Indonesia did block commercial sales of Google Pixel phones on October 31, 2024, after the Ministry of Industry said Google had not obtained the required TKDN domestic-content certification. But the action was aimed at domestic trade—not a blanket ban on owning every Pixel phone. As of August 18, 2026, no confirmed official Google Pixel retail launch in Indonesia has been established.
The iPhone 16 dispute later moved toward resolution, but that does not automatically mean Pixel phones are now officially authorized for Indonesian sale.

What Indonesia actually banned
Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry said Google Pixel phones could not be commercially traded in Indonesia because they lacked the required Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri (TKDN) certification. The announcement followed Indonesia’s action against commercial sales of Apple’s iPhone 16 series.

However, imported or unregistered phones may face restrictions on access to Indonesian mobile networks through the IMEI system. A phone might still work on Wi-Fi while having problems connecting to cellular networks.

What TKDN means
TKDN is Indonesia’s domestic-content framework for certain technology products. Reporting on the 2024 action described a 40% local-content requirement for smartphones and tablets.

That figure does not necessarily mean that 40% of a phone’s physical components must be manufactured inside Indonesia. Companies may qualify through approved routes such as:
- Local manufacturing or assembly;
- Software or firmware development;
- Investment in local innovation programs; or
- Other approved company-benefit mechanisms under the certification system.
TKDN is therefore a market-access requirement, not simply a bill-of-materials test. The precise route and certification depend on the applicable Indonesian rules and the company’s approved commitments.

Why Google Pixel was affected
The Ministry of Industry said Google Pixel products had not obtained the necessary TKDN certificate. A ministry spokesperson indicated that Google could pursue certification through one of the approved compliance routes before official sales began.

How the Pixel action differed from the iPhone 16 dispute
The two cases were related because both involved Indonesia’s domestic-content rules, but they were not identical.

Contemporaneous reporting said Apple’s earlier investment proposal was approximately $100 million and was considered inadequate, with the shortfall later reported at about $95 million. In February 2025, Indonesia and Apple reached an agreement involving a reported $1 billion investment commitment, after which the iPhone 16 sales restriction was set to end once Apple completed the local-certification process.

What happened to imported Pixel phones?
Reuters, citing Indonesian Industry Ministry data, reported that about 22,000 Google Pixel phones had entered Indonesia during 2024 before the announcement.
Authorities said devices traded without the required authorization could face IMEI-related restrictions. That is different from physically confiscating every privately owned phone. The practical risk is that an unregistered or noncompliant device may lose access to Indonesian cellular service.
A traveler who brings a Pixel from abroad is in a different position from an Indonesian retailer selling imported stock. Personal import, customs treatment, IMEI registration and network access are separate questions. Registration, where available, does not automatically turn an imported device into an officially distributed Indonesian retail product.
Eligibility can depend on the exact model number, import route, customs documentation, taxes, registration timing and Indonesian network rules. Do not assume that every imported Pixel can be registered or that registration guarantees full carrier support.

Is Google Pixel officially sold in Indonesia now?
As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence does not establish a confirmed official Google Indonesia retail channel or Indonesian Google Store listing for Pixel phones. Google’s Indonesian-language support page lists Pixel hardware information, but a support page does not prove that the products are sold locally.
These are four different buying situations:

Reports in 2026 said a U.S.–Indonesia reciprocal-trade agreement changed or relaxed some TKDN treatment for U.S. products. That could create a route for future Pixel sales, but it does not by itself prove that Google Pixel has received Indonesian certification, that every Pixel model is eligible, or that Google has begun official Indonesian retail sales.
The careful conclusion is: the agreement may make future official Pixel sales more possible, but it is not proof that Pixel phones are currently authorized for Indonesian retail.

What buyers should check before importing a Pixel
- IMEI status: Confirm whether the exact device can legally access Indonesian cellular networks.
- Model and bands: Check the precise regional model against the buyer’s Indonesian carrier bands.
- Warranty: Ask whether repairs, replacement and warranty claims are available in Indonesia or require overseas service.
- Features: Region restrictions may affect eSIM, 5G, call-screening, recording, satellite and other functions.
- Landed cost: Include taxes, customs charges, shipping, reseller margin and possible registration costs—not just the advertised price.
- Seller reliability: Require an invoice, written return policy and clear explanation of IMEI status. Treat “official” claims skeptically unless supported by a recognized certification or official local channel.
- Repairs and resale: Check parts availability and whether future buyers will accept a device with uncertain warranty or network status.
Do not pay a service that claims to bypass IMEI controls or guarantee an “unblock” without a lawful, verifiable process.
Why officially distributed alternatives may be safer financially
Samsung and Xiaomi were cited in contemporaneous coverage as having established manufacturing operations in Indonesia. Officially distributed models from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO or vivo may offer more predictable local warranty, repair, carrier, financing and IMEI support.
That does not mean they reproduce Pixel’s camera processing, clean Android interface or Google-exclusive features. The trade-off is between Pixel-specific features and the lower administrative and ownership risk of a phone supported through Indonesian channels.
