Wrexham AFC’s latest cited wage total is £19.95 million for the year ending June 2025, when the club was in League One. It includes playing and non-playing staff and bonuses, so it is not a current Championship-season figure or a player-only payroll. That total is far below the recent Premier League-season wage figures reported by Southampton and Ipswich, but the disclosures are not directly comparable.
Wrexham’s latest disclosed wage figure
BBC Sport Wales reported that Wrexham’s accounts recorded £19.95 million in wages for the year ending June 2025. The total covers playing and non-playing staff and bonuses. Wrexham played in League One during that accounting period, before its promotion to the Championship.
The reported total was 73.6% higher than the £11.13 million recorded for 2023–24, according to BBC Sport Wales’ analysis of the accounts. The increase shows rising wage costs, but it does not reveal how much Wrexham spent on first-team players alone.
How the reported figures compare
The figures below offer scale, not a like-for-like league ranking. The accounting periods and the coverage of each wage disclosure differ.

| Club | Reported amount | Accounting period and league | What the figure covers or why it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrexham AFC | £19.95 million | 2024–25; League One | Playing and non-playing staff and bonuses; not a player-only total. BBC Sport Wales |
| Southampton | £116 million | 2024–25; Premier League | Reported as wages; Southampton returned to the Championship after the season. BBC Sport |
| Ipswich Town | £77.1 million | 2024–25; Premier League | Reported wage costs, up from £44.5 million the prior year; Ipswich was relegated in May 2025. BBC Sport |
| Birmingham City | £38.9 million | 2024–25; League One | Player wages, up from £35.8 million; a narrower scope than Wrexham’s all-staff figure. BBC Sport |
On the reported totals alone, Wrexham’s £19.95 million is lower than all three comparison figures. But Southampton’s and Ipswich’s totals came from Premier League seasons, with the revenues and spending context of top-flight football. They should not be presented as their current Championship wage bills—or used to calculate a precise ranking of current Championship player payrolls. Birmingham is a closer league-level reference for 2024–25, but its disclosed number covers player wages while Wrexham’s includes other staff and bonuses.
What “biggest” means—and what these figures do not prove
A club can be “biggest” by revenue, squad value, attendance or wage spending; those are different measures. Using disclosed wages as the measure, the figures above show that recent costs at Southampton and Ipswich were much higher than Wrexham’s latest reported all-staff total. They do not establish an exact comparison of the clubs’ current player wages.

The most recent figures cited here describe 2024–25 accounts. They do not provide a 2025–26 or 2026–27 player-only wage figure for Wrexham or a complete current-season Championship ranking. Any claim that Wrexham currently has a £19.95 million first-team payroll would therefore overstate what the accounts disclose.
How Championship cost rules affect the comparison
Championship clubs voted in May 2026 to adopt Squad Cost Rules from the 2026–27 season. As reported by BBC Sport, the rules limit player- and manager-related costs, including transfer fees, to 85% of income and allow a flexible equity top-up.

This is a broader squad-cost measure, not a cap on wages alone. It cannot be compared directly with the wage totals above. A club’s spending capacity also depends on its income and accounting circumstances, so a wage figure by itself does not describe its overall financial position.

Football Association figures reported by BBC Sport put agent fees for February 2025 to February 2026 at £11.74 million for Ipswich, £8.38 million for Southampton and £5.87 million for Leicester. These are recruitment-related fees, not wages, and should not be added to the wage totals as though they were part of the same measure.
