But this was a step in Apple’s “China plus one” strategy, not a withdrawal from China. India gained a larger role in final assembly and exports while China remained central to Apple’s production ecosystem.
What changed with the iPhone 16 launch?
Apple announced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus on September 9, 2024, alongside the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Availability for the standard models began September 20 in launch markets. Apple’s announcement did not publish a country-by-country manufacturing split; the production details came from supply-chain reporting. Apple’s launch announcement and its iPhone newsroom archive establish the launch timeline.
The notable development was not simply that another iPhone was assembled in India. Indian facilities had assembled earlier iPhone generations. Rather, reports said Foxconn began producing the Pro and Pro Max in India shortly after the global launch, extending Indian assembly into Apple’s flagship tier. That timing does not establish that India-made Pro phones were available in every market on launch day. Supply-chain reporting on the Pro models described the India production plan; subsequent coverage characterized it as a milestone.
Why India making Pro models mattered
Pro-series production is a more consequential signal than shifting only older or standard models. Flagship assembly requires factories to meet demanding quality, yield, process-control and schedule requirements, with substantial commercial risk if production falls behind or fails to meet standards. Pro phones also use sophisticated camera systems and higher-value components, increasing the complexity of coordinating their assembly.

The reported move suggests Apple and its manufacturing partners were willing to qualify Indian facilities for an important part of the annual flagship ramp. It does not prove India had replicated every capability of China’s manufacturing network: the reported milestone concerns assembly, not a fully localized component supply chain.
What “reduce dependence on China” means
Manufacturing dependence is not one thing. It can refer to final assembly, component sourcing, tooling and production engineering, supplier concentration, logistics, workforce expertise, or even sales and distribution. Moving final assembly to India reduces concentration in one part of that system, but a phone assembled there may still use components, subassemblies, tooling or equipment made in China or elsewhere in East Asia.
Apple’s public supply-chain information discusses its global supplier network, oversight and standards, but it does not provide a complete country-of-origin bill of materials for the iPhone 16. “Assembled in India” therefore should not be read as “made entirely in India” or “China-free.”

Why Apple was diversifying production
Apple’s move reflected several overlapping incentives rather than a single trigger:
- Geopolitical and tariff risk: Concentrating production in China exposed Apple to the possibility of trade restrictions and tariffs. Later reporting described a stronger push to route US-bound production through India as tariff concerns intensified, but those later developments did not originate the 2024 Pro-production decision. Bloomberg’s 2026 account and Associated Press reporting discuss the later trade-policy context.
- Disruption resilience: China’s COVID-era restrictions and disruptions at major manufacturing centers showed how a small number of enormous campuses can become single points of failure for global supply and launch inventory. Time’s account of Apple’s India expansion provides background on the concentration and diversification issue.
- Factory concentration: Foxconn’s Zhengzhou complex came to represent Apple’s reliance on vast Chinese assembly operations. Building capacity elsewhere gives Apple another place to produce if one site or region is disrupted, although it does not instantly replace China’s scale.
- India’s industrial-policy support: India’s production-linked incentive program sought to attract electronics manufacturing and exports, making the country more appealing as a second major assembly base. Incentives helped the case but do not alone explain Apple’s decision. CIGI’s analysis discusses the policy context.
- India’s own market: India is also a growing market for Apple. Local production can improve supply flexibility and support the company’s broader commercial presence, not just exports.
The manufacturers behind India’s expansion
Foxconn
Foxconn was the principal reported partner for Indian assembly of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. It has operated major Apple-related facilities in southern India and has expanded capacity there. Its role also illustrates a key distinction: Apple can diversify production geographically while still relying heavily on a small number of contract manufacturers.
Tata Electronics
Tata became a more important Apple manufacturing partner after acquiring and operating facilities previously associated with Wistron and expanding its electronics ambitions. Its involvement widened Apple’s India manufacturing base beyond Taiwanese contract manufacturers. Reporting on the Indian output and partner landscape is available from the Indian Express and Bloomberg.

Pegatron
Pegatron was also associated with iPhone assembly in India. Reporting that Tata was in discussions related to Pegatron’s Chennai operation showed that ownership and operating arrangements were evolving; it did not mean that every Indian iPhone line had the same owner or operator.
How large India’s role became
Available estimates show substantial growth, but they measure different periods and things. They should not be combined into a single precise production series.

| Period or measure | Reported estimate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal year ending March 2024 | About 14% of iPhones | Bloomberg-based estimate of India’s share of Apple iPhone production for that fiscal year, reported by MacRumors. |
| Fiscal 2024 output value | About $14 billion | Reported value of iPhone assembly output in India; it is not the same as Indian value added. See the Indian Express report. |
| Calendar year 2025 | About 55 million iPhones, or roughly one-quarter of Apple’s production | Bloomberg’s March 2026 estimate, attributed to people familiar with the matter rather than to an Apple-published production breakdown. Bloomberg report. |
The fiscal-year share, fiscal-year dollar value and calendar-year unit estimate are not directly comparable: they use different time periods, metrics and attribution. In particular, gross production value is not a measure of how much income, value or profit stayed in India.

What India gains—and what remains difficult
Expanded iPhone assembly can bring investment, manufacturing jobs, export activity, supplier opportunities and a deeper place in global electronics supply chains. It also gives India’s industrial policy a prominent example of attracting high-volume production.
But assembly captures only part of a phone’s total value. Imported components can account for a substantial part of the product, and production may still depend on foreign-owned contract manufacturers. Turning assembly growth into broader domestic capability requires reliable logistics, infrastructure, skilled labor, efficient customs processes and suppliers that can consistently meet Apple’s quality requirements. Rapid expansion can also strain worker housing, transport and workplace-compliance systems.
These are reasons to distinguish factory output from Indian economic value added. The reported $14 billion figure describes output value, not an equivalent amount of locally created income or wages.

What the shift means for China
India’s growth may reduce the marginal growth of China-based assembly, put pressure on some employment and supplier demand, and encourage other manufacturers to consider alternatives. Over time, sustained production outside China could also shift some supplier relationships and manufacturing know-how.
China nevertheless retains major advantages: dense component clusters, experienced engineering and production workforces, established logistics, and facilities already capable of handling Apple’s peak launch volumes. The early iPhone 16 shift is best understood as diversification at the margin and the development of a second major hub—not evidence of a rapid collapse in China’s role.
What it meant for US buyers and tariffs
The 2024 decision to add India assembly, including the reported Pro production, predates the later acceleration of India-to-US shipments described in tariff-related coverage. In 2025 and afterward, India became especially important as a source of US-bound iPhones as Apple and its suppliers sought to limit exposure to China-related trade measures. The distinction matters: tariffs can accelerate an existing diversification plan without being its sole cause.
Assembly in India does not guarantee tariff-free US entry. Trade treatment depends on policy at the time, customs origin rules and how a product’s production is assessed. Nor does a shipment route establish that every component originated in the assembly country.
Does the country of assembly change the iPhone for consumers?
Manufacturing country alone is not evidence that two iPhones have different performance, software or quality. Buyers should pay more attention to the regional model number, SIM configuration, warranty coverage, regulatory features and seller. Those can vary by sales market, whereas the location of final assembly by itself does not establish a consumer-facing specification difference.
Apple did not publish a complete iPhone 16 country-by-country production breakdown. As a result, the available reporting can establish a significant Indian assembly milestone, but not the full origin of every part or the precise production mix of each model in every market.
