To change the currency for an eligible Uber ride, open Wallet → Preferred Currency in the Uber app. Choose Always pay in local currency or select an available preferred currency, then check the fare breakdown before booking. The setting applies to eligible future rides—not every Uber service or a ride already confirmed.
Change Uber to local currency
- Open the Uber app and tap your account or profile menu.
- Tap Wallet, then Preferred Currency or Set preferred currency. Labels can vary by account, region, language, and app version.
- Select Always pay in local currency and confirm if prompted.
- Request a new eligible ride and inspect the confirmation-screen fare breakdown before booking.
Uber says this preference applies to subsequent eligible rides. Set it before requesting the ride: once a ride is confirmed, you cannot change its currency selection. See Uber’s currency-preference guidance and its Home Currency Pricing terms.

Choose an available home or preferred currency
In Wallet → Preferred Currency, select a currency offered for your account and trip. This is Uber’s Preferred Currency Pricing feature for eligible transportation transactions; it is not a universal app-wide display switch. Availability depends on the rider’s home currency, destination, account, ride, and payment method. For instance, Uber lists USD for some trips in Canada, the eurozone, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan, and EUR for some trips in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan. Those examples do not guarantee eligibility for every rider or ride. Uber’s current Help page says Australian riders traveling overseas cannot use Preferred Currency Pricing and see fares in local currency.
The setting does not change Uber’s local fare, Uber Cash or gift-card currency, Uber Eats or delivery orders, historical receipts, or the currency of a ride already completed. Uber’s Help page excludes Eats and delivery from this feature. Its terms describe the selected Preferred Currency as a billing currency for eligible transportation services.

Decide between local and preferred currency
| Local currency | Preferred or home currency |
|---|---|
| Uber does not apply its Preferred Currency conversion fee to a local-currency transaction. Your card issuer may still apply its own foreign-transaction fee or exchange-rate terms. | Uber shows the converted amount before booking and may apply a conversion fee. Your card issuer may also charge fees. |
| Often worth considering if your card has no foreign-transaction fee and offers a favorable exchange rate. | May be more convenient if you value seeing the amount in your home currency or your card’s foreign-exchange costs are higher than Uber’s displayed fee. |
| Your card issuer handles the conversion to your account currency. | Review the displayed conversion rate and fee; Uber does not guarantee this option saves money compared with your card issuer’s conversion. |
Uber Help describes the applicable rate as mid-market; Uber’s legal terms say the rate is provided by a financial partner and displayed before booking. Check the rate and fee in the confirmation-screen fare breakdown rather than assuming it matches a card network, bank, or currency app. To view it, use the information tooltip in the fare breakdown.
Uber’s listed conversion fees
Uber’s Help page, as reported on August 18, 2026, lists the following Preferred Currency conversion fees. It says the fee is calculated on the total trip fare, including applicable taxes and legally required fees, but excluding tips. Rates may change or vary by jurisdiction; use the fee shown for your specific ride before confirming.

| Preferred currency | Uber-listed conversion fee |
|---|---|
| USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, JPY, BRL, ARS, PEN, UYU, PYG, CHF, and ILS | 1.5% |
| COP | 0.4% |
| KRW | 1.0% |
| MXN | 0.4% |
| BRL in the specified situation | 1.5%, plus a 3.5% IOF charge by the payment processor |
Uber says the conversion fee does not apply to tips. Tips are charged in the preferred currency for the transaction without that fee. Cancellation fees, arrears, and destination-change charges use the currency associated with the original transaction. See Uber’s current currency-fee and transaction guidance.
Why Preferred Currency may be missing
Preferred Currency Pricing is conditional, not a setting Uber offers for every account and trip. The option may be unavailable because of the destination or home-currency combination, the ride type, payment method, or profile. Uber’s Help page describes eligibility as limited to selected markets and rides.

Rank #3
- This card is redeemable via the Uber app within the U.S. in cities where Uber is available.
- Redemption: Mobile App
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Ride type: Rentals, Reserve, Scheduled rides, rides involving third-party partners, and Uber Eats or delivery orders are excluded or may be excluded. The feature is intended for eligible on-demand rides such as UberX, UberXL, Uber Black, and Uber Green.
- Payment source: Credit cards, debit cards, and digital wallets such as Apple Pay or Google Pay are generally supported, subject to currency-specific restrictions. Uber lists Split Fare, Uber Cash, Uber Money, cash, gift cards, Alipay, Venmo, and Zaakpay as ineligible. Some currency and payment-method combinations also have restrictions; for example, Uber says BRL transactions support credit cards only.
- Profile or account: A business profile linked to an employer or organization, a voucher, or other account-level restriction may prevent eligibility. Uber may not have enabled the feature for the particular account or transaction.
Changing the payment method does not necessarily change the selected currency. Uber says an eligible replacement method can keep the preferred currency; if the new method is ineligible, the ride is automatically priced in local currency. Do not change account-country details to force a currency: Uber’s documented feature depends on supported combinations and transaction eligibility, not a stated profile workaround.
Troubleshoot a currency that looks wrong
- Confirm that the pickup point is in the country you intend to travel in.
- Force-close and reopen the app; this is a practical troubleshooting step, not a currency procedure Uber documents.
- Open Wallet → Preferred Currency and check the saved choice. Select Always pay in local currency if local billing is your goal.
- For an eligible test ride, use a standard on-demand ride and an eligible card or digital wallet. Avoid Uber Cash, gift cards, vouchers, and a restricted business profile.
- Review the currency, conversion rate, fee, and amount in the confirmation-screen fare breakdown before booking.
If the app shows a different amount after you change the preference, do not assume currency conversion is the only cause. A fare estimate can also change because of demand, route, waiting time, tolls, taxes, or other ride variables. Reserve trips have a separate rate-timing rule: Uber’s terms say their exchange rate may be determined when the trip is completed rather than booked, so the final preferred-currency amount may differ from the booking estimate.

After booking or after a charge
Once a ride is confirmed, Uber says you can change the payment method but not the currency selection for that transaction. Changing the Wallet preference is for subsequent eligible rides; it does not retroactively convert a completed charge. For a charge that appears in the wrong currency, compare the confirmation-screen fare breakdown, trip receipt, and card statement. Note the trip ID and whether it was a Reserve, Rental, Scheduled, or third-party ride, or whether the payment method changed after confirmation. Then contact Uber Support with the receipt and trip details; do not assume a refund or reprocessing is guaranteed.
