Short answer: It was plausible that the Huawei Pura 70 family passed two million sales, but the figure is not established here as a confirmed, Huawei-reported final result. The evidence supports strong launch demand and ambitious analyst forecasts. Huawei’s challenge to Apple was most meaningful in mainland China, not as a global sales or buying comparison.
What does the “2 million” claim actually establish?
The headline blurs different measures. A forecast, a shipment into stores, a launch sell-out and a completed sale to a customer are not interchangeable. No cited source provides a clearly audited final figure, or a Huawei announcement defining and confirming more than two million Pura 70 sales.

Reservations reflect intent; shipments count devices entering distribution; sell-through counts consumer purchases. Activations can offer another demand signal, but they are not the same as shipments. Without a clearly defined measure and a final source, the safest reading is that the two-million figure was a reported milestone or estimate, not a verified final total.

Huawei introduced the Pura name for its premium, camera-focused line, replacing the P-series branding. The China family consisted of the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+ and Pura 70 Ultra. Huawei used its Pioneer Program rather than a conventional global-style launch event. Xinhua’s launch coverage describes the program and positioning.

China sales began April 18, 2024, through Huawei’s online store and physical retailers. Rapid sell-outs of some models and store queues were reported, but neither establishes the quantity sold beyond the launch inventory. Reuters-syndicated coverage reported the launch response.
Family pricing and model differences at launch
Omdia’s April 2024 table listed China launch prices of ¥5,499 for the Pura 70, ¥6,499 for the Pro, ¥8,099 for the Pro+ and ¥9,999 for the Ultra. These are historical launch prices, not current prices or a statement of present availability. Omdia’s April 2024 report lists the prices.

The standard Pura 70 was specified with a 6.6-inch-class LTPO OLED display, a 120Hz refresh rate, Kirin 9010, 12GB RAM, 256GB to 1TB storage options, and a 4,900mAh battery. Its listed cameras included a 50MP optically stabilized main camera, a 12MP periscope telephoto camera and a 13MP ultrawide camera. Omdia lists 66W wired and 50W wireless charging and HarmonyOS 4.2 for the China model. Huawei’s specification page and the Omdia table document the specifications. The Ultra had more ambitious camera hardware; its capabilities should not be attributed to every phone in the family.
Why analysts saw a threat to Apple in China
The launch landed during a period of diverging brand performance in China. Counterpoint data cited in Reuters coverage showed Huawei smartphone sales up 64% year over year in the first six weeks of 2024, while Apple sales were down 24% over the same period. Those figures describe each company’s overall phone sales in China, not Pura 70 versus iPhone 15 sales.

A separate report citing Counterpoint gave Huawei’s share as rising from 9.4% to 16.5% and Apple’s as falling from 19% to 15.7% for that period. The same coverage reported Counterpoint analyst Ivan Lam’s expectation that Huawei total smartphone shipments could reach about 60 million in 2024, with Pura 70 an important catalyst. These were market estimates and expectations, not proof that the Pura 70 alone caused the shift. Yicai Global’s report gives the cited share figures and forecast.
Later China-market analysis from Counterpoint said the Pura 70 and Mate 60 families drove much of Huawei’s premium performance. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, meanwhile, accounted for about half of Apple’s China sales in Q2 2024. This provides context for competition between the brands, not a direct model-versus-model sales tally. Counterpoint’s China smartphone coverage discusses the market.

Huawei’s recovery, domestic brand appeal and premium camera positioning all mattered to the story. The available figures do not isolate the role of national-technology sentiment, the Mate 60’s momentum, channel restocking or any one model, so those should not be treated as a single-cause explanation.

Was the Pura 70 a strong iPhone 15 rival?
In mainland China, it was reasonable to call the family a serious premium-market competitor: Huawei had visible launch demand and was regaining ground while Apple faced weaker sales. That is a market-position claim, not evidence that the Pura 70 outsold the iPhone 15, or that one phone was better for every buyer.

The line spans several tiers: the base Pura 70 is not a direct stand-in for the Ultra, just as an entry iPhone 15 is not the same proposition as a Pro Max. Compare like-priced, like-sized models and the specific feature that matters—camera, software, battery, support or ecosystem—rather than treating either family as one uniform device.
What the Kirin 9010 does—and does not—say
Contemporary reporting described the Kirin 9010 as a China-made chip related to the Kirin 9000S in the Mate 60 family and associated the latter with SMIC’s 7nm-class process. That process characterization should be attributed, not treated as a precise performance specification: node labels do not establish equivalence with Apple silicon in speed, efficiency, modem capability or software optimization. What the 2024 comparison means in 2026
This is now a historical assessment of a 2024 launch, not a current buying recommendation. Newer Huawei and Apple generations have since changed the product landscape, and the cited launch prices and forecasts do not establish today’s availability, value or support. The original comparison remains useful for understanding Huawei’s China-market recovery and the limits of judging a phone’s success from a launch sell-out.

Verify support with the seller, carrier and service providers for the exact model and country before purchase.
