The Hurun India Rich List 2026 includes 156 people who live overseas, up from 101 in the previous edition—a rise of 55, or about 54%. The list’s top-ranked overseas Indian is Lakshmi Niwas Mittal and family, with Hurun-estimated wealth of ₹3,39,300 crore. The year-over-year count is not proof that 55 people emigrated from India during the year.
What does the 54% increase measure?
Mint’s report on the Hurun India Rich List 2026 counts 156 overseas-resident people on the list, compared with 101 in the preceding edition. That is 55 more people, or roughly 54% growth in the list’s overseas-resident count. The comparison tracks who appears on successive lists while living abroad; it does not identify 55 individual departures from India or explain why anyone moved. List membership and residence status can both change between editions. Mint reported the figures on 5 October 2026.
Where do the overseas list members live?
The reported breakdown places most of the overseas-resident members in three destinations:
| Location | People on the list |
|---|---|
| United States | 90 |
| United Arab Emirates | 31 |
| United Kingdom | 16 |
| Singapore | 7 |
| Canada | 4 |
| China | 2 |
| Elsewhere | 6 |
| Total | 156 |
The United States, UAE and United Kingdom together account for 137 of the 156 people in Mint’s reported breakdown. “Elsewhere” is the source’s combined category, not a named country.

Who is the richest NRI on the Hurun list?
Lakshmi Niwas Mittal and family rank first among overseas Indians, followed by Anil Agarwal and family, then Vinod Khosla. These are Hurun wealth estimates as reported by Mint, not audited personal balance sheets or measures of cash available to spend.
| Overseas rank | Person or family | Estimated wealth |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lakshmi Niwas Mittal and family | ₹3,39,300 crore |
| 2 | Anil Agarwal and family | ₹2,08,300 crore |
| 3 | Vinod Khosla | ₹1,16,200 crore |
Mittal is associated with ArcelorMittal. The Economic Times reports that Hurun’s estimates use a snapshot dated 24 August 2026, when the US dollar was valued at ₹95.63. That valuation date matters: the figures are point-in-time estimates, not current-day valuations. The Economic Times describes the valuation basis and list criteria.

Who qualifies as an overseas Indian on the list?
In this coverage, “NRI” is shorthand for an Indian-origin person living outside India. The reported inclusion rule is broader than Indian citizenship: the list includes people born or brought up in India regardless of their present residence or passport. It should not be read as a census of Indian citizens abroad. The list is a dated wealth ranking, not a migration study. Business Standard reports the wider list totals and context.

Business Standard reports that the 2026 list includes 1,810 individuals with wealth of at least ₹1,000 crore and combined wealth of ₹187.5 lakh crore, 12.8% higher year over year. This broader context describes the entire list, not only the people living overseas.
