Amazon.com does not provide a normal self-service preview page for an unused gift card. The regular Gift Card Balance page shows funds already attached to the signed-in account; it is not a lookup tool for an unrelated claim code. You can avoid redemption by reading a printed denomination, matching an Amazon-purchased card to its order record, or asking Amazon Customer Service to investigate.
This guide covers Amazon.com in the United States. Menu names and gift-card rules can differ on other country sites.

Identify what you are trying to check
“Gift card balance” can mean several different things:
- An unused physical or digital card: You want its value before applying it to an account.
- An account balance: A card was already redeemed and you want to see the remaining funds.
- Redemption status: You suspect someone already applied the card.
- A promotional credit: A courtesy credit or promotional certificate may be tracked separately from gift-card funds.
Entering a valid claim code in Amazon’s redemption flow is normally an instruction to apply the card, not a harmless preview. If the card must remain available for another person or account, do not submit the code while signed in.

Ways to find an unused card’s value without redeeming it
1. Read the denomination printed on the card
Many physical cards show their value on the front or packaging. If the amount is printed, that is the safest check and requires no Amazon account, claim code, or website.
2. Match an Amazon-purchased card to Your Orders
Amazon staff guidance says some physical cards sold through Amazon do not have the value printed on them. If you can access the purchasing account, use the order record:
- Sign in to the Amazon.com account used to buy the card.
- Open Your Orders and search for the gift-card purchase.
- Open the order details and locate the card’s serial number.
- Compare that serial number with the number printed on the physical card.
- Use the matching order record to identify the card’s purchase value.
See Amazon’s instructions for this method at Amazon’s customer forum. The serial number is not the same as the claim code and is not a public balance credential.
This option may fail when the card was bought at a supermarket or other retailer, a household member used a different Amazon account, the order is unavailable, or the serial number is damaged. A receipt or the purchaser’s account may then be necessary.

For cards bought in a store, the receipt often states the denomination. For a digital card, review the original Amazon email, order confirmation, or delivery record. Do not follow an unfamiliar redemption link until you have confirmed that the message is genuine.

4. Ask Amazon Customer Service to investigate
Support is the official route when the value or status cannot be established from the card or purchase record. It is a possible investigation, not a guaranteed balance-disclosure service.
- Start at Amazon’s official Contact Us page or the Amazon app.
- Sign in if possible, choose the gift-card or payment-help category, and select chat or phone support.
- Explain: “I want to verify the value or redemption status of an Amazon.com gift card without applying the claim code to my account.”
- Have the physical card or gift-card email, serial number, purchase receipt or order number, approximate purchase date, and retailer available.
- Provide the claim code only inside an authenticated Amazon support interaction if an associate specifically requests it.
Amazon guidance refers to 16-digit or 30-digit serial numbers on the backs of some cards. Support may request a serial number, claim code, or order information and may be unable to verify a card without proof of purchase.
How to view a balance that is already redeemed
If the card has already been applied to your Amazon account, use the account balance page:

- Open Your Account.
- Select Gift cards or Gift Card Balance. Depending on the interface, you may see Gift Cards & Top Up or Manage your gift card balance.
- Review the displayed balance and open the transaction or activity section to see additions and deductions.
You can also go directly to https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/gc/balance. Amazon says transaction details can include order IDs or serial numbers. App and website labels change by device, app version, and marketplace, so look for the gift-card balance function rather than one permanent menu path.
This page reports funds already associated with that account. It does not reveal the value of an unredeemed card in your hand.

How to determine whether a card was already redeemed
An authorized attempt to redeem a card may produce an “already redeemed” or similar message. Amazon’s support guidance notes that the code could have been applied to the current account or to another account. The funds might also already appear in the original recipient’s balance.
Do not repeatedly enter the code as a diagnostic test: a valid, unused code can be applied during that process. If preserving the card for another account matters, contact Support first and ask for an investigation using the serial number, purchase information, and other details.
Important distinctions and limitations
Serial number versus claim code
The serial number identifies the card for order matching or support investigations. The claim code is the credential used to redeem it. Never publish either number in a forum, listing, social post, or message to an unknown person.
Promotional credits may be elsewhere
A promotional certificate, courtesy credit, or other promotion may not be included in the ordinary gift-card total. Amazon forum guidance discusses promotional credits separately at this support page. Check the promotion’s terms or the related order/account page.
Marketplace matters
This article concerns Amazon.com in the United States. A card issued for Amazon.com should be handled through the marketplace and terms associated with that card; do not assume that another country’s Amazon site will show or accept it.

Redemption associates funds with one account
Before redeeming, verify the account name and email shown in the Amazon header. Amazon support guidance warns users to be signed in to the intended account. Applying the code to the wrong account can remove the flexibility to give or use the card elsewhere.

Scams and unsafe “balance checkers” to avoid
- Do not enter a claim code on a third-party balance-checking website. Such sites can capture the code and drain the card.
- Do not call phone numbers from random search results, PDFs, social posts, or unsolicited emails. Begin at Amazon’s own website or app.
- Do not give a code to a buyer, seller, caller, or person claiming to be Amazon support outside an authenticated Amazon channel.
- Amazon warns that legitimate merchants and Amazon Pay will not require gift cards as an off-platform payment method. Review Amazon Pay’s gift-card scam guidance.
If a card appears to have a zero balance or an “already redeemed” status, that does not by itself prove theft. It could have been used on another account, affected by a transaction issue, or subject to marketplace restrictions. Ask Amazon to investigate.

Under Amazon’s terms, redeemed gift-card funds are associated with the account to which the code was applied and are intended for eligible purchases. Amazon’s gift-card terms and limitations are at Amazon.com’s terms page. Legal exceptions and local rules can apply, but do not assume a redeemed balance can be transferred to another account or converted to cash. Amazon also explains that Amazon.com gift cards are not a payment method for Amazon Pay third-party checkout at Amazon Pay Help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check an Amazon gift card with only its serial number?
Amazon does not document a public serial-number balance lookup. A serial number can help match an Amazon purchase or support investigation, but it does not independently display an unused card’s balance.
Is the claim code the same as the serial number?
No. The claim code is used for redemption; the serial number identifies the card for order matching or support. Keep both confidential.

Will Amazon Support definitely tell me the value?
No guarantee is published. Support may investigate value or redemption status, subject to verification, proof of purchase, account information, and the card’s circumstances.
What if I received the card as a gift?
Ask the purchaser for the receipt or original order details. If that is not possible, contact Amazon through its official support page with the card and available identifying information.
Can I move a redeemed balance to another account?
Do not assume so. Redemption associates the funds with the account used, and Amazon’s terms control any available remedies.
Does the Amazon app show the same balance as the website?
The underlying account balance is intended to be the same, but menu names and locations vary by app version, device, and marketplace. Look for Gift Card Balance or Manage gift card balance.

Stop entering the code and contact Amazon Support. Provide the serial number, purchase information, and any order or receipt details so Amazon can investigate whether it was applied to another account.
How can I recognize an Amazon gift-card scam?
Treat unsolicited requests for gift-card codes, demands to pay a bill with gift cards, unofficial support numbers, and websites asking for the full claim code as red flags. Use Amazon’s own website or app instead.
