Supernal did pause work on its aircraft program during a 2025 leadership and workforce upheaval, but the company was not publicly dissolved or formally declared canceled. TechCrunch reported on September 7, 2025, that flight-program work had stopped after staff cuts and the departures of CEO Jaiwon Shin and CTO David McBride. By May 2026, Supernal said it had become a “streamlined” organization still pursuing technical development, FAA coordination and business-model work. It has not publicly reaffirmed the original 2028 commercial-flight target.
What happened to Supernal?
Hyundai Motor Group created Supernal to lead its advanced-air-mobility effort and originally targeted first commercial flights in 2028, according to its 2021 formation announcement.
The immediate crisis unfolded in 2025:
- On August 27, Supernal announced that CEO Jaiwon Shin would leave his company and Hyundai AAM roles effective August 31 and become an adviser to Hyundai Motor Group. David Rottblatt, then senior director of business development, was assigned to oversee operations as interim COO (Supernal announcement).
- On September 7, TechCrunch reported that Supernal had paused aircraft-program work after earlier staff cuts. The report also said CTO David McBride had departed, based on people familiar with the matter; Supernal had not confirmed his exit in the August announcement (TechCrunch).
- TechCrunch later reported that chief strategy officer Jaeyong Song, chief safety officer Tracy Lamb and Lina Yang, Shin’s former chief of staff, were also gone (September 26 report).
“Paused work” therefore describes a suspension or major slowdown of aircraft development, not proof that Hyundai shut Supernal’s legal entity or permanently canceled the S-A2.
What had Supernal actually flown?
At the time of the September report, Supernal had reportedly completed an initial flight of a full-scale technology demonstrator but had not yet reached its first untethered flight. A constrained or tethered test can check propulsion, control and systems behavior while the vehicle remains physically restricted. An untethered flight is a more demanding milestone, but neither is a passenger flight or FAA certification.

Supernal’s supplier announcement describes the demonstrator as a vehicle for maturing systems, building flight-test capability and developing the supply chain—not as a completed production aircraft (Supernal).
What was the S-A2?
The S-A2 was Supernal’s publicly displayed, battery-powered electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing concept for urban and regional passenger transport. Supernal described it as a five-seat-class aircraft and linked it to a 2028 commercial-service ambition (S-A2 announcement).
Several stages are easy to conflate:
- Product concept: the public S-A2 design and intended passenger role.
- Technology demonstrator: a test aircraft used to validate systems and flight characteristics.
- Conforming aircraft: an aircraft built to the configuration and standards needed for certification testing.
- Commercial service: a certified aircraft produced, operated, insured and supported by infrastructure and customers.
A concept reveal or demonstrator flight does not establish that a certifiable aircraft is ready for airline or air-taxi operations.

What happened to the 2028 target?
In September 2025, Supernal told TechCrunch that its new leadership would assess the optimal timeline. That placed the 2028 date under review rather than confirming it.

It did not restore a public launch date (Supernal). As of August 18, 2026, the company’s newsroom contained no verified announcement reinstating the original schedule or documenting a full return to flight testing.
How severe was the retrenchment?
March 2026 reports described a far smaller company. Seoul Economic Daily reported that approximately 296 employees—about 78% of the reported workforce—were laid off, leaving roughly 70 to 80 people. The Los Angeles Times separately reported layoffs affecting close to 300 employees. Those figures are secondary-source reports, not headcount numbers Supernal publicly disclosed in the cited materials (Seoul Economic Daily; Los Angeles Times).

The combination of executive turnover, workforce reductions and a shift to a lean technical organization is best described as a major restructuring and retrenchment. It is not the same as an announced cancellation.
What does the new CTO appointment prove—and not prove?
Gandhi’s appointment demonstrates that Supernal retained a technical leadership function and intended to continue some form of development and certification work. The company said it was conducting internal validation and limiting external updates.
That statement does not prove that the former program restarted at its previous scale. A small team can preserve engineering knowledge, intellectual property, regulatory coordination and certification planning while flight testing and production decisions remain paused.

Why certification matters more than a prototype flight
Commercial eVTOL service requires far more than a successful demonstration. The aircraft must satisfy the FAA’s airworthiness and production requirements, while operators must meet operational, pilot, maintenance, infrastructure and safety obligations. Supernal’s own description of its current work refers to FAA coordination, not completed certification.
The FAA’s advanced-air-mobility framework illustrates why the schedule was vulnerable: design approval, flight testing, production conformity and operational approvals proceed through separate steps. A demonstrator flight validates technology; it does not authorize passenger service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Supernal’s setback a sign that eVTOL is collapsing?
The wider sector shows a mixed picture rather than a uniform collapse. In March 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA announced eight proposals selected for an eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, and the FAA later reported a July 2026 medical-transport milestone. The cited participants included Joby, Archer, BETA and Electra—not Supernal (DOT; FAA).

Joby says it has accumulated thousands of test flights and continues a long-running FAA certification effort in its regulatory filings (SEC filing). It also announced a piloted eVTOL flight between two public airports in August 2025 (Joby). Archer likewise says it is progressing through FAA certification and has conducted years of testing (Archer). These milestones show regulatory and technical momentum elsewhere, but they do not establish Supernal’s certification stage or imply that any of those companies already provide routine, FAA-certified U.S. passenger air-taxi service.

Bottom line
Supernal appears to have been radically scaled back, not publicly abandoned. The 2025 pause followed a leadership crisis and was followed by reported mass layoffs; the 2026 CTO appointment shows that Hyundai preserved a smaller technical operation focused on validation and certification work. Until Supernal publishes a revised schedule, flight-test evidence and certification milestones, its original 2028 commercial-flight goal is an historical ambition—not a confirmed date.
