Reports say some UrCove hotels in China sold World of Hyatt points and elite-qualifying nights for stays guests did not take, and that Hyatt later revoked rewards or deactivated accounts. Hyatt’s published terms give it a basis to withhold credit when a member was not physically present for any night. But that rule does not settle whether participating hotels misled customers, whether Hyatt adequately oversaw affiliated properties, or what individual members understood. The available reporting does not establish a court finding that assigns responsibility.
What the reported Hyatt phantom-stay scheme involved
In an August 31, 2025 report, travel writer Ben Schlappig of One Mile at a Time said several UrCove properties in China, particularly in Chengdu and Hangzhou, offered packages that reportedly generated World of Hyatt points and elite-qualifying nights without guests staying at the hotels. The report said some properties issued official invoices, which could have made the transactions appear legitimate to customers. It described UrCove as part of a joint venture involving Homeinns Hotel Group and Hyatt. These are details attributed to that report, not findings from a court or an independently verified investigation. One Mile at a Time’s account
The same report said members who received credits through the alleged arrangement were subsequently banned and had status or rewards revoked. It gave different figures in different passages: around 1,700 accounts flagged and nearly 2,000 members banned. Neither figure was confirmed as an official total in the reporting covered here, so they should not be treated as a settled count.
What Hyatt’s terms say about stays that earn credit
Hyatt’s current World of Hyatt Terms & Conditions reserve the company’s discretion to deny points, Tier-Qualifying Night Credits, in-hotel benefits, and milestone rewards when a member is not physically present for any night of a stay. The terms also describe circumstances involving an identity mismatch in which benefits may be denied.

That presence rule supports Hyatt’s position that a booking or invoice alone does not necessarily qualify a member for credit. It does not establish what a particular member knew, whether a hotel’s offer was authorized in the relevant respect, or whether the member knowingly broke program rules. The terms page is current, but the effective date of the relevant wording has not been established here.
What Hyatt said about account enforcement
In a December 12, 2024 Washington Post report, Hyatt said it had identified and deactivated accounts that violated program terms through “fraudulent behaviors.” The company also said it was committed to the program’s “integrity and fairness” and encouraged members close to a tier to earn qualifying activity through a stay. Those are Hyatt’s statements as quoted by the Post, not an independent determination of the facts behind each account action. The Washington Post report

Why a mattress run is different from a phantom stay
A real stay to reach a status threshold
A mattress run means paying for and completing a hotel stay mainly to reach a loyalty-program threshold. It may be an expensive way to pursue status, but the member is physically present for the stay. The Washington Post’s December 2024 account said Hyatt Globalist qualification required 60 nights at that time and noted that Hyatt card spending could count toward some qualifying nights. Qualification rules can change, so check Hyatt’s current terms before relying on a threshold or method.
Credit for a stay that never happened
A phantom stay is different: the member seeks credit for a night without being present at the hotel. Hyatt’s presence language addresses that distinction. Do not assume an invoice or a property’s participation makes such credit eligible under World of Hyatt rules.

How to assess a legitimate mattress run
Summer Hull, The Points Guy’s director of content, told the Washington Post: “You just need to do the math.” Compare the cost of the real stay and any related expenses with the likely value of the status benefits during the following year. Also account for the possibility that a paid booking will not earn credit if you fail to check in or the property does not process the stay as expected. A hotel credit card may offer another qualifying route in some circumstances, but confirm current mechanics directly with Hyatt rather than relying on an older report.

Responsibility depends on facts that the published terms and secondary reporting do not resolve for every participant. Relevant questions include whether the member stayed, what the member was told, how prominently eligibility rules were disclosed, what role the property played in offering or recording the transaction, whether it was authorized or controlled by Hyatt in the relevant respect, and what notice and process accompanied any loss of points, status, or account access.

The reporting describes properties marketing or processing the packages, which raises questions about hotel conduct and Hyatt’s oversight of affiliated operators. Hyatt, meanwhile, points to its terms and reported enforcement against behavior it characterized as fraudulent. Neither account alone establishes what each member knew or whether every property action was approved by Hyatt. The sources covered here do not establish a final legal finding allocating responsibility among members, UrCove operators, and Hyatt.

What members should do if a Hyatt account is affected
- Review the notice from World of Hyatt and identify the specific points, nights, status, or account access affected.
- Keep booking confirmations, invoices, payment records, communications with the property, and proof of whether you were physically present.
- Ask Hyatt to explain the decision and identify the transactions at issue; distinguish a completed stay from any credit tied to a night you did not take.
- For future qualification, use a stay you actually complete or another method listed in Hyatt’s current terms, and retain records showing the qualifying activity.
