UPI is a payment system that lets you send money between bank accounts or pay merchants through a supported app. Your bank account holds the money, the app lets you set up and manage payments, a UPI ID or QR code can identify the recipient, and your UPI PIN authorizes a payment. You do not share your PIN to receive money.
What UPI is—and what it is not
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) describes UPI as an instant payment system built over IMPS for transfers between bank accounts. It supports person-to-person and merchant payments. UPI is not a bank account: funds are debited from or credited to a bank account you link in a supported app. NPCI’s UPI overview

What the UPI ID, app, PIN, and bank account each do
| Item | Its job |
|---|---|
| Bank account | Holds the money that is debited or credited. |
| UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address, or VPA) | Acts as a payment address so someone can direct money to you without asking for your account number and IFSC for that interaction. |
| UPI app | Provides the interface to link eligible accounts, choose how to pay, authorize transactions, and check their status. BHIM is one example, not the only UPI app. |
| UPI PIN | Private passcode used to authorize a payment. It is not your UPI ID and should not be shared. |
An account number plus IFSC is another possible payment route where the app and bank support it. The recipient details you can use depend on the features available in your app. NPCI’s UPI overview · BHIM

- Choose a supported UPI app. Register in the app and follow its account-linking steps.
- Verify the mobile number linked to your bank account. NPCI says the number verified in the app should match the number linked to the account so the app can find it.
- Select an eligible bank account. Follow the app’s instructions to complete setup and, when required, create a UPI PIN. Screens and supported accounts vary by app and bank. NPCI’s UPI ecosystem information
How to send money
- Select a payment route. Depending on the app, you may choose a UPI ID, scan a QR code, select a phone-number contact, or enter account details and IFSC.
- Check the payment details shown by the app. Confirm the recipient and amount before proceeding.
- Authorize only if the details are right. Enter your UPI PIN when the app asks you to approve the payment. Starting a payment is not the same as entering a recipient’s ID: the PIN authorizes the transaction.
- Check the result in the app. If the status is pending or unclear, keep the transaction reference and use the app or bank’s support route.
BHIM’s official information describes transfers by UPI ID or mobile number, QR scanning, account-and-IFSC transfers, linked accounts, and transaction history. The exact options depend on the app and bank. BHIM

How receiving money and collect requests work
To receive a payment, you can give the payer your UPI ID or show them your QR code. You do not need to reveal your PIN just because someone is paying you. A collect request works differently: another person asks you to approve a payment in your app. Review who is requesting money and the amount; approve only a request you recognize and intend to pay. A collect request is not a refund mechanism or a way to receive funds by entering your PIN. NPCI’s UPI overview · BHIM
UPI PIN safety: when to enter it and when not to
NPCI’s guidance is direct: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” It also says bank customer support will never ask you for it. Enter the PIN only in the payment app when you are authorizing a transaction whose recipient and amount you have checked. Never tell it to another person or enter it to accept an unexpected request or purported refund. NPCI’s UPI FAQ

Availability, limits, and optional features
NPCI’s FAQ says UPI payments are available 24/7, regardless of bank working hours. It lists an ordinary transaction limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, with higher ceilings for specified categories. That is NPCI’s stated cap, not a promise that your particular account, bank, or app will allow the full amount. Check the current limit shown by your bank or app; limits and features can vary and may change. NPCI’s UPI FAQ

What to do if a UPI payment is pending or wrong
If the status is pending or the account was debited
Check the transaction status in the app and retain its reference number. NPCI describes real-time reversals for declined transactions, but a beneficiary bank may take longer to process a pending payment. Follow the app or bank’s support instructions; there is no single recovery time or outcome that applies to every bank and transaction. NPCI’s UPI FAQ
If you sent money to the wrong person
Contact your bank or app support promptly and provide the transaction reference. A payment cannot be stopped after it has been initiated, and recovery is not guaranteed, so verify the displayed payee and amount before authorizing. NPCI’s UPI FAQ
