launch cycle. It should not be read as proof that Samsung lost its ability to compete across the wider market.

Why annual rankings can be misleading

A full-year ranking is useful, but it can hide significant seasonal effects. Apple’s September launch gives the iPhone 17 several high-volume months at the end of the year, including the holiday quarter. Samsung’s major launch calendar is weighted differently.

Rank #3
Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Lavender- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)

Channel inventory can also affect shipment figures. A device entering a retailer or distributor’s inventory is counted differently from a phone that has already reached an end customer. Analysts may use estimates, sell-in data, or other methodologies that are not directly interchangeable.

The reported first-quarter 2026 result illustrates the narrow margin. Apple and Samsung were each placed at approximately 21% of global smartphone shipments, depending on rounding. A company can lead one quarter and trail the next without undergoing a fundamental change in consumer preference.

Does Apple now dominate the smartphone market?

No. Apple’s reported leadership is significant, but it is narrower than the phrase “world’s largest phone maker” suggests.

Android remains the broader global platform ecosystem, and Samsung competes in more price bands and form factors than Apple. Samsung may lead Apple in particular countries, budget categories, foldables, or periods of the year. Apple may be stronger in premium demand, ecosystem loyalty, and selected markets.

The ranking says that Apple had stronger global shipment momentum during the measured period. It does not establish universal consumer preference or identify a universally better phone.

What this means if you are deciding between an iPhone and a Galaxy

Market leadership should be only one input in a purchase decision. A phone is usually a multiyear expense, so compare the total cost and the fit with your existing technology.

Choose the iPhone 17 when these factors matter most

  • You already use an Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, iMessage, or FaceTime heavily.
  • You prefer iOS and a relatively controlled software experience.
  • You expect to use Apple’s trade-in, financing, or carrier offers.
  • You want a conventional flagship phone rather than a foldable.
  • You value Apple’s resale and secondhand ecosystem, while recognizing that future resale prices are not guaranteed.

Apple’s U.S. purchase page listed the iPhone 17 from $799 for 256GB and showed trade-in values that varied by the old device, condition, and eligibility. Prices and trade-in offers change, so check the current Apple purchase page before relying on a quoted amount.

U.S. iPhone 17 models activate using eSIM rather than a physical SIM tray. That may be convenient for some buyers but a disadvantage for travelers or anyone who specifically needs a physical SIM. Regional models can differ.

Choose a Galaxy device when these factors matter most

  • You prefer Android customization, multitasking, or broader system flexibility.
  • You want access to Samsung’s foldable range or S Pen-equipped models.
  • You need more choice across budget and screen-size categories.
  • You prioritize particular zoom-camera, display, or productivity features.
  • You are already invested in Samsung, Google, or other Android-compatible devices.

Samsung’s official 2025 MSRP reference listed the Galaxy S25 at $799.99 for 128GB and $859.99 for 256GB. It listed the 256GB Galaxy S25 Ultra at $1,299.99. These are U.S. reference prices, not guarantees of current retail pricing; promotions and trade-in credits can change the actual cost. See Samsung’s official Galaxy S25 purchase page and its 2025 MSRP reference.

Compare the real cost, not just the monthly payment

Carrier promotions can make either phone appear inexpensive, but the headline monthly price may depend on an eligible plan, a trade-in, a multi-month credit schedule, or keeping the line active for a specified period. Before switching, compare:

Best Value
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • the total payments over the required term;
  • the value of the phone you are trading in;
  • your required service plan;
  • activation, upgrade, and taxes;
  • insurance or extended-warranty costs; and
  • what happens if you cancel, change carriers, or lose the phone.

A discounted previous-generation iPhone or Galaxy may be better value than the newest model if you do not need the latest camera, processor, display, or software features. Galaxy A-series phones can also make more financial sense for buyers who prioritize a lower upfront cost over flagship performance.

What happens next?

Apple could extend its lead if strong replacement demand, premium-market resilience, and iPhone momentum continue. But the margin may remain sensitive to launch timing, channel inventory, exchange rates, regional demand, and the strength of Samsung’s response.

Claims about a future foldable iPhone, a lower-cost iPhone 17e, or later design changes should be treated as analyst expectations unless Apple officially announces them. They are not necessary to explain the 2025 ranking.

The bottom line for buyers and investors

Apple’s return to first place is real in the qualified sense that matters: later Counterpoint reporting said Apple led global smartphone shipments for full-year 2025, after a November forecast predicted the change. The iPhone 17 was a major reported contributor.

But the lead was narrow, the original claim was initially a projection, and shipments are not the same as sales, revenue, profits, installed base, or customer satisfaction. For a purchase decision, compare ecosystem fit, total ownership cost, trade-in terms, software preferences, camera needs, and form factors—not just which company ranked first in one annual shipment table.
