A sound approach starts by deciding how much loss you could tolerate, choosing between direct Bitcoin and a listed exchange-traded product, and understanding the custody, recovery, cost, and tax responsibilities attached to that choice.
What “long term” does—and does not—mean
“Long term” describes how long you intend to hold an investment; it is not a promise that Bitcoin will rise or that waiting will make a loss disappear. Bitcoin.org warns that Bitcoin can fluctuate substantially and that an investment can lose money over short or long periods. Its legal disclaimer, last amended July 5, 2016, says: “The investment in Bitcoin can lead to loss of money over short or even long periods.” Treat that as general risk guidance, not a forecast.
Before considering an investment, set a loss boundary: what amount could fall sharply without interfering with essential spending, debt payments, or other obligations? The available evidence supports the existence of substantial price risk, not a particular allocation percentage. There is no universal Bitcoin allocation that can be prescribed for every reader.
Choose how you want exposure to Bitcoin
There are two materially different routes covered here: holding Bitcoin through a wallet or custodian, and buying shares of a listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP). They are not interchangeable. Direct Bitcoin involves wallet access or reliance on a custodian; an ETP share is a security held through a brokerage account, with product-specific arrangements and disclosures.

#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Consideration | Direct Bitcoin through a wallet or custodian | Listed spot Bitcoin ETP share |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Bitcoin in a wallet, or an interest held through a custodian under that provider’s arrangement. | A listed security issued by an ETP structure, not a Bitcoin wallet balance. |
| Access and recovery | With self-custody, you manage keys and backups. With a custodian, access depends on the provider and its procedures. | You manage brokerage-account access; review issuer documents for the product’s custody and operating arrangements. |
| Risks to examine | Wallet security, backup and recovery, devices, and transaction handling; for a custodian, security, solvency, fees, access restrictions, and legal terms. | Issuer and product disclosures, valuation, liquidity, custody, fees, technology, cybersecurity, legal, regulatory, and tax risks. |
| What the cited sources establish | General custody guidance, not a comparison of individual providers. | Regulatory context and disclosure categories, not current fees, issuer rankings, or suitability advice. |
In January 2024, the SEC approved certain spot Bitcoin ETP listings. SEC Chair Gary Gensler emphasized that the approval did not endorse Bitcoin or crypto trading platforms, and advised caution about the risks of Bitcoin and products tied to crypto. Read the SEC statement on the approval in that limited context: approval of certain listings is not a guarantee of value or a recommendation to invest.
If you hold Bitcoin directly, plan for custody and recovery
With self-custody, control comes with responsibility: protect the keys that provide access, secure the wallet password, and make a backup that you can use to restore access. Losing a device without a proper backup can make funds unrecoverable. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance recommends keeping only small amounts on everyday devices and describes offline storage for savings.

A Bitcoin hardware wallet is one option for offline storage, but it does not replace a recovery plan. Before moving funds, learn how the specific wallet backs up and restores access. Keep backups secure and avoid relying on a single device or copy. Bitcoin.org’s hardware wallet chooser also warns that loss without a proper backup can leave funds unrecoverable. No particular brand or model is recommended here.
If instead you use a custodian, you avoid personally managing wallet keys but take on dependence on that company’s security and solvency. Review how the provider holds assets, what happens if access is restricted, what fees apply, and what legal arrangement governs your account. “Not holding the keys” does not mean there is no risk; it means the risk is allocated differently.

Evaluate an ETP as a product, not just as a Bitcoin proxy
Before buying an ETP share, inspect its current prospectus and other issuer disclosures. Check how the product values its Bitcoin holdings, how shares trade relative to that valuation, its liquidity, custody arrangements, fees and other costs, and its tax discussion. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s July 1, 2025 staff statement identifies disclosure considerations that include valuation, liquidity, technological, cybersecurity, legal, regulatory, and tax risks. Those categories are prompts for reviewing a product’s documents, not a ranking or endorsement of any current ETP.
Do not assume that a listed product and direct Bitcoin have identical ownership, costs, tax treatment, protections, or operational requirements. The cited SEC materials do not establish current product fees or compare issuers, so those details must be checked in the documents for the particular product you are considering.

Make the decision in a deliberate order
- Define your loss limit. Decide what loss you could bear without disrupting essential expenses or obligations. Do not substitute a generic allocation rule for your own circumstances.
- Select the exposure route. Decide whether you want direct Bitcoin—with wallet or custodian responsibilities—or a listed ETP share with issuer, product, and brokerage-account considerations.
- Test the operational plan. For self-custody, understand backup and recovery before transferring funds. For a custodian, assess security, solvency, access restrictions, fees, and legal terms.
- Read the relevant product documents. For an ETP, review current disclosures for valuation, liquidity, custody, costs, and risks instead of relying on the fact that it is listed.
- Check local tax requirements. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction. Use current local tax-authority guidance or consult a qualified professional before acting.
Taxes depend on where you live and what you hold
Bitcoin.org notes that tax obligations vary by jurisdiction and advises readers to consult a qualified accountant. That general guidance does not establish current tax forms, rates, holding-period rules, or treatment for either direct Bitcoin or ETP shares in your circumstances. Do not assume the tax treatment is the same for the two routes; check current guidance from the relevant tax authority or seek advice from a qualified tax professional. Bitcoin.org’s getting-started guidance provides general information, not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific tax advice.
