Then cap deposits, calculate each contract’s worst-case loss including costs, and monitor all open positions. There is no regulator-approved budget amount or position-size formula that guarantees a profit.
How much should you put into a prediction market?
There is no universal monthly amount or recommended percentage of a bankroll that fits every trader. The CFTC advises trading only with “risk capital”—money you can afford to risk after living expenses and other savings needs have been met. Its guidance does not establish a budget formula that makes trading profitable. Read the CFTC’s guidance on prediction markets and event contracts.
Start by deciding how much you could lose without delaying bills, drawing down emergency savings, or missing other savings goals. Treat that amount as a ceiling, not a target to spend. Do not borrow to trade or use essential funds to replenish losses.
Set a deposit ceiling and review schedule
Choose a maximum total deposit for a defined period before you enter a market. Set a calendar date to review it; avoid raising the limit in the heat of a win or loss. A deposit ceiling helps control how much money reaches the platform, but it does not by itself cap the risk on positions already open.

Work out the loss before buying a contract
Read the specific contract’s terms rather than assuming every prediction market works alike. The CFTC says common yes/no event contracts can have two outcomes, a fixed payout—usually $1—and an expiration or settlement point. In its illustration, a 70-cent yes contract that settles yes pays $1, leaving 30 cents before taxes and fees; if it settles no, the trader loses the investment. That is an explanatory example, not a universal contract specification. Some contracts have multiple choices or partial payouts, and the terms of the market you trade control.

For each position, identify the amount you would lose if the result is unfavorable, then include applicable fees and other costs. A contract’s quoted price is not your guaranteed return: even a favorable settlement can produce a different net result once costs are included. The CFTC advises customers to understand commissions, fees, penalties, taxes, and other costs that affect returns.
Check how the contract will be resolved
Before committing money, find the precise resolution conditions, expiration time, source used to determine the result, who makes the settlement decision, and whether the rules describe a dispute process. A headline or informal description may leave out details that determine whether a position pays.

Pay especially close attention when settlement depends on a person’s discrete conduct, such as saying particular words, attending an event, or interacting with someone. In a September 22, 2026 advisory, the CFTC said some “mention markets” raise heightened manipulation concerns when settlement turns on conduct that may not be independently generated or externally verifiable. That warning concerns those contract designs; it does not mean every event contract has the same risk. Read the CFTC advisory on mention markets.
Compare the full risk, not just the quoted price
When deciding whether to enter a contract—or comparing contracts or venues—check the dimensions that affect your maximum loss, ability to exit, and confidence in settlement.

| What to check | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Exposure and payoff | How much money is at risk under the actual contract terms? What does each possible settlement pay? |
| Resolution | What exact wording, deadline, authoritative source, and decision process determine the result? Is a dispute process stated? |
| Total cost | What commissions, fees, penalties, taxes, or other costs apply? A headline price alone does not show your net return. |
| Liquidity and exit | Can you trade out before settlement, and at what available price and depth? An exit may be unavailable or may realize a loss. |
| Venue controls and protections | What registration and oversight apply to this venue? How are account funds handled, and are deposit limits, breaks, or self-exclusion available? |
The CFTC notes that some contracts may be less liquid and that customers may trade out before settlement at the current market price. That price can still reflect a loss, and available depth may be limited. Do not assume you can exit at the price you paid or at a favorable price.

Monitor all unsettled positions together, including contracts that depend on the same event. Several positions can be exposed to one underlying outcome even when they appear on separate markets. A simple ledger can help you see the total amount at risk:
Best Value
- Record each contract, its resolution conditions, and its settlement date.
- Note the amount exposed, expected costs, and possible settlement outcomes.
- Group positions that depend on the same event so you can see concentrated exposure.
- Update the record when you close or add to a position.
This tracking approach is a practical way to monitor open exposure, not a regulator-prescribed spreadsheet or correlation formula.
Use platform controls as guardrails, not guarantees
Controls differ by platform. Kalshi’s responsible-trading page lists temporary trading breaks, self-exclusion, monthly deposit limits, mental-health support, educational guides, and account security. Its monthly deposit limit is one example of a platform-specific tool, not a standard feature across prediction markets. Check the current settings and terms for the venue you actually use. See Kalshi’s responsible-trading tools.
The CFTC also identifies monitoring positions and stop-loss orders as possible ways to help manage risk and potential losses. A stop order is not a guaranteed exit price: the market may move or have limited liquidity, and execution can differ from the trigger price.
Do not let a promotion change your affordable-loss limit. In an August 12, 2026 advisory about designated contract market incentive programs, the CFTC raised concerns about deficient self-certifications and adequate notice of program terms. Read the actual conditions of an incentive before relying on it, and keep your budget independent of promotional offers. Read the CFTC advisory on incentive-program self-certifications.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Confirm that the money is separate from living expenses and savings needs.
- Check your deposit ceiling and whether you have reached your planned pause point.
- Read the contract wording, settlement source, deadline, and decision process.
- Calculate the unfavorable-outcome loss and include fees and other costs.
- Consider how the position changes your total exposure, including related open contracts.
- Check whether the market is liquid enough for an exit you might need, without assuming an exit is guaranteed.
Keep the budget review on the schedule you chose, rather than revising it immediately after a win or loss. A market price reflects market expectations; it is not a guaranteed probability, and a winning position does not establish that a larger budget is safe.
