But that does not authenticate every website, message, caller or payment request using the IG name. Before opening an account or sending money, verify the exact legal entity, its permission for the service you want, and its contact details on the regulator’s official record.
IG says its UK regulated entities include IG Markets Limited, IG Index Limited and IG Trading and Investments Limited. The entity and protections that apply depend on your location and account. The FCA says using an authorised firm with the correct permissions will greatly reduce the risk of harm, but will not remove all risk.
Is IG a regulated broker?
Yes. IG Group’s disclosures identify regulated entities in multiple jurisdictions. In the UK, IG names IG Markets Limited, IG Index Limited and IG Trading and Investments Limited as FCA-regulated entities. IG Group Holdings plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker IGG.
Do not rely solely on the IG logo or a regulatory number displayed on a website. Use the FCA Firm Checker guidance and the official register to check:

- the exact legal name of the firm;
- whether its authorisation is current;
- whether it has permission for the service being offered;
- the firm’s genuine website and contact details; and
- whether the firm is a clone of an authorised business.
Compare the official record’s contact details with the website, phone number, email address and payment instructions you were given. A scammer can copy a genuine firm’s name, address and FCA reference number, so matching the number alone is not enough. Readers outside the UK should check the relevant local regulator’s register and the legal entity named in their account paperwork. IG’s regulatory disclosures describe its group entities, but are not a substitute for checking a live regulator record.
What does IG actually offer?
IG is often described as a broker, but its products have very different risk profiles:
| Product | What it involves | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Share dealing | Buying and selling shares or exchange-traded investments | The investment can fall in value; fees and foreign-exchange costs may also apply |
| Stocks and Shares ISA | A tax-advantaged account for eligible investments | Market losses still apply, and the available investments and charges depend on the current account terms |
| CFDs | A leveraged contract based on the price of an asset without owning it | Losses can be rapid and substantial; leverage magnifies both gains and losses |
| Spread betting | A leveraged bet on whether a market rises or falls | You can lose money quickly, particularly when markets move sharply |
| Forex and other leveraged products | Trading currencies, indices, commodities or other markets | Volatility, leverage, financing charges and gaps between trading sessions |
A legitimate broker can still be unsuitable for a particular investor. Share dealing and leveraged trading should not be treated as the same service. IG’s UK risk disclosure says 70% of retail investor accounts lose money trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. This figure applies to those named products and this provider’s disclosure; it is not a rate for every IG entity or service. Check the current IG UK risk disclosure before making a decision. Someone promising guaranteed returns from “IG forex signals” or “risk-free CFDs” is offering a warning sign, not proof of IG’s normal service.
How to tell whether an IG website or message is genuine
Use this process before opening an account or transferring money:
Recommended Free Tools
- Start from an independently verified source. Use the official regulator record or IG’s verified company disclosures rather than clicking a sponsored search result, social-media advert or link sent by an unknown person.
- Inspect the domain carefully. Look for misspellings, extra words, unusual country domains and substitutions such as hyphens or added numbers. A padlock only shows that the connection is encrypted; it does not prove that the website belongs to IG.
- Check the firm and its permissions. Use the FCA Firm Checker or Financial Services Register and confirm that the legal entity is authorised for the particular product or service.
- Compare contact details. Match the website, email, phone number and other details with those on the regulator’s official record. Do not rely on details supplied by the person who contacted you.
- Check the payment destination. Be suspicious if you are asked to pay an individual, a cryptocurrency wallet, an overseas account or a bank account whose name does not correspond with the relevant IG entity.
- Stop if someone demands urgency. Time pressure, easy-money promises and guaranteed returns are warning signs. Do not send funds to secure a supposed guaranteed allocation.
The FCA warns that online trading scammers may use social-media promotions, fake celebrity endorsements and credible-looking websites. IG does not need a customer to install remote-access software so an alleged adviser can “help” with a deposit or trade. Never disclose a password, one-time code or full security credentials to a caller.

