India generated 141.53 million e-way bills in September 2026, a 7.2% increase from September 2025 and 1.8% more than in August. Mint reported the figures from government data; the September monthly total was the highest reported so far in fiscal year 2027.
How September compared with earlier months
The September count was up from 139.09 million in August. The monthly increase came after a brief dip: Mint reported 139.79 million bills in July and 139.09 million in August. Earlier fiscal-year totals were 133.37 million in April, 136.08 million in May and 136.77 million in June.

Year-over-year growth, however, was slightly slower than in August. Mint reported a 7.7% annual increase for August, compared with September’s 7.2%.

Interstate generation therefore had the faster percentage growth, both year over year and month over month. Intrastate bills remained the larger share of the September total.
What an e-way bill records
An e-way bill is an electronic document for a specified consignment or movement of goods under India’s GST system. The GSTN FAQ describes the general threshold as goods valued above ₹50,000, subject to applicable rules and exemptions. Depending on the circumstances, the consignor, consignee or transporter may generate the bill.

The National Informatics Centre’s e-way bill system supports interstate and intrastate movement. Its listed generation methods include the web portal, bulk upload, SMS, mobile app and API.

Mint presented the increase as a sign of goods movement picking up ahead of India’s festive season. That is a possible context, not proof that the season caused the rise. A monthly bill count alone does not establish why activity changed.

Nor is the total a direct measure of economic growth, shipment value, GDP or tax collections. E-way bills count electronic permits generated under applicable GST rules; they are best read as one indicator of goods movement and related activity. Pankaj Dikshit, executive director and chief AI and data officer at Cygnet.One, told Mint: “The stronger growth in interstate e-way bills is also consistent with continued movement of goods across state borders, although e-way bill volumes should be read as an indicator of activity rather than a direct measure of economic growth.”
The September total and comparisons here are attributed to Mint’s 8 October 2026 report of government data. The official system and FAQ explain how e-way bills work, but do not independently verify the September monthly total.
