Former CBI director M Nageswara Rao has taken charge as national president of the Sarvajan Sanatan Party (SSP), according to Hindustan Times. Party office-bearers elected him, and Rao announced his new role at a press conference in Varanasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026. He described entering active politics as a new responsibility in his public life.
What happened in Varanasi
Hindustan Times reported that SSP office-bearers elected Rao national president. He announced the role at a press conference in Varanasi and said he wanted to apply his experience for the larger interests of the nation and society. He also said his close observation of the administrative system informed his decision to take on this political responsibility.
The appointment and remarks are reported by contemporary news coverage; no primary party announcement or complete press-conference transcript is available in the cited accounts.
What Rao said about the party’s vision
Hindustan Times quoted Rao describing “Satya Sanatan, Nitya Nutan” as the foundation of his vision, not merely a slogan. He characterized Sanatan as a worldview grounded in truth, Dharma, duty, justice, compassion and public welfare, rather than only a form of worship.

He also said: “Let us build a modern India without severing ties with our roots. In our pursuit of development, we must not lose sight of our civilizational heritage. Future generations should understand and value the rich tradition they have inherited.”
Rao called Kashi the starting point of his political journey and a symbol of India’s civilizational continuity. He said he wanted to build a modern India rooted in that heritage, not return to the past. These are his stated views as reported by Hindustan Times; the coverage does not establish them as a detailed or official SSP platform.

Who is M Nageswara Rao?
Hindustan Times reports that Rao is from Warangal district in Telangana, holds a postgraduate degree in Chemistry and served in the Indian Police Service before becoming interim director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Hyderabad Mail gives a longer career account, identifying him as a 1986-batch IPS officer in the Odisha cadre. It describes his work in Odisha Police and disaster response, says he joined the CBI in 2016, and reports that he served twice as interim chief—in October 2018 and January 2019. That expanded chronology is attributed to Hyderabad Mail and is not independently confirmed here against an official biography.

What is known about the Sarvajan Sanatan Party?
The reported appointment and Rao’s remarks establish that SSP is the party he now leads as national president. The available coverage does not set out the party’s policies, electoral plans or organisational position in detail. His comments about development and civilizational heritage should therefore be read as his stated vision, not as a substitute for a published party platform.
