Yes. The UPI–NPI person-to-person remittance service launched on June 6, 2026, connecting India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI). It allows eligible users to send money through participating banks and payment apps, but availability, eligibility, limits and fees differ by direction and provider.

What the UPI–NPI launch means

The Government of India says the cross-border remittance mechanism began on June 6, 2026. Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) published its launch announcement on June 9, and the Government of India posted its announcement on June 11. The integration was carried out by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of India’s National Payments Corporation of India, and NCHL, Nepal’s primary payments facilitator. The service is designed for real-time person-to-person transfers through mobile banking apps and digital wallets.

The operational details below reflect NCHL’s service page as available in 2026. Provider participation and published terms can change, so check the current listing and the sending app’s terms before initiating a transfer.

Who can send money in each direction

India to Nepal

Indian and Nepali citizens can use this direction through participating Indian bank apps or non-bank third-party app providers (TPAPs), subject to each provider’s availability rules. NCHL says both sender and recipient must give one-time consent for cross-border transfers. A recipient can be identified by mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA).

Nepal to India

NCHL specifies that the sender must be an Indian citizen who maintains an account with a participating member bank in Nepal. Sending channels include the bank’s mobile app, connectIPS, and account-linked payment service provider (PSP) apps. The recipient is addressed using a UPI ID on the Indian side.

How to make a transfer

The precise screens vary by provider, but NCHL’s published process for a Nepal-origin transfer is:

3 Pack Surcharge Fee Payment Sign - 3% Fee, Credit Card Logos, Contactless Icon, No Fee For Cash Or Debit, Business Payment Signs Service and Retail
  • CLEAR PAYMENT NOTICE: Clearly informs customers of a 3% credit card surcharge while noting no fee for cash or debit payments, helping avoid confusion at checkout.

  1. Check that your provider is enabled. Confirm that your Nepal bank or app supports the required direction; a provider may be listed but enabled only for receiving.
  2. Enable cross-border transfers. Complete the one-time consent or activation requested by the app for you and, where applicable, the recipient.
  3. Enter the beneficiary and amount. For a Nepal-to-India transfer, provide the recipient’s UPI ID and enter the amount in Nepalese rupees.
  4. Review the displayed conversion. Check the Indian-rupee equivalent and any charges shown by the app before proceeding.
  5. Authorize the payment. Confirm with the transaction PIN and/or OTP requested by your provider.

For India-to-Nepal transfers, use a participating bank app or TPAP and the recipient’s mobile number or VPA as supported by that app. Follow its confirmation and authorization steps; the available sources do not establish one universal screen sequence across providers.

Published limits and fees

NCHL’s 2026 service page publishes different limits for the two directions. These are operator-published ceilings, not a guarantee that every bank or app permits the maximum. Check the current app or bank terms before sending.

Direction Published maximum Published fee
Nepal to India INR 15,000 per transaction; INR 100,000 per month NPR 240 per transaction
India to Nepal INR 200,000 per transaction; NCHL’s table does not state a monthly cap Check with the relevant bank or app; NCHL does not publish one common India-side fee

The sources do not provide a consolidated India-side exchange-rate or fee schedule. Review the conversion rate and all charges presented by your provider; the published information does not establish that the India-to-Nepal service is free or what every sender will pay in total.

Participating banks and apps

NCHL’s service page lists the following providers in 2026. The list is subject to change, and a listed provider may not be enabled for both sending and receiving.

How this differs from UPI QR payments in Nepal

UPI QR payments in Nepal are a separate merchant-payment service: Indian consumers can scan QR codes on the Fonepay network to pay participating merchants. NPCI International announced that person-to-merchant rollout on March 8, 2024. The 2026 UPI–NPI launch adds a person-to-person remittance connection; paying a shop by QR is not the same as sending money to an individual.

How the new linkage differs from the RBI’s older remittance facility

The Reserve Bank of India’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) is a separate, India-to-Nepal route based on NEFT. It was launched in May 2008 and updated in August 2021. The table summarizes the distinction; terms for INRF below are from the RBI FAQ updated September 27, 2023, while UPI–NPI limits and fees are those NCHL published in 2026.

Feature UPI–NPI linkage RBI Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility
Direction India to Nepal and Nepal to India India to Nepal
Eligibility and channel Participating bank/payment apps; Nepal-to-India requires an Indian citizen with an account at a participating member bank in Nepal Sender with an account at an NEFT-enabled Indian bank branch; walk-in/non-customers can also send under separate limits
Identifiers and delivery Mobile number or VPA for India-to-Nepal; UPI ID for Nepal-to-India NEFT-based route that pools through SBI in India and is handled in Nepal by Nepal SBI Ltd. (NSBL); cash delivery through an authorized money-transfer company is possible in specified cases
Published limits India to Nepal: up to INR 200,000 per transaction; Nepal to India: up to INR 15,000 per transaction and INR 100,000 per month (NCHL, 2026) Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction for an account-holding sender; walk-in/non-customers up to ₹50,000 per transaction and 12 remittances per year (RBI FAQ, updated September 27, 2023)
Fees NCHL lists NPR 240 per Nepal-to-India transfer; India-side fees are provider-specific RBI publishes scheme-specific fees; those charges do not apply to UPI–NPI

These routes should not be treated as interchangeable: their eligibility, channel, delivery method, and fee arrangements differ. The available published information is not enough for a like-for-like cost comparison between UPI–NPI providers and INRF.
