On its October 31, 2024, third-quarter earnings call, then-CEO Pat Gelsinger said Intel planned to return to off-package memory for Panther Lake, Nova Lake and later products. The distinction matters: Lunar Lake’s approach brought power and space benefits, but Intel said its cost and manufacturing complexity were difficult to scale economically.
What Intel meant by “one-off”
Lunar Lake is Intel’s Core Ultra 200V mobile processor family. Its unusual feature was placing memory on the processor package. Gelsinger’s “one-off” description concerned that packaging choice: Intel said Panther Lake, Nova Lake and subsequent products would put memory outside the processor package, in a more traditional arrangement. Thurrott’s November 1, 2024 report on the earnings-call comments provides the direct context.
That is narrower than saying Lunar Lake itself was a failed product, that Intel would stop pursuing low-power designs, or that every future Intel laptop would have upgradeable RAM. The processor’s package design, its broader efficiency goals and each laptop maker’s construction are separate questions.
Why Lunar Lake put memory on the package
Moving memory close to the processor shortens the path data travels. Intel said the arrangement could reduce power used for data movement and free motherboard space, helping laptop makers build thin, light systems. Intel cited an approximately 40% reduction in data-movement power in its platform material; that is an Intel architectural claim, not a promise of 40% longer battery life for a complete laptop. Battery results also depend on the display, battery size, cooling, firmware and workload.

The memory arrangement was one part of a platform designed around efficiency. Lunar Lake also combined CPU, GPU and NPU capabilities in a mobile processor aimed at thin-and-light PCs. Intel’s launch material described Core Ultra 200V systems as part of the emerging AI PC category, but AI acceleration does not by itself determine whether a laptop is a good fit for a buyer’s applications.
Intel’s explanation of the packaging and space rationale is in its Lunar Lake PC-maker announcement and its Computex 2024 architecture announcement.
The trade-off: efficiency and space versus flexibility and cost
On-package memory changes more than where a component sits. It affects how a laptop can be configured, serviced and manufactured. The comparison below is general; a specific laptop’s memory capacity, repair options and performance depend on its design.

| Consideration | Lunar Lake-style on-package memory | Off-package memory |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Memory is mounted on the processor package. | Memory is separate from the processor package and located on the motherboard. |
| Power and board space | Shorter data paths can lower data-movement power; the arrangement can save motherboard space. | Longer paths may use more power, while board-level placement offers different layout options. |
| Capacity choices | Capacity is set as part of the package configuration. Intel’s Lunar Lake materials listed configurations up to 32GB. | It can be easier for manufacturers to offer a range of capacities, though the laptop design still sets limits. |
| Upgradeability | Package-mounted memory is generally not a conventional user-upgradeable module. | Memory may be replaceable or configurable, but many laptops still solder it to the board. |
| Manufacturing and sourcing | Requires coordination of memory and processor packaging, adding complexity. | Uses a more conventional arrangement and can provide more flexibility in system configuration. |
| Economics | Intel said Lunar Lake’s design and manufacturing requirements pressured margins. | Intel described the later roadmap as having better cost and margin characteristics; exact product costs were not stated. |
The practical limit for buyers is important: Lunar Lake’s platform configurations topped out at 32GB in Intel’s materials, which may rule it out for some memory-intensive work. A laptop’s memory is typically fixed at purchase in this design, but check the exact model’s specifications and service documentation rather than assuming every machine has identical construction.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy Intel changed direction
Intel’s explanation combined product economics with a change in expected demand. Lunar Lake was initially conceived as a relatively focused, efficiency-first design. The growth of Copilot+ PCs raised expected demand, so Intel pursued the product at greater scale. A packaging approach that can make sense for a narrower product becomes more consequential when the company expects to ship it across a wider market.
Intel executives connected Lunar Lake’s design and external manufacturing requirements with margin pressure. That supports saying the approach was economically difficult to scale; it does not establish that Intel lost money on every chip. In later earnings commentary, Intel presented Panther Lake and Nova Lake as having more favorable cost and margin characteristics. See the company’s Q4 2024 earnings-call comments.

The choice also sits within Intel’s broader manufacturing transition: the company has been trying to use its own process technology more extensively while improving product economics. Panther Lake’s position as the first client product built on Intel 18A is part of that story, but it does not mean every component or manufacturing step is necessarily made in-house.
What this means for laptop buyers
The processor family alone cannot tell you which laptop to buy. Memory capacity, battery size, display, cooling, firmware and price all affect the experience. Consider how you use the machine and verify the complete model’s specifications.

What Panther Lake and Nova Lake signal
Intel positioned Panther Lake as a continuation of the efficiency goal with a different package strategy. The company said Panther Lake would use Intel 18A and target Lunar Lake-level power efficiency with substantially higher performance. Its announcement described high-volume production plans for 2025 and broad availability beginning in January 2026. Those were roadmap statements, not proof that a particular laptop is currently in stock in every country.
Intel’s subsequent roadmap commentary placed Nova Lake toward the end of 2026. That timing is a company target, not a guaranteed retail date. For either family, buyers should check the specific OEM model, market, memory configuration and shipping status rather than infer availability from a chip announcement.
Intel’s statements on Panther Lake and Nova Lake appear in its Panther Lake announcement, Q2 2025 earnings-call comments and the previously cited Q4 2024 earnings comments.

Why on-package memory is not inherently a bad idea
The design is a trade-off, not a universal mistake. It can be valuable when lower power draw and a compact motherboard matter more than user upgrades, a wide menu of memory capacities or the simplest possible supply chain. It is less compelling as a default for a broad portfolio if the added packaging and sourcing costs undermine the economics of high-volume products.
That distinction is also why comparisons with Apple or Qualcomm need care. Their product portfolios, operating systems, memory configurations, manufacturing relationships and control over complete systems differ from Intel’s broad market of processors sold to many PC makers. A packaging strategy that works in one ecosystem does not automatically scale the same way across Intel’s OEM business.
The broader lesson in Intel’s roadmap
Intel has used successive mobile architectures to address different design and manufacturing objectives. Meteor Lake marked a major tile-based transition; Lunar Lake put particular emphasis on mobile efficiency and on-package memory. The next step, as described by Intel, is to retain an efficiency focus while changing the memory arrangement and improving cost and scale. That is a strategic adjustment—not evidence that every lesson from Lunar Lake is being discarded.
For buyers, the key takeaway is specific: Lunar Lake’s memory design can benefit compact, efficient laptops, but it limits memory flexibility and was associated with margin pressure for Intel. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on the laptop’s price, configuration and the work you need it to do.
