How Tony Stewart Built His Wealth: From Electrical Contracting to ASD Lighting

Tony Stewart’s documented path to wealth began in electrical contracting and grew into ASD Lighting. The £20 million estimate dates to 2009, while current club-company records do not establish his personal net worth.

Tony Stewart appears to have built his wealth through electrical contracting and ASD Lighting, the Rotherham lighting business that grew from that work. His later investment in Rotherham United—including backing the club’s return to a purpose-built home—was a separate use of his wealth, not the documented source of it. A £20 million figure often associated with Stewart was reported in 2009; it is not a verified estimate of his net worth today.

Stewart’s business began in electrical contracting

Stewart began as an apprentice electrician with the Coal Board, according to an EFL Magazine profile. He went on to form Tony Stewart Electricals, which eventually grew into ASD Lighting. BBC Sport also identified Stewart as the owner of Rotherham-based ASD Lighting PLC in its 2014 profile.

The EFL profile said ASD Lighting employed more than 200 people in Rotherham in 2019. The documented route to Stewart’s wealth is therefore business ownership and growth in lighting, rather than a fortune shown to have come from football.

How much was Tony Stewart worth?

A 2009 Rotherham Business News report said Management Today’s Top 100 Entrepreneurs list placed Stewart joint 98th and gave his wealth as £20 million. That is a historic estimate reported second-hand, not a current valuation.

The available material does not establish Stewart’s present net worth. It provides no personal balance sheet, current independent valuation of his interest in ASD Lighting, or full accounting of his liabilities and other assets. The £20 million figure should not be treated as a current measure.

His Rotherham United investment was a separate financial commitment

BBC Sport reported that Stewart took over Rotherham United in 2008. After the club could not agree a deal with the Millmoor landlords, he promised to fund a new ground. The BBC described the New York Stadium project as costing £17 million and reported that the club had played outside Rotherham before returning to the town.

An EFL Magazine profile in 2019 said Stewart could have lost £3 million of personal wealth through his investment in the club. That was reported exposure at the time, not a measure of his net worth or a current valuation. The £17 million stadium-project cost and £3 million personal exposure describe different things and should not be added together or confused with wealth estimates.

What current company records show—and what they do not

Companies House records show that Anthony Roy Stewart ceased to be a person with significant control of Rotherham United Football Club (RUFC) Limited on 10 March 2026. The same record lists ASD Lighting Holdings Limited as an active person with significant control, holding 75% or more of the club company’s shares and voting rights.

This is a record of control of RUFC Limited, not proof of Stewart’s personal ownership percentage in the club, his interest in ASD Lighting Holdings, or his net worth. The club’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 were filed on 13 April 2026, but those company filings do not by themselves establish Stewart’s personal financial position.

ASD Lighting is not AESSEAL

ASD Lighting is the business associated with Stewart’s wealth. AESSEAL is a different company: AESSEAL’s 2022 article identifies Chris Rea as its founder and describes the company as Rotherham United’s stadium naming-rights partner through the end of the 2026/27 season. The shared Rotherham and club connection does not make AESSEAL Stewart’s business.
