Dieter Schwarz’s business empire is the privately held Schwarz Group, whose companies reported €185.6 billion in fiscal-year 2025 revenue. Forbes estimated Schwarz’s personal net worth at $61.1 billion on September 10, 2026. Those figures describe different things: annual company revenue is not the owner’s wealth.
What companies are behind Dieter Schwarz’s fortune?
Schwarz Group’s portfolio spans discount and hypermarket retail, recycling, production, and digital and IT services. Its best-known retail banners are Lidl and Kaufland; other reported business areas include PreZero and Schwarz Digits. The group’s fiscal-year 2025 overview reports the following figures:
| Business | Role | Fiscal-year 2025 figure |
|---|---|---|
| Lidl | Discount grocery and general merchandise retail | €140.2 billion in store revenue |
| Kaufland | Hypermarket retail | €36.7 billion in store revenue |
| PreZero | Recycling and environmental services | €4.1 billion |
| Production companies | Manufacturing for the group’s businesses | €5.7 billion |
| Schwarz Digits | Digital and IT services | €2.2 billion |
The retail figures are reported as store revenue; they are not profit, and they should not be added casually to the group’s total as if every category were defined on the same basis. Schwarz Group’s companies reported €185.6 billion in total revenue for fiscal year 2025, a 5.8% increase year over year. The group identifies February 28, 2026, as its balance-sheet date. How large is the group?
In its fiscal-year 2025 reporting, Schwarz Group said it had 604,000 employees and 14,500 Lidl and Kaufland stores combined. It also reported investing roughly €9 billion during the year. These are figures published by the group itself, rather than an independent headcount or store audit. The scale helps explain how a grocery-led retailer became a multinational group with substantial operations beyond shops. (Schwarz Group fiscal-year 2025 report; company overview)

Forbes’ profile put Dieter Schwarz’s real-time net worth at $61.1 billion as of September 10, 2026. It is a dated estimate of an individual’s wealth, not an audited balance-sheet figure or a measure of Schwarz Group sales. Estimates of a private owner’s wealth can change as valuations and assumptions change. (Forbes profile)

- This book is in perfect condition. It has never even been opened. It is straight from the store, unmarked, in pristine condition.
The older $23.5 billion figure in the original framing should therefore not be presented as current. Nor does the group’s €185.6 billion of fiscal-year revenue mean Schwarz personally has that amount: revenue is money earned by the companies over a reporting period, before costs and other financial considerations. Net worth is an estimate of the value of an individual’s assets minus liabilities. The currencies and measurement periods also differ.

Lidl’s corporate history says its first store opened in Germany in 1973, staffed by three employees and carrying around 500 product lines. The company says international expansion beyond Germany began in the 1990s. That history gives a useful starting point for understanding the retailer’s growth, but it does not by itself establish a detailed personal biography of Schwarz. (Lidl corporate history)

What the figures do—and do not—show
- They show a diversified operating group: retail is the largest reported component, alongside recycling, production, and digital and IT services.
- They show scale, not profitability: revenue figures do not reveal operating costs, margins, debt, or how much cash the businesses generated.
- They do not establish personal ownership details: the reported group totals and Forbes estimate do not provide a full breakdown of Schwarz’s assets or the legal structure of his holdings.
