It was marketed as a subscription-based forex and trading education business with a multi-level marketing (MLM) referral structure. The brand later became known as IM Academy. That distinction matters: paying for access to courses, signals, online meetings or a trading community is not the same as placing money with an FCA-, ASIC- or SEC-regulated broker.
My verdict is that prospective customers should treat iMarketsLive/IM Academy as a high-risk MLM trading-education scheme, not a legitimate broker. That does not automatically prove that every person associated with it is committing fraud. It does mean that the business model, income marketing and trading-risk claims deserve substantial scepticism—and that anyone asking you to send investment money directly to them should be treated as a potential scam.
What was iMarketsLive?
iMarketsLive, commonly shortened to IML, promoted access to online education and tools for markets including forex and cryptocurrencies. Customers generally paid recurring membership fees for educational material, webinars, chatrooms, market commentary and related services.
The business also used a network-marketing structure. Members could introduce other people and potentially receive commissions or bonuses based on sales and, depending on the plan, activity within their downline. As a result, some promotional conversations focused as much on recruiting new members and building a team as on learning to trade.

That is materially different from a normal investment platform. A broker executes orders and holds client assets under its own regulated legal entity. An education company sells access to content or services. iMarketsLive’s customers were not simply opening a standard investment account with a regulated stockbroker.
Is iMarketsLive a broker?
No—not in the ordinary meaning of the word. iMarketsLive was primarily an education, software and membership business. The service did not turn a subscription into a protected brokerage account, and joining did not make a customer a professional trader.

Why do people call iMarketsLive a scam?
Several features can lead people to use that label:
- Income-focused marketing: social-media presentations may show luxury lifestyles, cars, travel or screenshots of profitable trades without showing the full loss history or expenses.
- Recruitment incentives: members may be encouraged to sell the opportunity to friends and family or recruit a team.
- Trading losses: leveraged forex and cryptocurrency trading can produce rapid losses, especially for inexperienced customers.
- Recurring charges: a member may continue paying for access even when they rarely use the material or are not making money.
- Confusion between education and investing: a course provider can use trading terminology without being authorised to manage money or provide regulated investment advice.
These warning signs do not by themselves establish that every course, educator or member is fraudulent. They do show why the “become financially free by joining our team” pitch should not be assessed like a standard broker review.

The key difference between a membership fee and an investment deposit
A membership fee pays for a service. It can be poor value, difficult to cancel or marketed aggressively, but it is not normally covered by investment compensation schemes merely because the service discusses financial markets.
An investment deposit is money sent to a firm to trade or hold on your behalf. That activity normally requires authorisation in the relevant country. If someone tells you to transfer money to them so they can trade for you, check the firm on the regulator’s official register before sending anything.
Do not assume that a trading app, a MetaTrader login or a company registration proves authorisation. A company can be registered as a business without being authorised to provide financial services.
How to check an iMarketsLive-related offer
- Identify the legal entity. Ask for the full company name, registration number, registered address, regulator and licence number. A first name, brand name or Telegram username is not enough.
- Search the regulator directly. For a UK offer, use the FCA Financial Services Register and the FCA’s warning list. For the United States, check the NFA BASIC database and CFTC consumer alerts. For other countries, use the local regulator’s own site.
- Match every detail. Clone operators can copy a legitimate firm’s name, address or authorisation number. Compare the website domain, phone number, email address and legal entity with the register.
- Trace the payment. Be especially cautious if payment is requested in cryptocurrency, to a personal bank account, through a payment app, or to a different company from the one named in the contract.
- Read the cancellation terms before joining. Record the price, billing interval, renewal date, refund conditions and the exact steps for cancellation. Take screenshots of the checkout page.
- Ignore guaranteed-return claims. No honest trading educator can guarantee profits from forex, crypto or any leveraged product.
What are the main financial risks?
Forex leverage
Leverage allows a trader to control a larger position with a smaller deposit. It magnifies losses as well as gains. A small adverse price move can consume a large portion of the account, and volatile markets can move through stop-loss levels at a worse price than expected.

Signal dependence
A signal is not a guarantee or a substitute for understanding position size, spread, slippage, margin and the underlying market. A screenshot showing a winning trade says nothing about losing trades, deleted trades, fees or the size of the account.
Subscription and recruitment costs
A member can lose money in two separate ways: by paying membership or event costs and by trading. If they also spend money advertising, travelling to events or buying promotional material, the break-even point becomes higher still.
Cryptocurrency and wallet risk
Crypto transfers are often difficult or impossible to reverse. Never connect a wallet or disclose a seed phrase because a recruiter says it is required to activate an account. No legitimate support representative needs your private key or recovery phrase.
Does the MLM structure make it illegal?
No. Multi-level marketing is not automatically illegal. The important question is whether revenue comes primarily from genuine sales to retail customers who want the service, or from recruiting participants who pay to join and then recruit others.

A recruitment-heavy structure can become a pyramid-style operation if the main economic activity is enrolling new members rather than selling a valuable product to ordinary customers. Determining that legally requires examining the actual compensation plan and conduct, not just the company’s label.
For a consumer, the practical warning is simpler: if the presentation emphasises recruiting, “team volume” and lifestyle rewards more than the price and quality of the education, do not treat it as a normal route into investing.
Red flags that indicate an immediate scam
- A person claims to be an iMarketsLive or IM Academy broker and asks you to send funds for managed trading.
- You are promised a fixed monthly return, guaranteed profit or no-risk strategy.
- You are pressured to pay today to qualify for a lower membership tier or exclusive opportunity.
- Withdrawal requires an additional “tax”, “verification fee” or “release charge”.
- A supposed recovery agent contacts you after you have lost money and requests an upfront payment.
- The contact refuses to provide a legal entity or tells you that regulation is unnecessary because the service is “only education”.
- You are asked for your banking password, one-time security code, private crypto key or wallet seed phrase.
If you have already paid
- Cancel the membership and recurring card payment through the provider and, if necessary, your bank. Keep confirmation emails and screenshots.
- Contact your bank or card issuer promptly. Explain whether the payment was unauthorised, misrepresented or part of an investment scam. Card-payment rules differ, so do not assume a refund is automatic.
- Do not send more money to unlock a withdrawal or recover the original payment.
- Change passwords reused on the website and enable two-factor authentication on email, banking and crypto accounts.
- Report suspected fraud to the relevant national reporting service and regulator. In the UK, that generally means Action Fraud, the FCA and your bank; in the US, the FTC, CFTC or relevant state authority may be appropriate.
- Save the contract, invoices, chats, usernames, wallet addresses, transaction IDs and promotional videos. Evidence is more useful when preserved before accounts or messages disappear.
