Wigan Athletic owner Mike Danson was estimated to be worth £1.182 billion in The Sunday Times Rich List 2025. That is a published estimate, not an audited account of his personal finances or a measure of cash available to spend on the club.
Who owns Wigan Athletic?
Businessman Mike Danson took over Wigan Athletic in summer 2023, according to BBC Sport. The club’s ownership arrangements may change: on 12 March 2026, BBC Sport reported that the ownership group was exploring additional investment, including a possible sale if a suitable party offered the right commitment to the club and town.
The ownership group said: “The Danson family remains fully engaged in the day-to-day running of the club, and that will not change unless and until we are satisfied that any new investment or ownership would be in the best interests of Wigan Athletic.” The statement was reported by BBC Sport on 12 March 2026.
What does the £1.182 billion estimate mean?
The Sunday Times Rich List 2025 put Danson’s estimated wealth at £1.182 billion. The figure should be attributed to that publication and year: public rich lists estimate wealth using available information, and the published number is not equivalent to audited personal accounts. No directly verifiable authoritative 2026 estimate is established here, so £1.182 billion should not be presented as a precise current valuation.

Personal net worth is not the same as cash on hand. Nor does a wealth-list estimate show how much Danson could or would put into Wigan Athletic; the estimate is not a club spending commitment.
What is behind Mike Danson’s wealth?
Danson’s business interests provide context for the estimate. GlobalData’s 2025 interim statement reported that he held 58.8% of its ordinary shares as of 30 June and 5 August 2025, and identified him as the company’s ultimate controlling party at those dates. The shareholding is a company-reported figure, not a standalone valuation of his entire personal wealth.

GlobalData’s 2025 annual report says Danson founded Datamonitor in 1990 and describes him as GlobalData’s chief executive. Datamonitor was sold to Informa in 2007 for £502 million, according to the report. That historical sale helps explain his business background; it does not establish how much he personally retained or what his assets are worth today.

Companies House records Wigan Athletic A.F.C. Limited’s full accounts for the year to 30 June 2025 as filed on 4 April 2026. Those are accounts for the club company, not a statement of Danson’s personal assets and liabilities. Club finances, investment in the club and an owner’s personal net worth are different measures and should not be substituted for one another.
