Industry Ventures closed its oversubscribed Partnership Holdings VII fund at $900 million on July 2, 2024. The fund is designed to back emerging venture capital managers as well as selected companies they support; the $900 million is the fund’s total committed size, not an amount earmarked solely for startup investments.
What Partnership Holdings VII invests in
Industry Ventures describes Partnership Holdings VII as an early-stage hybrid fund focused on emerging venture capital managers and breakout growth-stage companies. Its strategy uses three routes: investing in venture funds, buying existing investors’ interests in those funds, and investing directly in companies alongside managers it backs. The firm’s announcement explains the strategy but does not publish a complete official allocation across those routes.
Primary commitments to emerging venture funds
A primary commitment provides capital to a venture fund as an investor, or limited partner (LP). Industry Ventures says its Partnership Holdings funds have made these commitments to emerging managers since 2007, aiming to provide patient, long-term capital.
Secondary purchases of LP interests
In a secondary transaction, Industry Ventures buys an existing LP’s interest in a venture fund rather than committing new capital to that fund. The firm says this gives LPs seeking an exit a way to sell their interests, while giving the buyer exposure to the underlying fund.

Direct investments in companies
The fund also invests directly in selected venture-backed companies, often alongside managers it supports. This is distinct from committing capital to a VC fund: a direct investment is made in a company rather than through the fund’s portfolio of startup investments.
How the reported 40/40/20 allocation breaks down
TechCrunch reported that the fund’s allocation was divided among three uses. Industry Ventures’ announcement described the hybrid strategy but did not confirm this exact percentage split, so the figures should be treated as TechCrunch’s reporting rather than an official allocation published by the firm.
| Reported share | Use |
|---|---|
| 40% | Backing VC funds |
| 40% | Direct investments in promising Series B startups from existing partnerships |
| 20% | Buying stakes in emerging investment firms from LPs seeking an exit |
The split helps explain why the $900 million fund size should not be read as $900 million available for direct startup checks. It covers a mix of fund commitments, company investments, and secondary purchases.
Examples and the fund series’ history
Industry Ventures’ July 2024 announcement named prior commitments to 11.2 Capital, Altos Ventures, Amplify Partners, IA Ventures, Lowercase Capital, and Pear Ventures. It also cited co-investments in private technology companies including Uber, Stripe, Datadog, and Coupang. These are examples supplied by the firm, not a complete portfolio or evidence of investment returns.
Rank #3
The predecessor, Partnership Holdings VI, closed at $575 million in November 2021. In that announcement, Industry Ventures reported cumulative Partnership Holdings series activity of more than 185 primary commitments to small venture partnerships, 95 direct investments, 100 co-investment funds, and more than 60 early secondary LP-interest purchases. Those are company-reported totals as of the 2021 release, not updated figures for 2024 or 2026.

Industry Ventures said Partnership Holdings VII was oversubscribed when it announced the final close on July 2, 2024. The firm’s year-end 2024 reflection later described the fund as actively deploying. That statement establishes its status at the time of the reflection; it does not establish how much has since been invested or how much capital remains as of October 2026.
The available announcements do not provide detailed fund terms, an LP roster, or a complete official capital-allocation breakdown. They also do not establish fund performance. Hans Swildens, Industry Ventures’ founder and CEO, characterized it as one of the largest funds focused exclusively on emerging VC managers and among the largest buyers of early secondary LP interests in this market segment. That is the company’s characterization, not an independently verified industry ranking.
