IDC’s preliminary estimate published April 27, 2023, put worldwide smartphone shipments at 268.6 million units in the first quarter of 2023, down 14.6% from a year earlier. It was the market’s seventh consecutive quarterly year-over-year decline. The figure describes devices shipped into the sales channel—not a direct count of phones bought by consumers—and is a historical result, not the latest market reading. IDC’s Q1 2023 estimate
What the 14.6% figure measured
IDC compared worldwide smartphone shipments in Q1 2023 with shipments in Q1 2022. Its preliminary estimate was 268.6 million devices, a steeper decline than the 12.7% drop IDC had previously forecast. The result marked seven consecutive quarters in which global shipments were lower than in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. IDC’s Q1 2023 estimate

Shipments measure phones sent by manufacturers into distribution channels. They are useful for tracking supply and the flow of new devices to market, but they are not the same as retail purchases, or “sell-through.” Phones already held by distributors and retailers can affect shipments even when consumers continue buying from existing stock. The unit figure also says nothing by itself about industry revenue: a fall in devices shipped is not necessarily an equal fall in dollars earned.

Because this was a preliminary estimate, it should be understood as IDC’s reported snapshot at the time, rather than an audited count. And because it is a worldwide average, it does not establish that shipments fell by the same amount in every country or price category.

How the major vendors compared
IDC’s vendor figures show a broad downturn, but not an equal one. Samsung remained the largest vendor by shipments, while Apple’s decline was much smaller than those of most of its top-five competitors. Vendor figures reported from IDC’s table
| Vendor | Q1 2023 shipments | Market share | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung | 60.5 million | 22.5% | -18.9% |
| Apple | 55.2 million | 20.5% | -2.3% |
| Xiaomi | 30.5 million | 11.4% | -23.5% |
| OPPO | 27.4 million | 10.2% | -6.7% |
| vivo | 20.5 million | 7.6% | -18.8% |
The five vendors together accounted for about 72.2% of shipments, based on their listed shares. The remainder was divided among smaller manufacturers. These are shipment shares, not measures of revenue or profit.

Why Apple was more resilient—not a growth story
Apple shipped 55.2 million phones, down 2.3% from the 56.5 million reported for Q1 2022. It therefore did not grow in global unit shipments. Its relative strength was that it lost far less volume than the overall market and most of the other leading vendors, which helped it defend its share of shipments.
Premium positioning, customer retention within Apple’s hardware-and-software ecosystem, and its presence in higher-end markets are plausible reasons for that resilience. They are explanations, not causes established by the shipment table. The data shows the difference in outcomes; it does not isolate why Apple’s decline was smaller.

What drove the market contraction?
IDC pointed to subdued consumer demand, inflation, wider economic uncertainty, and elevated inventory in distribution channels. When vendors and retailers have more stock than they expect to sell, manufacturers may cut shipments and use promotions to move existing inventory. That adjustment can make shipments fall faster than consumer purchases in a given quarter.
Longer replacement cycles may also contribute: consumers can keep a working phone for longer when new models offer less urgency to upgrade or budgets are under pressure. The available figures do not quantify how much each factor contributed, so no single cause should be treated as the explanation for the entire decline.

How to read the Android comparison
Apple’s 20.5% share means vendors other than Apple accounted for roughly 79.5% of reported shipments. Most of those devices were Android phones, but that arithmetic is not an exact operating-system market-share statistic: vendor portfolios and IDC’s classification methods are not identical to a direct OS count. The defensible conclusion is that the shipment downturn affected a market in which Android vendors supplied the large majority of devices, while Apple’s shipments held up comparatively well.

Contemporaneous coverage cited Canalys’ estimate of an approximately 13% decline for Q1 2023, compared with IDC’s 14.6%. Market trackers can arrive at different estimates because their databases, regional and vendor coverage, classification rules, and preliminary or revised data may differ. The available figures establish a difference in estimates, not a contradiction; a precise reconciliation would require comparing the trackers’ underlying methodologies.

What IDC expected in April 2023
At the time, IDC described the market as going through an inventory-clearing and adjustment period. It expected the next three to six months to remain difficult, while suggesting conditions might improve in Q3 2023 and growth could strengthen by the holiday quarter. That was a forecast made in April 2023, not a guarantee or proof of what followed. IDC’s Q1 2023 outlook
What happened later—and what the figure does not prove
IDC’s historical market page reports that worldwide smartphone shipments in Q1 2026 were 293.8 million, down 2.9% year over year. That later result places the sharp Q1 2023 contraction in a longer market cycle; it does not make the 2023 estimate a current measure of conditions. IDC’s smartphone market-share data
Quick Recap
- The 14.6% figure establishes a steep decline in worldwide shipments in Q1 2023 compared with Q1 2022.
- It does not show that consumers bought 14.6% fewer phones, since retail purchases and channel stock are different measures.
- It does not establish a matching decline in revenue, a permanent collapse in demand, or the same result in every national market.
- It does not mean Apple’s global unit shipments grew; they fell, but less than those of its major rivals.
