Instant Checkmate is a paid people-search service, but its reports should not be treated as verified background checks. The FTC’s 2023 action concerning Instant Checkmate and TruthFinder raised concerns about accuracy claims, alerts that could make traffic tickets appear to be criminal or arrest records, review practices, and marketing reports for employment or tenant screening. If a report could affect a consequential decision, verify the underlying facts with authoritative records.

What is Instant Checkmate?

Instant Checkmate sells people-search reports. The FTC complaint describes searches that could begin with free initial results, with a subscription required to access full reports. The complaint lists categories that reports may contain, including names, birth dates, phone numbers, address histories, relatives, arrest and criminal records, licensing information, social or dating profiles, and email addresses. These are possible categories—not a guarantee that any particular report contains them or that information is complete or current. The FTC case record

What did the FTC say about Instant Checkmate?

In September 2023, the FTC announced that TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate would pay $5.8 million to settle charges concerning misleading claims about background-report accuracy and Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) violations related to marketing reports for employee and tenant screening. That figure is the announced settlement amount for the two companies, not a measure of consumer losses or a finding that every report was inaccurate. FTC announcement

Accuracy claims and alerts

The FTC said the companies promoted report accuracy despite relying on third-party information providers that disclaimed accuracy, and alleged the companies did not verify the information. The agency also said alerts could imply a person had a criminal or arrest record when the underlying record was only a traffic ticket. The public materials do not establish an error rate, nor do they show that every report or alert is wrong. FTC announcement

Reviews and promotional practices

The FTC said the companies offered customers a free premium report in exchange for posting a review on HighYa, with the aim of increasing positive reviews and reducing the prominence of negative ones. This is relevant context when weighing review evidence, but it does not establish that all Instant Checkmate reviews were manipulated. FTC announcement

Case status and earlier FTC action

The federal case is Federal Trade Commission v. Instant Checkmate, LLC et al., civil action 3:23-cv-01674 TWR (MSB), in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. The case page lists an October 11, 2023 stipulated order for permanent injunction, civil penalty judgment, and other relief, and labels the case status “Pending.” FTC case record

The FTC also announced a separate 2014 settlement involving Instant Checkmate and another data broker. The agency explained that a company providing reports expected to be used for employment or housing eligibility may qualify as a consumer reporting agency and be subject to FCRA requirements. Can you use Instant Checkmate for an employment or tenant background check?

Do not use an ordinary people-search subscription as a substitute for a compliant employment or tenant screening process. The FTC’s actions specifically addressed marketing reports for those purposes under the FCRA. Employers and housing providers should use a process that meets applicable legal requirements, including any obligations for notice, authorization, and adverse-action procedures. A people-search report does not become a compliant screening report merely because it contains criminal-record information.

For a personal decision, treat a result as a lead to investigate rather than proof. Check the original court, government, or licensing record, confirm that it belongs to the right person, and consider whether it is up to date. This is especially important for records or alerts that could affect someone’s housing, work, finances, or reputation.

Is Instant Checkmate worth the price?

The FTC complaint gave historical approximate recurring prices of about $34 per month for Instant Checkmate and about $27 per month for TruthFinder during the period it covered. Those allegations are not current prices. The available materials do not establish present plan names, rates, trial or renewal terms, refund rules, or cancellation steps. Check the live checkout and current terms before paying, and save a copy of the offer and confirmation.

Whether a subscription is worthwhile depends on the specific purpose and whether the information can be independently checked. Customer reviews and complaint pages include individual accounts about billing, account access, accuracy, and data suppression, but such self-selected reports do not establish typical service quality or an independent accuracy rate. How to think about removing your own listing

If you find your own information in a people-search listing, look for the service’s current suppression or opt-out process and follow its instructions. Consumer review coverage refers to a suppression tool, but current workflow and coverage are not established here. Suppressing a listing on one service does not guarantee deletion from original public records or other data brokers. Recheck the result later and consult the service’s current policy for its handling of opt-out requests. ConsumerAffairs coverage

How to evaluate people-search services

  • Permitted use: Decide first whether the service is appropriate for your purpose; employment and housing screening require particular care under the FCRA.
  • Sources and scope: Look for clear explanations of where information comes from and what a report may include.
  • Disputes and corrections: Check how to challenge a mismatched, outdated, or incorrect result.
  • Billing: Read the live price, renewal terms, cancellation process, and refund policy before subscribing.
  • Privacy controls: Understand the service’s suppression process and what it does—and does not—remove.

The FTC record is a reason to require transparency and verify important claims, not evidence that another people-search provider is accurate by default.
