Inside Matt Gaetz’s Family Fortune: What the Public Records and Estimates Show

Public records and Forbes reporting put Don Gaetz’s wealth in context, but they do not establish a combined current net worth for the family.

There is no established public figure for the Gaetz family’s combined current wealth. The available sources instead describe Don Gaetz’s wealth separately: his Florida disclosure reported a net worth of $33,351,846 as of October 2, 2023, while Forbes estimated it at about $35 million in November 2024. Those figures use different methods and dates, and neither is a consolidated family balance sheet.

How the Gaetz family fortune was built

Forbes reported that Don Gaetz founded a hospice company in 1978 and that it was sold in the early 2000s for a little over $400 million. The company had other shareholders, so the reported sale price is not the amount Don Gaetz personally received. It also is not a measure of his present net worth. Forbes’s November 19, 2024 report is the source for this account.

What Don Gaetz’s reported net worth figures mean

Figure Source and date What it represents
$33,351,846 Don Gaetz’s filed Florida Form 6F, as of October 2, 2023 A dated, self-reported net-worth disclosure; it is not a live valuation. Florida Commission on Ethics filing
About $35 million Forbes estimate, published November 19, 2024 A media estimate of Don Gaetz’s net worth, not a filed disclosure. Forbes report
A little over $400 million Forbes report on the hospice company’s sale in the early 2000s Reported sale price for a company with other shareholders—not Don Gaetz’s personal proceeds or current net worth. Forbes report

The first two figures are broadly similar in scale, but they should not be treated as directly interchangeable: one is a self-reported filing tied to a specific date, while the other is Forbes’s later estimate. The much larger company-sale figure describes a business transaction, not an individual’s share of the proceeds.

What Matt Gaetz’s disclosures do—and do not—show

House financial disclosure reports cover members’ and certain House personnel’s financial information, including sources, types, amounts, or values of income. They are not, by themselves, a consolidated accounting of a member’s entire family wealth. The House Clerk’s financial disclosure information describes the purpose and public availability of these filings.

Matt Gaetz’s disclosures therefore should not be added to Don Gaetz’s reported net worth to produce a family total. The reviewed sources do not establish a current combined figure, nor do they establish that Matt Gaetz personally owned or received the full proceeds from his father’s company sale.

What the congressional records say about other financial matters

A 2024 House Ethics Committee report records findings involving gifts and disclosure obligations related to Matt Gaetz. Those findings should be understood within the report’s stated scope; they are not a measure of the source or total value of the Gaetz family’s wealth. The House Ethics Committee report is the primary record for those findings.

In a June 2024 House Ways and Means Committee transcript, Gaetz disputed a characterization of his involvement in his father’s personal finances. In that exchange, he testified: “my father has never been involved in my business. I have never asked my father to be involved in my business. My father has never benefited from my business”. That is a statement Gaetz made under oath in response to questions about an email and an alleged household expense; it is not, on its own, independent proof of every financial relationship within the family.
