Hyundai and Kia both reported record U.S. sales for September 2026, but the available figures do not show that the year began with those records. Hyundai Motor America sold 77,439 vehicles in September, up 9% year over year, while Kia America sold 77,009, up 18%. Hyundai reported detailed Palisade figures; the Kia report names Telluride as a contributor but gives no model-specific count.
What Hyundai and Kia sold in September 2026
The latest figures in the cited reports cover September and the third quarter, not the opening months of 2026. Hyundai Motor America called September its best September ever, reporting 77,439 U.S. vehicle sales, 9% above September 2025. Yonhap News Agency reported that Kia America sold 77,009 vehicles in September, up 18% and a best-ever September for the company.
These are company-wide U.S. sales totals. They are not market-share figures, and the reports do not establish that the two companies’ totals use identical retail-only definitions.
Hyundai’s September, third-quarter and year-to-date results
Hyundai Motor America reported 246,896 U.S. sales in the third quarter of 2026, up 3% from the same quarter in 2025. Its year-to-date total through September was 697,464, also up 3% year over year. Hyundai President and CEO Randy Parker said the company had “record September sales and its strongest third quarter to date,” attributing the result to growth across SUV, sedan and hybrid lineups. How Palisade sales changed by period
The 2026 Hyundai Palisade is a three-row SUV. Hyundai’s model figures show a strong September alongside a slightly weaker third quarter, so the period matters when describing whether sales were up.

What the Kia report says about Telluride
Yonhap’s October 2 report identifies Telluride among the models contributing to Kia America’s record September, but it does not provide Telluride’s September unit count, growth rate, third-quarter total or year-to-date total. The evidence supports saying the model contributed to Kia’s company-wide result—not that Telluride itself set a record or drove a specified share of sales. Yonhap’s report on Hyundai and Kia’s September U.S. sales gives Kia’s company total and names contributing models.
How to read the records without mixing measures
- Company versus model: Hyundai’s 77,439 and Kia’s 77,009 are company totals; Palisade’s figures are model totals. No equivalent Telluride count is stated in the cited Kia report.
- Month versus quarter or year to date: Palisade was up sharply in September, down slightly for Q3, and up YTD through September. Those comparisons are not interchangeable.
- Sales measure: Hyundai’s detailed release reports sales totals. Historical retail figures published separately by Hyundai should not be merged with those totals.
What Hyundai says about the 2026 Palisade
At the model’s April 2025 launch, Hyundai described the 2026 Palisade as a three-row SUV and announced hybrid and XRT PRO variants. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the product, not independent assessments of the vehicle. Hyundai’s launch announcement also quoted product-planning executive Olabisi Boyle describing design, technology, comfort and a reimagined third row as priorities. Hyundai later said Palisade U.S. retail sales grew about 13% in 2025 versus 2024 and that the all-new model passed 40,000 retail units in its first eight months of U.S. sales, with hybrids accounting for 25%. Those are manufacturer-reported historical retail figures published in February 2026, a different measure and period from the September 2026 sales counts above.
