Indian Watchmaker Titan’s TEAL Bets on Customized Manufacturing Lines

Titan Engineering and Automation Limited (TEAL) combines co-developed turnkey automation lines with precision manufacturing. Here’s what its 2025 reporting says about its process, sourcing and opportunities.

Titan Engineering and Automation Limited (TEAL), an engineering business rooted in Titan’s watchmaking legacy, builds customer-specific automation lines as well as precision-manufactured components. Its automation approach starts with a customer’s engineering, manufacturing and maintenance teams defining what a new product needs; TEAL then co-develops the line before procurement. The scale and figures below reflect a June 2025 interview, not independently audited or necessarily current company data.

What does TEAL make?

TEAL has two related but distinct activities: turnkey industrial automation systems and high-precision manufacturing services. The automation business designs and integrates equipment for production applications such as mobile-device assembly and vehicle electronics. Those automotive applications include motor controllers, battery-management systems and onboard chargers. EE Times’ June 2025 profile describes the company’s work across electronics, automotive, aerospace and defense applications.

Its precision-manufacturing work is not the same thing as building an automation line. One example is a Safran Aircraft Engines contract announced in February 2025 for LEAP engine low-pressure turbine components. Production was expected to begin in 2026; the available reporting does not confirm that production has started. EE Times and TEAL’s news index provide the dated context.

How does TEAL customize a manufacturing line?

Customization begins before equipment is ordered. TEAL managing director Sridhar Neelakantan told EE Times that the customer’s design, manufacturing and maintenance teams come together to define requirements when launching a product, and TEAL co-develops the line with them before procurement is discussed. That sequence is intended to shape the system around the product and production requirements rather than begin with a standard machine choice.

Titan Black Dial Analog Watch with Date Function for Men
  • Dial Color: Black, Case Shape: Round, Dial Glass Material: Mineral
  • Band Color: Silver, Band Material: Metal
  • Watch Movement Type: Quartz, Watch Display Type: Analog
  • Case Material: Brass, Case Diameter: 49.3 millimeters
  • Water Resistance Depth: 50 meters, Push Button Clasp

Neelakantan described the delivery model as turnkey: “We give a complete turnkey solution, build the whole line, test it here, and then take it to the customer.” The interview describes TEAL performing design, fabrication, integration, testing and assembly in India. Service support, training, retrofits and maintenance arrangements vary according to customer preference, rather than being a single universal package. EE Times’ interview details the co-development approach.

Technology in the lines

The interview lists robotics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, servo systems, pneumatics and hydraulics among the components used in automation systems. It also describes TEAL’s Industry 4.0 platform, I4 Metrics, and deep-learning vision systems. These are reported company capabilities; the article does not provide independent performance tests, technical specifications or comparative results.

What do the reported scale and costs indicate?

In the June 2025 interview, Neelakantan estimated that a TEAL project typically costs ₹700 million to ₹1 billion. EE Times also reported that TEAL had more than 700 engineers at the time. These are interview-era figures attributed to company management, not audited statistics or confirmed current totals. EE Times’ report is the source for the project estimate and workforce figure.

The same report described three automation facilities and one aerospace manufacturing facility in Hosur, plus one EMS facility in Chennai; facilities were being expanded at the time. These locations and expansion plans should be understood as reported in 2025, not as a verified 2026 footprint.

How much of the work and sourcing is local?

Neelakantan said TEAL carries out design, fabrication, integration and testing locally, while obtaining some materials and components from international suppliers. He estimated that around 25–30% of material was imported. He also described using domestic suppliers for non-critical parts, outsourcing special processes such as chemical treatments only with customer approval, and facing tighter outsourcing limits on some aerospace work. These are his descriptions of TEAL’s practices in the 2025 interview, not independently audited supply-chain measurements. EE Times’ sourcing coverage reports those estimates and practices.

This distinction matters when assessing a custom line: locally performed engineering and integration do not mean every component is locally sourced. For buyers, the practical questions include which parts and processes are imported, what customer approval is required for subcontracting, and what support is available if a sourced component needs replacement.

What opportunities is TEAL pursuing?

In 2025, Neelakantan identified outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT)—including packaging, assembly and wafer handling—and solar wafer and panel production as opportunity areas. The interview presents these as sectors TEAL was pursuing, not as confirmed contracts or completed projects. EE Times’ account provides that qualification.

Neelakantan also called the moment “an inflection point for India as far as manufacturing is concerned.” That is an executive’s outlook, not an independently established measure of the country’s manufacturing trajectory.

What should a buyer compare when evaluating a custom automation supplier?

TEAL’s reported model suggests a practical set of questions for any capital-intensive automation purchase. The interview does not independently rank TEAL against competitors, so these are evaluation criteria rather than a verdict on which supplier is best.

  • Co-engineering: Do the supplier’s engineers work with design, manufacturing and maintenance teams before the system is specified and purchased?
  • Scope: Does the proposal cover design, fabrication, integration, testing, delivery and installation, and state clearly what is excluded?
  • Support: Are training, maintenance, local service and future retrofits included, optional or separately arranged?
  • Product experience: Has the supplier worked with comparable products and production changes, rather than only similar equipment?
  • Sourcing and lifecycle exposure: Which components or processes depend on imports or subcontractors, and how could lead times, logistics or downtime affect operations?
  • Total cost: Compare the upfront investment with expected maintenance, output interruptions and the cost of adapting the line—not just the purchase price.
