How Much Did the iPhone 14 Cost Apple to Make? The Best Teardown Estimate

A teardown-based estimate put the standard 128GB iPhone 14’s hardware and manufacturing-related cost at about $501 in 2022. Here is what that figure includes, what it excludes, and why Pro Max estimates differ.

The standard 128GB iPhone 14 likely cost Apple about $501 to build in 2022, according to a teardown-based estimate attributed to TechInsights. That figure covered components, assembly and testing—not Apple’s complete cost of developing, selling and supporting the phone.

It is also important not to confuse this estimate with a separate estimate of roughly $501 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s parts alone. The models, definitions and analyses are different.

Which iPhone 14 does the $501 estimate refer to?

The main estimate applies to the 6.1-inch standard iPhone 14 with 128GB of storage, the base configuration launched in September 2022. It does not refer to the iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple’s specifications list the standard model with an A15 Bionic chip featuring a five-core GPU and 128GB as its base storage option. Apple’s technical specifications confirm those details.

The estimate is historical: it describes the phone’s approximate launch-era cost in 2022, not a current 2026 manufacturing quote.

What the $501 estimate includes

Reporting on TechInsights’ teardown analysis put the standard iPhone 14’s estimated manufacturing-related cost at approximately $501 per unit, around $4 below the comparable iPhone 13 estimate. The reported figure included:

  • Estimated component costs
  • Assembly
  • Testing

The estimate did not include software development, patent royalties, marketing, distribution, warranty costs, Apple’s retail operations or other corporate expenses. The methodology and exclusions are summarized in reporting on the TechInsights estimate.

That makes $501 a useful approximation of the phone’s hardware and manufacturing-related cost—not an Apple-disclosed accounting figure. Apple does not publish a model-by-model manufacturing cost for each iPhone.

Why the standard iPhone 14 was not dramatically more expensive to produce

The standard iPhone 14 retained the A15 Bionic family rather than adopting the A16 Bionic used in the Pro models. Reusing the processor platform helped limit the cost increase associated with a new generation.

However, the phone was not simply an unchanged iPhone 13. TechInsights’ teardown overview identified several internal changes, including:

  • A redesigned printed-circuit-board layout
  • A revised radio-frequency architecture
  • Qualcomm SDX65M modem and related transceiver components
  • New circuitry associated with satellite emergency communication
  • Updated camera and processing-related hardware

Cellular components also varied by region. A phone supporting different network technologies or bands can have a different component mix, while storage capacity changes the cost of memory components. Supplier pricing, production volume and manufacturing yields are private, so a teardown estimate cannot reproduce Apple’s exact invoice cost.

How does $501 compare with the iPhone 14’s price?

The standard 128GB iPhone 14 launched in the United States at $799, before sales tax. A simple comparison looks like this:

Item Amount
Estimated manufacturing-related cost $501
U.S. launch price $799
Arithmetic difference $298
Estimated cost as a share of price 62.7%
Difference as a share of price 37.3%

Those percentages are illustrative, not Apple’s reported gross-margin calculation. The $799 U.S. advertised price generally excludes sales tax, and the teardown estimate may reflect a different regional configuration. More importantly, the $298 difference is not automatically profit.

Why the $298 difference is not Apple’s profit

The gap between a retail price and a component or manufacturing estimate must help fund many costs that are not visible in a teardown:

A teardown estimate is therefore not the same as Apple’s cost of goods sold, and neither figure is the same as net profit. The company may also sell through different channels with different commercial arrangements involving carriers, distributors and retailers.

The separate iPhone 14 Pro Max estimates

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is a substantially different product. A Fomalhaut analysis reported through Nikkei-related coverage estimated its parts cost at about $501, more than $60 above the comparable iPhone 13 Pro Max. That figure was generally described as a parts estimate, not necessarily the same components-plus-assembly-and-testing definition reported for the standard iPhone 14. The Fomalhaut-related report also assigned an estimated component value of approximately $110 to the A16 Bionic in its analysis.

Counterpoint later published a separate bill-of-materials analysis for the iPhone 14 series. Secondary coverage of that work reported a $464 blended BOM estimate for the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro Max. Counterpoint’s analysis and the related summary illustrate why estimates can differ.

Model and source Reported estimate What it represents
Standard iPhone 14, 128GB; TechInsights-related reporting About $501 Components, assembly and testing
iPhone 14 Pro Max; Fomalhaut-related reporting About $501 Primarily estimated parts cost
iPhone 14 Pro Max, 128GB; Counterpoint-related reporting About $464 Blended bill of materials

The Pro models cost more to equip because they introduced the A16 Bionic, a more advanced camera system, a larger primary image sensor, ProMotion display hardware and other premium components. The Pro Max launched at $1,099, but comparing its $501 parts estimate with the standard model’s $501 manufacturing-related estimate would be misleading because both the model and accounting definition differ.

What Apple’s own documents disclose

Apple’s official iPhone 14 Product Environmental Report provides information about materials, manufacturing footprint, energy use, packaging and responsible sourcing. It does not disclose a dollar cost to manufacture one iPhone 14.

Apple’s public financial reporting likewise aggregates costs at company or broad product-category levels rather than identifying the factory cost of an individual iPhone model. As a result, the $501 figure should always be attributed to an independent teardown analysis rather than presented as a number Apple confirmed.

Why teardown estimates are imperfect

Analysts can identify many of the parts inside a phone and assign estimated market values to them. They cannot see Apple’s confidential supplier contracts or internal allocations. The final figure can be affected by:

  • Volume discounts negotiated with suppliers
  • Production yields and defective-unit rates
  • Long-term contracts and currency hedging
  • Regional modem and antenna configurations
  • Storage capacity and memory pricing
  • Assembly location, labor and factory overhead
  • Packaging, logistics and inventory costs
  • Whether assembly, testing or other items are included

For that reason, “BOM,” “parts cost,” “manufacturing cost” and “cost to make” should not be treated as interchangeable terms. A reasonable estimate is not the same thing as audited corporate accounting.
