IDC and Omdia put the market decline at about 4%, while Counterpoint measured a 2.4% drop. Across all three estimates, Huawei held roughly 18% of the market, making its lead real but narrow rather than dominant.
What happened in Q2 2025?
The quarter covered April 1 through June 30, 2025. During that period, Huawei reclaimed the No. 1 position in mainland China’s smartphone market after more than four years, according to IDC-based reporting. Omdia and Counterpoint reached the same broad conclusion.

The result needs one important qualification: the published figures primarily measure smartphone shipments, not necessarily phones purchased by consumers. Shipments track devices moving into distribution channels, while sell-through measures consumer purchases. Headlines often use “sales” for both, but the distinction matters when interpreting a market slowdown.
The numbers vary by research firm
There is no single universally definitive Q2 figure because research firms use different datasets, channel definitions and methodologies. Nevertheless, their estimates consistently show Huawei narrowly in front.

| Research firm | China market change | Huawei result | Second-place detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDC | Down 4% year over year, to about 69 million units | About 12.5 million units; 18.1% share | Huawei returned to first place after more than four years |
| Counterpoint Research | Down 2.4% | Shipments up 17.6%; 18.1% share, compared with 15% a year earlier | Growth estimate is specific to Counterpoint’s methodology |
| Omdia | Down 4% | About 12.2 million units; roughly 18% share | vivo: 11.8 million units and 17% share |
The most defensible summary is therefore that Huawei shipped approximately 12.2 million to 12.5 million smartphones and captured about 18% to 18.1% of the market. That was enough to lead, but not enough to suggest an unchallenged position.
Why did China’s smartphone market shrink?
The Q2 decline followed an unusually supportive first quarter. China’s national consumer-subsidy program lowered the effective price of eligible electronics, encouraging some consumers to bring forward purchases. That created an early boost, particularly around the holiday period and the first quarter.
By Q2, the subsidy’s incremental impact had weakened. Some consumers who might otherwise have upgraded during the quarter had already bought phones earlier in the year. This created a tougher year-over-year comparison and left fewer immediate upgrades to capture.

Manufacturers released some important models earlier to take advantage of subsidy-driven demand, leaving fewer major launches in Q2. In a market where new products can prompt upgrades, that timing reduced momentum during the quarter.
Other contributing factors included cautious consumer spending, normal second-quarter seasonality and weaker underlying demand. The evidence does not support describing the market as a collapse, nor does it show that subsidies were the only cause. A better interpretation is that subsidies supported demand early in 2025, while their additional effect slowed later.

Why Huawei grew while the market contracted
Huawei’s performance appears to reflect several factors working together rather than one single explanation.
A broader midrange and high-end portfolio
Counterpoint linked Huawei’s growth to strong performance from newly introduced mid-to-high-end models. The company was not relying solely on one premium flagship category. Its portfolio included high-end Mate and Pura devices alongside Nova products aimed at more price-sensitive buyers.
That broader coverage matters in a subsidy-supported market. Consumers receiving a discount may trade up within a budget, while buyers seeking a premium device may still value Huawei’s camera capabilities, brand reputation and domestic ecosystem.
Domestic brand strength and ecosystem appeal
Huawei retains unusually strong recognition among Chinese consumers. HarmonyOS and its wider device ecosystem give the company a point of differentiation beyond handset specifications. That does not prove that geopolitics alone caused its rebound, but domestic brand preference and interest in Chinese technology platforms provide important context.
U.S.-China technology restrictions are also part of the competitive backdrop. However, it would be too broad to attribute the quarter’s result solely to sanctions or patriotic purchasing. The available evidence also points to product breadth, model launches and execution in distribution and inventory management.

Improved shipment and inventory execution
IDC commentary cited Huawei’s brand appeal and shipment management. Efficiently matching inventory with demand is especially important when the broader market is slowing. A company that avoids excessive channel stock can maintain availability for popular models without relying as heavily on aggressive discounting.

How the result affects vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and Honor
Huawei’s return to the top increases pressure on every major domestic competitor. The market is fragmented, and a share near 18% still leaves most sales to other brands.
Omdia placed vivo second in Q2 with 11.8 million shipments and a 17% share. The small gap between Huawei and vivo illustrates how quickly quarterly rankings can change with product launches, pricing and channel inventory.
IDC reporting indicated that four of the five largest vendors experienced shipment declines, showing that Huawei’s growth was not simply the result of a rapidly expanding market. Instead, Huawei gained relative strength while demand weakened overall. OPPO, Xiaomi and Honor therefore faced a more difficult environment in which promotions had to compete for a smaller pool of buyers.
These rankings should not be read as a complete measure of financial performance. Unit share does not equal revenue share, and revenue does not equal profit. A premium-heavy vendor can generate more sales value with fewer units, while a value-focused vendor may ship more phones at lower margins.

What Huawei’s lead means for Apple
Huawei’s recovery is particularly significant for Apple because both companies compete for premium and upper-premium buyers in China. Huawei’s stronger domestic ecosystem and improved high-end portfolio can make it a more direct alternative to the iPhone than many lower-priced Android brands.
Apple was not necessarily weak in every measurement. Counterpoint’s Q2 sell-through analysis reported growth for both Huawei and Apple, demonstrating that two brands can gain share or grow in particular datasets even while the overall market contracts. Apple also used price reductions on the iPhone 16 line during the quarter, which may have helped it remain competitive.
The strategic concern for Apple is not simply that Huawei ranked first by units in one quarter. It is that Huawei is rebuilding credibility across more price tiers while strengthening a domestic software and hardware ecosystem. That combination can pressure Apple’s premium position, particularly among consumers who value local integration or prefer domestic technology brands.
At the same time, Huawei’s Q2 lead does not establish that it surpassed Apple in revenue, profit or every premium segment. Those conclusions would require a different dataset.
Does this prove a lasting Huawei comeback?
It proves a meaningful quarterly recovery, but not permanent dominance.

Several reasons justify caution:
- The lead was narrow: Huawei’s share was about 18%, while Omdia put vivo at 17%.
- The quarter was affected by subsidy timing and purchases pulled forward into Q1.
- Different research firms reported different market declines and shipment totals.
- Quarterly rankings can shift when major flagship products launch.
- Huawei continues to operate under constraints involving components, software and international market access.
The Q2 result should therefore be separated into three conclusions:
- Quarterly leadership: Huawei was the leading smartphone vendor in mainland China by Q2 shipment estimates from IDC, Counterpoint and Omdia.
- Strategic recovery: Huawei’s shipment growth, product breadth and domestic brand strength indicate a substantial recovery from its earlier position.
- Long-term dominance: One quarter does not establish that Huawei will lead for the full year or permanently control the market.
A durable comeback would require repeated leadership, continued growth without extraordinary subsidy effects, strong performance across price tiers and dependable component availability. Future results will also depend on how aggressively Apple, vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and Honor price and refresh their products.
How to interpret the headline correctly
For readers tracking the technology industry or China’s consumer economy, the most accurate interpretation is not “Huawei dominated while everyone else collapsed.” It is this:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Huawei narrowly regained first place in a slightly contracting market, helped by product momentum and domestic brand strength, while subsidies and earlier purchases made Q2 a harder period for the industry overall.
The distinction between shipments and consumer sales is essential. IDC and Omdia estimated a 4% shipment decline, while Counterpoint estimated a 2.4% decline using its own methodology. Those figures are different, but they describe the same broad direction: China’s smartphone market lost momentum in Q2 after a stronger, subsidy-supported start to the year.
