On 9 October 2026, Ant Digital Technologies and HSBC announced a technical verification in which an AI agent acting for a user handled three linked steps: finding a digital service, using it, and paying a micropayment that settled in real time. The work was exploratory. The announcement describes it as neither a commercial launch nor a live customer offering, and it does not say that customers can use the setup.
What was actually tested
The question behind the verification was whether an AI agent could carry out service discovery, service use and payment as one automated process, rather than as a set of separate hand-offs between a user, an app and a bank. Three components were combined to test it.
| Component | Provider named in the announcement | Role in the test |
|---|---|---|
| HSBC Tokenised Deposit Service (TDS) | HSBC | Supplied the tokenized deposit payment rails and related settlement capabilities, including real-time risk checks exposed through HSBC’s MCP interface |
| Anvita Flow | Ant Digital Technologies | Network that let agents discover services, invoke them, and manage micropayment settlement |
| Jovay Testnet | Not separately stated in the announcement | Layer 2 blockchain test environment where the transactions were run |
Two details matter for reading the result. First, Jovay Testnet is a test environment, so the settlement shown was not on a live-value system. Second, the announcement describes the technical pieces but does not publish performance data, so the test shows that the flow can be connected, not how well it performs at scale.
How an agent-led micropayment would flow
The announcement describes one connected sequence. The steps below follow the stages it names, in the order it lists them. They are not a user procedure, and no consumer steps or settings were published.

- The agent uses Anvita Flow to discover that service and invoke it.
- Use of the service triggers a micropayment, which the announcement says is handled as part of the same automated process.
- HSBC’s TDS performs real-time risk checks through its MCP interface before the payment completes.
- The payment completes with real-time settlement on the Jovay Testnet Layer 2 environment.
The announcement does not explain how the risk checks decide to approve or block a payment, what limits apply to an agent’s spending, or how a user would authorize an agent in advance. Those are the points a reader would need to judge the design, and they are not covered.
What a tokenized deposit is
A tokenized deposit is a bank deposit represented as a digital token on a ledger. The money remains a claim on the bank, not a separate digital currency issued by a third party. That distinction is the main reason banks explore the format: the payment sits inside the existing banking relationship and regulatory framework rather than in a new kind of money. The announcement does not say which regulatory treatment applies to the agent test, so readers should not assume the same treatment applies to any other arrangement.
Where HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service came from
HSBC announced its Hong Kong TDS on 22 May 2025 as a corporate service for real-time, always-on payments in HKD and USD between corporate wallets held by a client at HSBC Hong Kong. HSBC named Ant International as its first client. That launch was for corporate cash management. The October 2026 test used TDS as a payment component, but the announcement does not say that agent-initiated payments are available through the corporate service.

Is HSBC launching AI-agent payments?
No, not based on this announcement. It describes a technical verification and says it is not a commercial launch or live customer proposition. There is no announced date for commercialization, no pricing, and no list of eligible customers or markets.

It says a micropayment is “often defined as less than $2.00.” That is the announcement’s own characterization, not a settled industry standard, and the test was not reported to be limited to payments under that amount.

There are no competing products in this announcement, so readers comparing it with other agent-payment demonstrations need a consistent set of questions. These are editorial guidance for reading such announcements, not findings about any other project.

The Bottom Line
HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies showed, in an exploratory testnet setting, that an AI agent can connect service discovery, use and a real-time tokenized deposit micropayment in one flow. That is a technical proof of connection. It is not evidence of a launch, customer availability, or production-grade performance, and the announcement does not supply the data needed to judge those.
