Amazon Flex is block-based delivery work using a driver’s own vehicle, and the app directs much of the pickup and delivery process.
What the first delivery felt like
The article’s indexed account opens with uncertainty: the driver was nervous on an early delivery and worried about handling a very large, heavy parcel. The app then indicated that no recipient was needed. That detail captures one practical feature of the work: delivery instructions and required outcomes are presented stop by stop in the app, rather than every package requiring a handoff to a person.
The account also says the author later found the Flex experience markedly different. The available account does not establish the author’s route, delivery count, schedule, earnings, or exactly what made the later experience different, so those details should not be inferred.
What Amazon Flex work involves
Amazon says Flex began in 2015. Flex partners use their own vehicles and select available delivery blocks in the app; the app shows a block’s pay before a driver accepts it. Blocks may be scheduled ahead or picked up as same-day opportunities, depending on availability. Amazon describes partners as independent contractors. From station pickup to delivery
Amazon’s FAQ describes a work sequence that starts at a delivery station and continues through the app:
- Check in at the station and scan the route or cart and the packages assigned to it.
- Load the packages into your vehicle.
- Follow the itinerary and navigation in the Flex app, or switch to an installed third-party mapping app.
- Record each delivery outcome in the app.
- Return packages that could not be delivered, following the app’s instructions.
The app is therefore central to the job: it organizes the route and captures delivery results. Amazon says its safety features include the option not to complete a delivery if the driver feels unsafe. Amazon Flex FAQ Amazon’s Flex overview

Flex is not the same job as a DSP delivery route
“Amazon delivery driver” can describe different arrangements. Flex is block-based work using a personal vehicle. Amazon’s separate account of a delivery service partner (DSP) driver describes a van-based station route. Its details should not be read as conditions for Flex partners.

What Amazon says drivers can earn—and what that number leaves out
Amazon’s current program overview, accessed in 2026, says most delivery partners make $18–$25 per hour, depending on location and other factors. Amazon’s hiring page also identifies location, tips, and time required as factors affecting actual earnings. For a personal-finance decision, distinguish the amount shown for a block or an advertised hourly range from what remains after costs. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2021 complaint discussed drivers’ responsibility for gas, insurance, repairs, and other expenses under the terms it addressed. A July 2025 report by the National Employment Law Project also examines worker costs and economic risks. Neither source provides the author’s mileage, expenses, or take-home pay. Eligibility and availability depend on location
Amazon’s U.S. hiring page lists a minimum age of 21, a valid U.S. driver’s license, and a midsize or larger vehicle. Its FAQ further specifies a four-door midsize sedan or larger, a valid Social Security number, and a current government-issued U.S. license. These are stated U.S. requirements; local onboarding rules and delivery-block availability can change. Check Amazon’s current hiring information for the area where you intend to apply. The tip controversy is historical, not a description of current practice
In a 2021 complaint, the FTC alleged that Amazon retained over $61 million in customer tips intended for Flex drivers over more than two and a half years. The complaint also reproduced historical FAQ wording attributed to Amazon: “You will receive 100% of the tips you earn while delivering with Amazon Flex.” The $61 million figure is an allegation in that complaint; it should not be treated as a current-practice claim or as an adjudicated finding on the basis of that document alone.
