Conagra’s fiscal 2027 first quarter showed higher profit, but not a broad sales recovery. For the quarter ended August 30, 2026, net income rose 6.0% and adjusted EBITDA rose 2.4%, while organic net sales fell 1.1%, volume fell 2.1%, and adjusted gross margin narrowed. The company also reaffirmed a full-year forecast that calls for organic sales to decline. The figures point to early progress on earnings, not a completed turnaround.
What changed in Conagra’s latest quarter?
Conagra reported fiscal Q1 2027 results on September 30, 2026. Reported net sales fell 1.4% to $2.6 billion, while organic net sales—excluding the effects of acquisitions, divestitures and foreign currency—declined 1.1%. Within organic sales, price/mix contributed a positive 1.0%, but volume fell 2.1%. Pricing therefore softened the sales decline; it did not indicate that more units were being sold.
Profit measures moved in a better direction. Net income rose 6.0% to $174 million, or $0.36 per diluted share. Adjusted net income increased 4.3% to $197 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, and adjusted EBITDA rose 2.4% to $451 million. Adjusted results exclude specified items and are not the same as GAAP results. Conagra attributed the adjusted net income increase mainly to lower adjusted SG&A and higher equity earnings, partly offset by lower gross profit.
Those profit increases do not erase the pressure on the core cost structure. Adjusted gross profit fell 3.9% to $619 million, and adjusted gross margin was 23.8%, down 62 basis points from a year earlier. Productivity and about $4 million in tariff refunds were outweighed by lower organic sales, cost-of-goods-sold inflation and unfavorable operating leverage.

Why SG&A and brand investment tell different stories
Adjusted SG&A declined 3.7% to $321 million, partly because the comparison included a $10 million benefit from fiscal 2026 incentive compensation. At the same time, advertising and promotion (A&P) spending increased 15.1% to $61 million. The combination shows that Conagra increased a specific form of brand investment even as its total adjusted SG&A fell; the two figures are not contradictory.
Joint-venture earnings helped the bottom line
Equity-method investment earnings increased 71.8% to $50 million, primarily because of favorable market conditions and management through wheat-market volatility at Ardent Mills. Net interest expense also fell 2.1% to $92 million as debt was lower. These items helped earnings, but they are distinct from improvement in sales or gross margin across Conagra’s branded-food operations.
Are sales and profits improving across the business?
No broad-based recovery is evident in the segment results. Foodservice was the strongest segment, while the two largest consumer-facing groupings reported organic sales declines and lower segment operating profit.

| Fiscal Q1 2027 segment | Organic sales | Price/mix | Volume | Adjusted operating profit |

| Refrigerated & Frozen | Down 1.6% | Down 1.5% | Down 0.1% | Down 13.0% |

| Foodservice | Up 3.3% | Up 0.8% | Up 2.5% | Up 11.4% |
About 150 basis points of Foodservice’s volume growth reflected customer-order timing: those orders had occurred in the prior-year third quarter. That makes the reported growth less reliable as a simple indicator of recurring demand. Conagra also reported dollar-share gains in frozen vegetables, pudding, chili, frozen breakfast, hot dogs and frozen desserts. Those category-specific gains are encouraging, but they do not overturn the company-wide declines in organic sales and volume.

Fiscal 2026, which ended May 31, 2026, provides a difficult baseline. Net sales fell 2.9% to $11.3 billion, while organic sales declined 0.4%. Reported sales also reflected a 4.6% decline from M&A and a 1.8% increase from the 53rd week; those effects, alongside the organic decline, mean reported sales were not a standalone measure of underlying demand.
For fiscal 2026, adjusted gross margin was 24.0%, down 175 basis points, and adjusted operating margin was 11.3%. Adjusted EPS was $1.72. The company’s reported diluted loss per share was $4.00, primarily because of non-cash goodwill and brand impairment charges. Fourth-quarter results included $2.0 billion in goodwill and brand impairments, which Conagra said were primarily triggered by a sustained decline in its share price and market capitalization. The reported loss and adjusted earnings describe materially different things: the first includes those charges, while the adjusted measure excludes specified items.

Against that baseline, Q1’s higher adjusted net income and EBITDA are positive, but falling organic sales and gross margin show that the business has not yet demonstrated sustained improvement in demand or product-level profitability.
What is Conagra doing to fix its business?
CEO John Brase identified four priorities in the July 15, 2026, full-year results release: restoring margins, investing more behind brands and the supply chain, simplifying operations, and strengthening financial flexibility. Q1’s higher A&P spending is one visible sign of increased brand investment. The quarter’s gross-margin decline, however, shows that margin restoration remains a goal rather than an achieved result.
Financial flexibility is also a stated priority. Conagra’s board reduced the quarterly dividend to $0.175 per share, equivalent to an annualized $0.70. The reduction accompanied management’s emphasis on strengthening the company’s finances; it does not by itself establish how quickly debt or cash generation will improve.

What do guidance, cash flow and debt say about the test ahead?
On September 30, 2026, Conagra reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 guidance. The ranges are forecasts, not results already achieved.
| Fiscal 2027 measure | Conagra guidance reaffirmed September 30, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Organic net sales change | Down 3% to down 1% |
| Adjusted operating margin | 10.0% to 10.5% |
| Adjusted EPS | $1.40 to $1.50 |
The organic-sales range means management does not expect a return to organic growth in fiscal 2027. The adjusted operating-margin range has a 10.25% midpoint, below fiscal 2026’s 11.3% adjusted operating margin. This comparison is arithmetic based on the company’s forecast and reported annual result—not evidence that the lower margin has already occurred.
Cash generation is another important measure of execution. In Q1, Conagra used $4 million in operating cash, compared with $121 million generated in the year-earlier quarter. The company attributed the change primarily to lower operating profit and higher litigation payments net of recoveries. Capital expenditures were $124 million, leaving free cash flow negative $128 million for the quarter. A single quarter can be affected by timing, so it should be weighed against the full-year assumptions rather than treated as a complete cash-flow trend.

Net debt stood at $7.4 billion, with net leverage of 3.99x. Net debt was down $193 million, or 2.5%, year over year. Management’s fiscal-year assumptions, published in July, included free-cash-flow conversion above 90% and year-end net leverage near 4.0x; those are annual assumptions, not Q1 outcomes. The Q1 release subsequently reaffirmed the fiscal 2027 guidance.

The next results need to show that the profit improvement can persist while sales and operating fundamentals stabilize. Useful indicators are:
- Organic sales and volume: whether the declines narrow and eventually reverse, rather than relying mainly on price/mix.
- Adjusted gross margin: whether productivity and supply-chain improvements can offset inflation and operating leverage pressures.
- Segment breadth: whether stronger performance extends beyond Foodservice and selected categories, with attention to timing effects.
- Cash flow and leverage: whether full-year cash-generation assumptions translate into cash available to reduce debt.
- Earnings quality: whether profit growth comes increasingly from operating performance rather than helpful comparisons, lower interest expense or equity-method earnings.
Conagra’s first quarter offers a credible early sign of earnings progress, especially in adjusted net income and EBITDA. The simultaneous decline in organic sales, volume and adjusted gross margin—and guidance that still anticipates lower organic sales—makes it too soon to call the turnaround established.
