Date status (8 October 2026): The January 2024 re-registration cycle is closed. It opened on 5 December 2023, and its deadline was extended to 15 February 2024. IGNOU’s live portal now shows the July 2026 cycle, whose 30 September 2026 deadline has also passed. Check the IGNOU re-registration portal and IGNOU announcements for the next cycle; do not use the January 2024 dates to plan a current application.

IGNOU January 2024 re-registration last date

IGNOU opened January 2024 re-registration on 5 December 2023. The initial deadline was 29 January 2024, but IGNOU extended it to 15 February 2024, according to contemporaneous reporting by The Indian Express. A Chennai regional-centre welcome letter had earlier anticipated an October/November 2023 opening; that was advance guidance, not the actual opening date.

The current portal is for a later session. Its displayed July 2026 cycle had a 30 September 2026 deadline with a ₹200 late fee; that date has passed as of 8 October 2026. Session dates and fees change, so consult the live portal and IGNOU announcements for the next available cycle.

How to apply for IGNOU re-registration online

For the January 2024 process, IGNOU’s official FAQ described these steps. Portal labels and available payment options can change between sessions, so follow the instructions shown for the cycle you are applying to.

  1. Open the IGNOU online re-registration system and register using your details. The system sends credentials by SMS and email.
  2. Log in with the credentials and complete the re-registration form, selecting the courses you intend to take. Check the programme guidance before making course selections.
  3. Accept the declaration, preview the form, and confirm that the displayed details and course choices are correct.
  4. Pay through an option available on the portal and submit the form.
  5. Save or print the submitted form and payment confirmation for your records.

The portal advises applicants not to wait until the last date to submit a form. This is current portal guidance, not a statement specific to the January 2024 cycle.

What details should you have ready?

IGNOU’s official re-registration FAQ says applicants should have their enrolment number, registered email address and mobile number, and intended course list ready. Use correct contact details and review the programme guidance before choosing courses.

Payment options and a payment-status issue

The FAQ lists credit card, debit card and net banking. The live portal also lists UPI, including BHIM, and provides online payment options for international learners. Available methods may vary, so use the options shown for your session.

If a payment has not updated, the portal advises waiting one day and checking the payment status before trying again. Checking first can help avoid making a duplicate payment.

Who qualified for the January 2024 SC/ST fee exemption?

IGNOU Notification No. 59, dated 12 December 2023, stated that SC/ST students who had received fee exemption or reimbursement at fresh admission were eligible for fee exemption while re-registering in January 2024. This was a limited, cycle-specific provision, not a general waiver for all SC/ST students or all re-registration sessions. See the dated IGNOU notification for its terms.