Common IG impersonation scams
Fraudsters may use a familiar broker’s name in several ways:
- Clone websites: pages that reproduce IG’s branding and claim to offer a special account or unusually high returns.
- Fake employees: messages from a person using a real employee’s name and photograph.
- Social-media investment groups: accounts promising signals, managed trading or insider opportunities.
- Recovery scams: a second fraudster claims they can recover money lost to a fake IG account, provided you pay an upfront fee.
- Fake support calls: a caller asks for a verification code or remote access to resolve a supposed account problem.
An unsolicited approach is not proof of fraud, but it changes the burden of proof. Close the conversation and contact IG through an independently obtained channel.
How customer money and investments are protected
For regulated UK investment services, client money and assets are generally subject to rules designed to keep them separate from the firm’s own money. Investments are normally held through nominee or custody arrangements rather than in the broker’s own trading account. This structure is intended to help return client assets if the firm fails.
These arrangements are not a guarantee against investment losses. If you buy a share and its price falls, segregation does not compensate you. If you trade a CFD or spread bet and lose because of leverage, that is a trading loss, not a platform failure.
FSCS protection: the important distinction
Eligible UK investment services may fall within the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), subject to the rules applying to the relevant entity, product and failure. The commonly quoted investment-compensation limit is £85,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. Deposit protection has separate rules and limits.
Rank #3
FSCS protection is not:
- insurance against a falling share price;
- protection for poor trading decisions;
- a guarantee that a CFD strategy will make money;
- a remedy for every dispute with a broker; or
- automatic protection for money sent to an unauthorised clone firm.
Before relying on compensation, identify the legal entity holding the money and check the current FSCS and FCA information. Different IG services may be provided by different group companies and may not have identical protections.
IG’s main risks and disadvantages
Leverage can produce fast losses
CFDs, spread bets and leveraged forex are complex products. A small market movement can have a much larger effect on the money committed to a position. Stop-loss orders can limit risk in some circumstances, but they are not an absolute guarantee of the execution price: markets can gap, liquidity can disappear and prices can move beyond the selected level.

Costs are more complicated than a headline commission
Depending on the product, the overall cost may include a dealing commission, spread, overnight or funding charges, an inactivity charge, currency conversion, market-data fees or other account-specific charges. The applicable schedule can change, so check the current IG fee page for the exact account and market before trading.
Execution is not guaranteed at the displayed price
Online quotes can change while an order is being submitted. During news events or fast markets, spreads may widen and an order may fill at a different price. A displayed price is not the same as a guaranteed execution price unless the product and order type expressly provide that protection.
It is primarily an execution platform, not a personal adviser
IG provides research, market information and trading tools, but that does not mean a message from an “IG analyst” is personal financial advice. A customer remains responsible for deciding whether an investment or trade is appropriate.

What to do if you have already sent money to an IG impersonator
- Stop communicating with the scammer and do not pay a recovery fee.
- Contact your bank or card provider immediately and ask whether the payment can be recalled or disputed.
- Change any password that may have been disclosed, especially if it was reused elsewhere.
- Enable multi-factor authentication and review recent account activity.
- Report the fraud to the relevant UK fraud-reporting service and notify the FCA if the firm was presenting itself as an authorised broker.
- Contact genuine IG support using details from the official website, explaining that an impersonator may have used the IG name.
If you installed remote-access software, remove it, run a security scan and consider contacting your bank from a different device. A genuine IG representative will not ask you to conceal the incident or send additional money to unlock a withdrawal.
How to complain about the real IG
If your complaint concerns a genuine IG account, use the complaints procedure published on IG’s official website. Keep order confirmations, account statements, screenshots, dates, telephone records and copies of messages. Ask the firm to confirm which legal entity handled the service.
If the complaint is not resolved, eligible customers may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service after the firm has had the opportunity to investigate. The ombudsman route concerns an actual regulated service or firm; it does not turn a payment to a fake website into a genuine IG transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: is IG a scam or legit?
IG is an established financial-services group with UK entities regulated by the FCA. Its legitimacy does not remove the normal risks of investing, and it certainly does not make leveraged products low risk.
The key question is not simply “Does IG exist?” It is “Am I dealing with the real, authorised IG entity, with permission for this service, through genuine contact and payment channels?” Verify those details independently, avoid guaranteed-return offers and treat unsolicited WhatsApp or social-media approaches as potential impersonation scams.

FAQ
Is IG a legitimate broker in the UK?
IG is an established group with UK entities identified as FCA-regulated. Check the specific legal entity and its permission for the service on the FCA’s official register before opening an account.
How do I know if an IG website is real?
Compare its domain and contact details with the current regulator record for the relevant legal entity. Do not rely on a logo, a search ad, screenshots of account gains or a regulatory number alone.
Can I lose money trading IG spread bets or CFDs?
Yes. These are leveraged products and can cause rapid losses. IG’s UK risk disclosure says 70% of retail investor accounts lose money trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider; check its current notice for the applicable disclosure.
Does IG regulation mean my money or trades are safe?
No. Authorisation with the correct permissions reduces the risk of harm but does not remove all risk, as the FCA explains. Regulation does not prevent market losses, poor trading outcomes or impersonation scams.
How do I check whether someone who contacted me is really from IG?
End the unsolicited conversation and contact IG using details independently checked against the regulator’s official record. Do not use a phone number, email address or reference number supplied by the person who contacted you.
What should I do if I paid a fake IG website?
Contact your bank or card provider immediately, stop sending money, change exposed passwords, secure your devices and report the fraud. Do not pay a second company promising to recover your funds for an upfront fee.
