Hype vs. Utility: Is Crypto Building Lasting Value?

Crypto has real use cases, but evidence of activity is not the same as proof of lasting value. Here’s how to distinguish practical utility from speculation.

Crypto is showing signs of useful activity, but that does not mean it has moved beyond hype or speculation. Some on-chain activity held up during a sharp market-value decline, and stablecoins and tokenization have practical financial uses. Yet stablecoin activity is still led by crypto trading, and headline transaction totals do not prove widespread consumer payments. To judge whether a crypto service is useful, look for repeat use, real costs and benefits, and evidence that it solves a specific problem—not just a rising token price.

What counts as crypto utility?

Utility means a network or service is repeatedly used to do a defined job, such as moving value, settling a transaction, or representing a financial asset. Useful evidence includes repeat use, fees actually paid, settlement performance, and the cost to the end user. Hype, by contrast, often rests on claims about future adoption or price appreciation without showing that people rely on the service today.

Market capitalization measures the market value assigned to crypto assets; it does not measure service quality. Nor does network activity automatically benefit the holders of a token associated with that network. A system can be used without establishing that its token is a good investment.

Can crypto activity persist when prices fall?

Chainalysis’s 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index reports a striking divergence for July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026: crypto market capitalization fell about 50%, or $2.1 trillion, while Chainalysis’s estimate of on-chain economic activity declined 1.6%, from $9.5 trillion to $9.4 trillion. Its measure includes service inflows, domestic peer-to-peer activity, and cross-border transfers; its adoption index also tracks balances.

This suggests that measured activity did not fall in step with market value over that period. It does not show that all of the activity met everyday needs, was payment-related, or generated lasting value for token holders. Chainalysis’s figures are estimates based on its own methodology, not a universal measure of utility.

Why other user estimates do not settle the question

a16z crypto estimated roughly 40–70 million active crypto users in its 2025 State of Crypto report. That is an industry estimate, not an official count, and it uses a different measure from Chainalysis’s activity figures. User estimates, transaction flows, market capitalization, and transaction volume describe different things; they should not be combined as if they formed one standardized adoption score.

Are stablecoins being used beyond crypto markets?

Stablecoins—digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value, commonly relative to a currency—have grown substantially. The Federal Reserve’s April 8, 2026 report says their market capitalization grew about 50% during 2025 and reached $317 billion on April 6, 2026. That is evidence of a larger market, not by itself evidence of broad consumer payment use.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) says stablecoins’ leading use so far has been crypto trading, with offshore stores of value also relevant in emerging markets where currencies are vulnerable. Chainalysis describes another practical motivation in some lower-wage or volatile-currency settings: using stablecoins to move value or hedge economic uncertainty. These patterns vary by country and user; they should not be assumed to describe every market.

Why transaction totals can overstate payment activity

The BIS estimated $28 trillion in stablecoin transaction volume in 2025, but cautions that values are far lower after accounting for transfers between wallets owned by the same party. Even adjusted volume would not, on its own, establish that people are using stablecoins to pay merchants or send remittances at scale.

The International Monetary Fund’s 2026 annual report says cross-border and remittance use is expanding but remains small overall. The BIS also finds that payment performance varies once fees, exchange-rate spreads, and the cost of converting money into and out of stablecoins are included. A transfer that looks fast or cheap on a blockchain may be less attractive after those costs are counted.

Is tokenization ready to deliver lasting value?

Tokenization represents assets or financial claims as digital tokens that can be recorded and transferred on a digital system. The IMF’s 2026 annual report describes tokenization as moving toward commercial deployment while remaining in its infancy. It could speed transactions, reduce costs, or broaden access, but those are potential benefits rather than proof of widespread success.

Digital systems can also make prices change rapidly, including in a “flash crash.” The BIS’s June 23, 2026 statement on its Annual Economic Report argues that innovation should be integrated into the existing financial architecture in the public interest while preserving trust. BIS General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos put it this way: “By integrating digital innovation such as tokenisation into the existing financial architecture, authorities can shape the future of money, the economy and the financial system in the public interest while preserving trust.”

What risks can undermine crypto’s practical value?

A service can have a useful purpose and still expose users or the financial system to serious risks. The design and safeguards matter as much as the use case.

  • Stablecoin backing and redemption: Reserve composition and a holder’s ability to redeem tokens affect whether a stablecoin can maintain its intended value when users want their money back.
  • Operational integrity: Public-ledger integrity, security, interoperability between systems, and clear regulatory oversight affect whether assets can be transferred and relied upon as expected.
  • Market structure: The Federal Reserve flags complex intermediation, vertical integration, and retail adoption as possible sources of financial-stability vulnerability. Growth in use can connect a product more closely to conventional finance and its risks.
  • Fast-moving prices: Tokenized markets may enable rapid repricing or flash crashes, a risk the IMF highlights alongside potential efficiency gains.

How can you test a claim that a crypto project has lasting value?

There is no established universal score for “lasting value.” Before relying on a project’s adoption or usefulness claims, ask concrete questions about the service and the user it is meant to help:

  1. Is there a recurring need? Look for repeat use for a specific task, not a burst of activity driven by one-off incentives.
  2. Does use persist through a downturn? Activity during falling prices can be informative, but check what the activity represents rather than treating every transaction as evidence of utility.
  3. Is value actually paid for the service? Distinguish fees earned by a network or service from raw transaction counts, and do not assume that usage accrues to a particular token holder.
  4. What does the user really pay? Include network fees, exchange-rate spreads, and the costs of converting funds in and out—not just the advertised transfer fee.
  5. Who benefits, and where? Check whether the use case fits a particular user need and jurisdiction; evidence from one country or group does not establish broad demand everywhere.
  6. Can users rely on the arrangement? For a stablecoin or tokenized asset, examine reserve quality, redemption terms, security, operational resilience, legal clarity, compliance, and interoperability.

These are practical evaluation criteria, not an industry-standard rating system. They help separate a service’s observable performance from projections about its future or the price of a related asset.
