Intel notified three states in October 2024 of planned layoffs affecting about 2,004 employees: 1,300 in Oregon, 385 in Arizona and 319 in California, according to CRN’s report on the notices. These were planned employment actions—not confirmation that every affected worker ultimately left Intel—and they are not a new 2026 layoff announcement.

How many Intel jobs were targeted in each state?

CRN reported the following planned cuts based on Intel notices to the states. The figures add up to 2,004, which is the basis for the rounded “2,000 jobs” headline.

State Planned layoffs reported by CRN Reported locations
Oregon 1,300 Aloha and Hillsboro
Arizona 385 Chandler
California 319 San Jose and Folsom
Total 2,004 Three states

The state counts and locations are CRN’s contemporaneous reporting from the notices. CRN said an Arizona public-records official had not supplied the underlying notice by publication time, so the Arizona details here are reported figures rather than independently checked against that original filing.

When were the layoffs expected to begin?

CRN reported that the California and Oregon layoffs were expected to begin November 15, 2024. The report described two notice arrangements for employees in those states: 60 days’ notice, or four weeks’ notice with nine weeks of pay and benefits in lieu of further notice. The source did not establish an Arizona start date or schedule, and it does not show that every affected employee received the same arrangement.

A WARN notice communicates a planned employment action. It should not be read as a record of completed separations, nor does the reported schedule establish the final number of workers who left.

How did these notices fit Intel’s 2024 cost-cutting plan?

An Intel spokesperson told CRN the cuts were part of the plan CEO Pat Gelsinger announced in August 2024: to eliminate more than 15,000 jobs and reduce costs by more than $10 billion. The spokesperson said, “As part of the broad-based cost savings plan we announced in August, we are making the hard but necessary decisions to reduce the size of our workforce. These are the most difficult decisions we ever make, and we are treating people with care and respect.”

In a September 2024 message to employees, Gelsinger said voluntary early-retirement and separation offers had taken Intel more than halfway toward an approximately 15,000-person workforce-reduction target by year-end. That company-wide progress update provides context; it does not specify how many people in the three states had accepted offers or how the October notices would translate into completed departures.

Gelsinger described the company’s broader priorities as improving cost competitiveness, advancing Intel Foundry and refocusing the product portfolio around x86. He also said Intel planned to reduce or exit about two-thirds of its global real estate by year-end. Those were Intel’s stated strategic aims, not a notice-by-notice explanation for each affected job.

Are these the same as Intel’s later layoffs?

No. These are the October 2024 notices reported by CRN. Oregon’s official WARN index lists distinct Intel records from 2025, including a July filing and later revisions. Those later records should not be combined with the 2024 state counts. California’s Employment Development Department also provides WARN information and public-record access guidance.

Intel’s Q2 2026 SEC filing discusses a separate “2025 Restructuring Plan,” intended to lower expenses, streamline the organization and reduce management layers. The filing says most actions under that plan were completed in 2025, with the remainder expected in 2026. That later restructuring is distinct from the 2024 notices and does not change their reported counts.

What the notices do—and do not—establish

  • They establish a reported plan: CRN reported 1,300 planned cuts in Oregon, 385 in Arizona and 319 in California.
  • They do not confirm final separations: the reporting does not verify how many employees ultimately left in this round.
  • They do not supply a complete worker-level picture: the sources do not establish final headcount reductions, severance eligibility for every affected worker or a state-by-state breakdown by job function.
  • They do not quantify local economic effects: no attributable statistic in the cited sources measures downstream job losses or effects on local spending from these specific notices.
