HPE vs. Dell Technologies: How Their Businesses and Stocks Compare

HPE and Dell both sell AI-related enterprise infrastructure, but their business mixes, segment definitions, and reporting periods differ. Here’s how to read the latest company figures without mistaking them for a matched stock valuation comparison.

HPE and Dell both sell enterprise infrastructure, including systems built for AI workloads, but their businesses are not interchangeable: Dell also reports a substantial client-device business, while HPE’s FY26 reporting combines server, hybrid cloud, and financial services in Cloud & AI. Recent growth figures look strong at both companies, but they cover different fiscal periods and segment definitions. The available company disclosures support a business comparison—not a verdict on which stock is cheaper or the better investment.

How HPE and Dell make money

The clearest distinction is their reported business mix. Dell divides its reportable businesses between infrastructure and client solutions. HPE’s FY26 segments are Networking, Cloud & AI, and Corporate Investments and Other. Their segment labels therefore should not be treated as direct equivalents.

Company Reported business structure What the segments include
HPE Networking; Cloud & AI; Corporate Investments and Other Cloud & AI reflects a FY26 realignment combining Server, Hybrid Cloud, and Financial Services. Telco and Instant On moved from Networking to Corporate Investments and Other, which also includes advisory and professional services and Hewlett Packard Labs. HPE FY26 Q3 filing
Dell Technologies Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG); Client Solutions Group (CSG) ISG includes AI-optimized servers, traditional servers and networking, and storage. CSG is Dell’s client-device business. Dell FY2026 Form 10-K

What this means for diversification

Dell’s reported results include both enterprise infrastructure and client solutions, so its total-company performance reflects more than server and storage demand. HPE’s Cloud & AI segment brings together server, hybrid-cloud, and financial-services activities; its Networking segment provides a distinct view of networking. This is a useful business-mix difference, but it does not by itself establish which company is more diversified or financially resilient.

Why HPE’s historical segment figures need care

HPE’s FY25 Form 10-K reported $34.296 billion in consolidated revenue: $17.745 billion from Server, $5.754 billion from Hybrid Cloud, $6.850 billion from Networking, and $3.504 billion from Financial Services. These are FY25 figures under the former reporting structure, before Server, Hybrid Cloud, and Financial Services were combined into Cloud & AI for FY26. HPE FY2025 Form 10-K

What the latest reported growth says

The most recent periods in the cited company disclosures do not line up: HPE’s latest quarter here ended July 31, 2026, while Dell’s FY26 ended January 30, 2026. HPE’s quarterly results should not be read as a full-year comparison with Dell’s annual figures.

Company and period Reported figure How to interpret it
HPE, quarter ended July 31, 2026 Total segment revenue of $12.213 billion; Cloud & AI revenue of $9.042 billion, up 25.4% year over year; Networking revenue of $2.893 billion, up 74.9% year over year Company-reported quarterly results under HPE’s FY26 structure. HPE also reported Cloud & AI server revenue of $6.8 billion, up 35.3% year over year. HPE FY26 Q3 results
HPE FY26 outlook, as of its Q3 filing Revenue growth of 34%–37% Management guidance, not realized performance. HPE says it cannot reconcile certain non-GAAP outlook measures to their closest GAAP measures without unreasonable effort because some elements cannot be predicted. HPE FY26 Q3 outlook
Dell, FY26 ended January 30, 2026 ISG net revenue grew 40%; AI-optimized server net revenue grew 166% Figures from Dell’s FY2026 Form 10-K. Dell attributes ISG growth primarily to AI-optimized servers and, to a lesser extent, traditional servers and networking. Dell FY2026 Form 10-K
Dell, FY26 Revenue of $113.5 billion, up 19%; adjusted free cash flow of $11.5 billion, up 271% Company-published investor-relations figures. Adjusted free cash flow is a non-GAAP measure and should not be treated as interchangeable with GAAP cash flow. Dell FY26 financial performance

Reading the growth figures fairly

The percentages above describe different things: HPE’s year-over-year growth in two FY26 segments for one quarter, Dell’s annual ISG growth and AI-server growth, and management’s full-year HPE revenue outlook. They are not a matched comparison of equivalent businesses over the same period. HPE’s older FY25 segments also cannot be mechanically mapped onto its reorganized FY26 categories.

Growth drivers and risks investors should weigh

AI infrastructure demand

Both companies disclose growth tied to AI infrastructure. Dell’s filing describes AI-optimized servers for compute-intensive workloads such as AI model training, fine-tuning, and inferencing. Its FY26 filing also says AI demand and customer adoption contributed to a substantial increase in backlog. HPE’s FY26 Q3 results show growth in Cloud & AI and Networking, including its reported Cloud & AI server revenue.

Timing and execution risk

Dell cautions that customer readiness and component updates or transitions can make the timing of AI-server demand and shipments nonlinear. A larger backlog is therefore not a guarantee that revenue will be recognized at a smooth or predictable pace. Dell’s disclosure supports treating shipment timing and execution as risks; it does not establish that recent growth rates will persist. Dell FY2026 Form 10-K

  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately, not installed, installation required.

Guidance and adjusted measures

HPE’s FY26 revenue-growth outlook is management guidance and remains subject to uncertainty. The company notes that some non-GAAP outlook items cannot be predicted well enough to reconcile them to comparable GAAP measures without unreasonable effort. Dell’s adjusted free-cash-flow figure is also non-GAAP; compare cash generation only after keeping each company’s metric definitions and accounting basis clear.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you about the stocks

These operating disclosures help explain what investors are buying into: Dell combines infrastructure with client-device exposure, while HPE reports Networking separately and places server, hybrid cloud, and financial services within Cloud & AI under its FY26 structure. The companies also report strong activity associated with AI infrastructure, alongside timing or guidance risks.

They do not establish which stock is cheaper, has performed better, or is the better investment. The cited company materials do not provide matched-date share prices, total shareholder returns, market capitalizations, or comparable valuation multiples. A stock comparison needs market data for the same date and consistently defined measures—such as price-to-earnings or enterprise value to operating earnings—before drawing a relative-value conclusion. Operating growth alone is not a substitute for valuation.
