I Used a Craigslist Concept Ad to Test My Business Idea—Here’s What the Response Showed

A response to a Craigslist concept ad is a signal about one offer and audience—not proof of repeat demand, willingness to pay, or a viable business model.

A Craigslist response can show that a particular offer caught someone’s attention; it cannot, on its own, prove that a business will work. The useful lesson from a concept ad is narrower: whether a defined audience took a meaningful action in response to a specific promise. To interpret that signal responsibly, separate interest from willingness to pay and from the ability to deliver profitably.

What a “fake” Craigslist ad can—and cannot—test

If “fake” means the product was a concept rather than something ready to buy, the ad tested a proposed offer under specific conditions. Its result depends on four things: who saw it, what the wording promised, what action it invited, and what you counted as a response.

A view or click is a weaker signal than a reply, appointment, or signup. A payment or paid pilot is stronger evidence of willingness to pay, though even that does not establish repeat demand or workable delivery costs. Ask whether the people who responded fit the intended customer group and whether follow-up conversations confirmed that they have the problem and genuinely want the proposed solution.

There is no universal response-rate cutoff that makes an idea validated. Compare results with the noise and expectations of the channel, then verify intent in conversation. A single encouraging reply may be useful evidence; it is not proof that enough customers can be reached consistently.

What to test next, in order

Different experiments answer different business questions. The Startup Project’s four-rung validation guide recommends matching the test to the uncertainty rather than treating all interest as demand.

Question Useful next test What it can indicate
Do customers have this problem? Problem interviews; the guide suggests 15–20 interviews as an experiment. Whether the problem is real and how people currently address it. The interview count is the guide’s recommendation, not a universal threshold or a study result.
Is there interest in this solution? A smoke test that describes the intended solution and asks for a real action, such as joining a waitlist or booking a demo. Whether the offer prompts action among the audience reached. Compare with channel noise and confirm intent in follow-up conversations.
Will customers pay? Presales or paid pilots. Evidence of willingness to pay under the offer and terms presented.
Can the business deliver sustainably? Serve early customers manually and track delivery costs. Whether the service can be delivered at a workable cost; interest alone cannot answer this.

These are practical recommendations from the guide, not controlled findings that guarantee a particular result. Choose the next test based on the unanswered question, not on which channel is easiest to post in.

How to keep a concept test honest

The Federal Trade Commission describes “dry testing” as advertising a product to assess interest before manufacturing it. The FTC says such an ad must clearly disclose that the merchandise is only planned and may never be shipped. See its Advertising FAQs for small businesses.

The FTC’s broader rule is that advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, and advertisers need evidence for their claims. Its advertising and marketing guidance also notes that specialized products and services may face additional rules. This is general information, not legal advice for a particular product or jurisdiction.

Craigslist’s prohibited-content rules bar false, misleading, deceptive, or fraudulent posts and bait and switch. They also prohibit posts primarily intended to drive traffic to a website and affiliate marketing. Its terms of use prohibit misleading postings and restrict certain automated access and collection of user information; the page says it was last updated August 16, 2019, so check the live terms before posting.

  • Say plainly if the product is planned and may never become available.
  • Do not imply that an unavailable product can be delivered now, manufacture scarcity, or misstate who you are or whom you represent.
  • Ask only for information that serves an appropriate purpose, and do not use automated interactions or collection in ways the terms prohibit.
  • Make claims you can substantiate, and check whether the exact post complies with Craigslist’s current rules.

Whether a particular post violates a platform rule depends on its content and context. If Craigslist is not a suitable channel or the proposed post is not allowed, use a test that can reach the same audience and measure the action you need without obscuring that the offer is only planned.

Choosing a better-fitting test

Compare options by the customer segment they reach, the action they measure, whether they test interest or payment, the time and cost to run, and how clearly they let you disclose the offer’s status.

  • Problem interviews: useful when you first need to establish that the problem exists, rather than pitch a solution.
  • Landing-page smoke test: useful for measuring response to a clearly described intended solution and a concrete next step such as a waitlist signup or demo booking.
  • Presales or paid pilots: useful when the unresolved question is whether people will pay on the proposed terms.
  • Manual service to early customers: useful for learning what delivery involves and tracking its costs before investing in automation or scale.

The channel is secondary to the question. A test that gets replies but never asks about payment cannot establish willingness to pay; a paid pilot cannot by itself establish repeatable acquisition or profitable delivery.
