In T.T. Jagannathan’s account, the invention that helped save TTK Prestige’s pressure cooker business was the Gasket Release System (GRS), a backup steam-release path built into the cooker lid. He says it addressed a safety and sales crisis in North India linked to counterfeit replacement safety plugs. That account comes from an excerpt of his book, not an independent investigation; the book’s “billion-dollar” subtitle does not establish the company’s current valuation.
What problem was TTK Prestige facing?
Jagannathan recounts traveling through Uttar Pradesh after Prestige pressure cooker sales in North India had weakened. He says he saw warehouses filled with failed cookers and learned that customers were replacing worn parts with spurious safety plugs.
In his account, the genuine plug used an expensive tin-bismuth alloy, while cheaper counterfeits did not regulate pressure effectively. Cookers could outlast their external components, making replacement parts a recurring safety concern. Jagannathan described the business stakes bluntly: “I realised that if we didn’t stop this from happening we wouldn’t have a business to run.”
These details and the claimed link between the failures and counterfeit plugs are Jagannathan’s first-person account in a 2018 Scroll excerpt from his book, Disrupt and Conquer: How TTK Prestige Became A Billion-Dollar Company, written with Sandhya Mendonca and published by Penguin Random House India. The available sources do not independently verify the account.

How the Gasket Release System works
A pressure cooker’s weight valve releases steam during normal operation. The safety plug is a backup if that valve fails. Jagannathan says the GRS added another route: if the cooker became overloaded, a vent was blocked, or the valve or plug failed, a section of the gasket could push through a slot in the lid and direct excess steam downward, away from the person at the counter.
He recalled the development step this way: “I called the chief engineer at our factory and instructed him to keep a mock-up ready for me to work on.” Jagannathan also says he chose not to patent the system, so other manufacturers could use it and explosions involving other brands would not harm Prestige’s reputation. Those explanations, like the mechanism’s role in the company’s recovery, are his account rather than independently corroborated findings.

What is established about its effect on the company?
Jagannathan credits GRS with helping keep TTK Prestige from bankruptcy. The source does not independently establish that it caused the company’s recovery or verify his assertion that no Prestige cooker burst after the design was introduced. It is therefore most accurate to describe GRS as an innovation he says helped save the business, not as a proven sole cause of the company’s fortunes.
The “billion-dollar” wording belongs to the book’s subtitle. It should not be read as a current market valuation: the available sources do not establish TTK Prestige’s present value.

How the invention fits TTK Prestige’s history
TTK Prestige’s company-authored brand history and FAQ say the company was founded in 1955 by T.T. Krishnamachari and began manufacturing pressure cookers in 1959 in collaboration with the UK’s Prestige Group. The company history also describes safety changes, including a pressure release valve. This chronology places the cooker business decades before Jagannathan’s GRS episode; it does not independently confirm his account of that episode.
The brand history reports that gross turnover reached Rs 13.8 billion in 2013, alongside a 28% CAGR over the preceding 10 years. Those are historical company-reported figures, not current turnover or growth.

What the story does—and does not—say about cookers today
The account explains the intended GRS release path, but does not establish which currently sold Prestige models include it. A later company press release about the Svachh cooker describes its use on gas or induction; it does not say that the model uses GRS.
TTK Prestige’s official store lists cookers and gaskets, and the FAQ directs customers seeking replacement parts to a service center. For any cooker, use only parts confirmed as compatible with its exact model; the historical account is not a repair guide. The available product listings are examples of categories, not a safety ranking or endorsement.
