Apple executives reportedly discussed whether to make a bid for Perplexity AI, but that was not the same as making an offer—or buying the company. Bloomberg reported on June 20, 2025, that Apple’s mergers-and-acquisitions chief Adrian Perica, services chief Eddy Cue, and senior AI executives considered the possibility of a bid. The discussions were preliminary, and no formal offer was reported.
For investors, the story is best understood as evidence of Apple’s urgency around AI search, Siri, and its dependence on Google—not as evidence that an acquisition was imminent. The available evidence does not verify a completed Apple-Perplexity transaction as of August 18, 2026.

What Apple actually discussed
According to Bloomberg, Apple executives discussed the possibility of bidding for Perplexity. The report described the talks as early-stage and said they might not lead to an offer.
That leaves four distinct transaction stages:
| Status | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Internal discussion | Reportedly occurred inside Apple. |
| Management approach | No acquisition approach to Perplexity’s management was reported at that stage. |
| Formal offer | Not established by the available reporting. |
| Completed acquisition | Not verified. |
Perplexity told Reuters that it had “no knowledge of any current or future M&A discussions involving Perplexity.” Apple did not immediately comment. That response does not disprove internal Apple deliberations; it indicates that Perplexity was not aware of current or future merger discussions.

Why Perplexity could appeal to Apple
A ready-made AI-search product
Perplexity offers conversational search that generates answers with web links and citations. Buying the company could potentially give Apple an established AI-search interface instead of requiring Apple to build every consumer-facing search feature internally.
The attraction would likely be the product and supporting technology—not necessarily ownership of a frontier AI model. Perplexity’s value could include search user experience, retrieval and citation systems, engineering talent, product leadership, and relationships with model and content providers. An acquisition would not automatically solve Apple’s broader challenges involving foundation models, infrastructure, privacy, accuracy, or integration.
A possible boost for Siri and Apple Intelligence
Strategically, Perplexity could potentially help Apple provide richer web-grounded answers through Siri, improve research and summarization features, and add AI-powered search capabilities to Safari. It could also give Apple a recognizable consumer AI brand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThose are possible benefits, not a confirmed Apple product roadmap. The reporting described potential access to talent and technology; it did not establish that Apple had decided to replace Siri’s technology with Perplexity.
Less dependence on Google
Apple’s relationship with Google Search formed an important part of the background. Eddy Cue testified in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Google antitrust case that Apple was examining AI-search providers including Perplexity, OpenAI, and Anthropic as possible alternatives or complements to conventional search. A MacRumors report also identified Apple’s reliance on Google and the changing search market as strategic context.
That does not mean Apple had decided to end its Google arrangement. Search affects user habits, quality expectations, advertising economics, privacy positioning, regulatory exposure, and the financial value of Apple’s existing relationship with Google. The antitrust case was a backdrop to Apple’s exploration, not proof of a planned immediate switch.
Could Apple have partnered with Perplexity instead?
Yes. Reporting said Apple and Perplexity had met several times about a possible partnership. A deal could have involved making Perplexity available as a Safari search option, integrating its capabilities with Siri, or using it alongside Apple’s other AI relationships.
A partnership would offer Apple less control than an acquisition, but it could also reduce the financial and operational risks:
- Lower upfront cost: Apple could access technology without buying the entire company.
- More flexibility: Apple could work with Perplexity, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, or other providers rather than committing to one.
- Lower integration burden: Apple would not immediately have to absorb Perplexity’s workforce, product, infrastructure, and business model.
- Less acquisition exposure: A partnership could be easier to structure than a transaction combining a major device platform with an AI-search provider.
Ownership, however, could give Apple greater control over product direction, distribution, data practices, engineering priorities, and integration across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Safari, and Siri.
How much might Perplexity have cost?
At the time of the June 2025 report, Perplexity’s latest funding activity reportedly valued the company at approximately $14 billion. That was a valuation from a private financing round, not a confirmed price Apple offered.
A purchase near that valuation would have exceeded Apple’s approximately $3 billion acquisition of Beats in 2014, making it unusually large for Apple at that point. But an acquisition price could differ substantially from a funding valuation because it might include a control premium, retention packages, earn-outs, stock consideration, assumed liabilities, regulatory conditions, and investor approvals.
Later reporting referred to a Perplexity valuation of approximately $20 billion. That later figure should not be treated as the price Apple was considering in June 2025. It also does not prove that Apple remained in negotiations.
Why a deal could be difficult
Price and deal economics
A multibillion-dollar purchase would need to create more value than a partnership or internal development effort. Apple would have to justify not only the purchase price but also integration costs, employee-retention packages, infrastructure spending, and the opportunity cost of limiting other AI partnerships.
Regulatory scrutiny
An Apple acquisition would combine a major device-platform owner, a leading browser and app-distribution ecosystem, and a potential AI-search gatekeeper. That combination could invite scrutiny from competition authorities, particularly while Apple’s search distribution and Google’s position were already under examination.
Copyright and publisher disputes
Perplexity has faced legal and publisher disputes concerning how it gathers, uses, and attributes web content. Complaints and litigation materials, including those in cases involving Britannica and news publishers, show the type of legal exposure an acquirer could inherit. See the Britannica complaint and additional publisher litigation materials. The existence or status of a particular claim should not be confused with a final court finding.
Integration and talent risk
Apple would need to decide whether to keep Perplexity independent, fold it into Siri and Apple Intelligence, use its technology behind the scenes, or shut down overlapping features. The company would also need to retain key researchers and engineers. These are analytical risks: an acquisition does not guarantee that employees remain or that a startup keeps its speed and culture inside a large corporation.

Other strategic relationships
Perplexity was also reportedly in advanced discussions with Samsung about bringing its AI features to Samsung devices and integrating its search capabilities into Samsung’s browser. Such relationships could increase Perplexity’s strategic value while making exclusivity and integration more complicated. The report is available through coverage of the Samsung discussions.

The important signal was not that Apple had found a deal at a specific price. It was that Apple was considering whether buying an established AI-search company could accelerate its response to a rapidly changing search market.
For Apple, buying Perplexity could offer speed, talent, a consumer product, and greater strategic independence. The disadvantages would include a potentially high valuation, regulatory exposure, legal liabilities, integration risk, and less freedom to work with multiple AI providers.

From an investor’s perspective, the report should therefore be treated as a strategy signal rather than a financial forecast. It does not establish the purchase price, expected return, funding method, earnings impact, or probability of a transaction. It also does not prove that Apple would replace Google Search or make Perplexity the default search engine on its devices.
What happened afterward?
Later reporting in August 2025 said Apple had also internally discussed acquiring French AI company Mistral. That suggests Apple’s exploration of AI acquisitions continued, but it does not prove that the Perplexity idea was abandoned, advanced, or replaced.
Based on the available evidence through August 18, 2026, there is no verified announcement of a formal Apple offer, signed agreement, or completed Apple acquisition of Perplexity.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple reportedly considered whether to bid for Perplexity AI, but the evidence supports an internal, preliminary discussion—not a formal offer or completed acquisition. The episode highlights Apple’s need to strengthen AI search and reduce dependence on external providers while leaving open whether it will buy, partner, or continue building internally.
